To pick up on the Star Trek motif.

They may need to stage an 'intervention'. Smile

Their biggest problem is that they don't know what MrM's team actually know.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 08/01/2018 19:38

Yep, although I’d imagine that they’re bricking it over what they know he does already know.

Oh Dear. Grin

I worry that 45 hasn't been given any sort of 'golden road of retreat'.

woman11017 · 08/01/2018 19:49

De lurking with more rumours of the great Oprah potentially running in 2020.

That lady's been pep talking me through since the 1980s, if she could pull it off now.............

cozietoesie · 08/01/2018 19:50

Is she wealthy?

cozietoesie · 08/01/2018 19:52

Sorry. I was being lazy there.

She is.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 08/01/2018 19:58

What could they say? What would allow him to graciously turn his back on the most power he’ll ever have?

“President trump, you have been so incredible, so worthy of devotion and admiration that the country would be so very grateful if you left this boring presidenting to someone else so you can have your own segment on fox so we can all revel in your glory”?

woman11017 · 08/01/2018 20:00

Self made billionaire. Financially impoverished childhood, brains, guts.
I remember her taking on southern (?) farmers when they tried to sue her for her comments about dangerous meat.
It was an attempted racialised take down; she handled it with utter courage.
She's got a cross cultural cross US constituency; we're just all a bit 'in our prime' Grin.
Hope it could translate for hip young things.

cozietoesie · 08/01/2018 20:00

I don't know, Pain. Sad

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 08/01/2018 20:02

I really admire Oprah but what political nous or experience does she have? Surely we should hope for someone who is a powerful orator, principled, good at connecting with people and equipped for the position of president?

cozietoesie · 08/01/2018 20:10

Ronald Regan?

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 08/01/2018 20:16

Surely we should hope for someone who is a powerful orator, principled, good at connecting with people and equipped for the position of president?

Yes, we definitely should, but I'm not sure we'll get it.

I've posted this elsewhere, but Trump has remodelled the office of president for the next few terms I think. While I would prefer to see a true, career politician as POTUS, with the qualities you mention, I don't think we'll get one.

Oprah is political. She has aligned herself with important issues over the years. She'd be a genuine improvement on Trump I know, so would a rotting meatball sandwich, but there we go, and I think she's a good person. That's starting to seem like a sackful of promise compared to what's squatting in the Oval Office at the moment.

woman11017 · 08/01/2018 20:21

She's a very canny politician Pain A big mover and shaker with Jesse Jackson, and then Obama.
She's been an active feminist, black rights activist, journalist and philanthropist. She's just very brainy. She was abused and lost a baby from incest as a teen; she knows a lot about a lot.
Lots of opposition and criticism from the usual suspects about her standing; showing more fear than they probably should.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 08/01/2018 20:28

I would take a rotting meatball sandwich as a substitute Grin

It just seems premature to think of 2020 when 2018 is so critical and will be heavily manipulated to give the GOP as many advantages as possible . And i suppose I think it’s a shame we have to embrace the non qualified element before it’s absolutely necessary

AcrossthePond55 · 08/01/2018 20:32

I think Oprah is the epitome of the 'Powerful Woman' we need to hear and to emulate in our own way and in our own lives. But as President of the US? I'm not so sure. I don't know why, but I'm just not so sure. Maybe the thought of another uber-wealthy 'media personality' (albeit one with a bit of gravitas and a good deal of human kindness) as president is just too 'raw'. I'm also not sure if she's palatable enough to a large enough segment of the populace to get elected.

I'm also glad Steyer has chosen not to run. We absolutely need someone like him to pour money into getting Democrats elected. Yes, it's taking a page out of the GOP's book, but sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.

I hear what you're saying cozie. They aren't given Scrotus an 'out'. This is going to back him into a corner rather than giving him a way to resign without losing face. But perhaps they realize that he wouldn't take an out if it was offered. With the mounting evidence of Trump/Russia piling up, he's already passed up resigning without admission of guilt 'for the good of the Country' a la Nixon. He's just this past weekend 'passed' on resigning via the 25th Amendment due to a mental health/dementia issue by insisting he's a 'stable genius'. I don't think there are any more 'outs' they can give him.

GingerIvy · 08/01/2018 20:33

If Oprah Winfrey wants to run for POTUS, I would recommend she earn her stripes and get some political experience first - run for Senate or the House and work up to POTUS. She'll earn more respect, she'll have a better idea of how government works from the inside, and she'll make valuable contacts politically. I wouldn't vote for her unless she did that. Sorry. The last thing the US needs right now is another "breath of fresh air."

She'd also need to step away from her businesses and release her taxes. If she's not willing to do that, then she's not the person for the job.

Personally, I think we have a number of decent potential candidates already. Ted Lieu, Sally Yates, Joe Kennedy III, for example.

cozietoesie · 08/01/2018 20:35

You missed Mr O's choice, Ginger. (Eric baby.) Wink

cozietoesie · 08/01/2018 20:39
