You should not invite a vegetarian for Christmas if you have no intention of catering for them?

You should not invite a vegetarian for Christmas dinner if you have no intention of catering for them?

I am a vegetarian. I went to my MIL's for Christmas dinner and all I could eat was Brussels sprouts, peas, carrots and potatoes. Without gravy!

The stuffing, gravy etc.. all had animal products.

There were 14 of us in total and 3 of us were very disappointed vegetarians.

I usually host and make sure everyone is catered for. I felt quite irritated, as I had offered to bring any part of the meal and if she had told me she was not catering for the vegetarians, I would have done it.

My MIL is very traditional and supports fox hunting. I suspect that she does not agree with being vegetarian and this was her passive aggressive way of showing that.

In every other way she is lovely and a great MIL. She wants us to come again next year. How do I politely make sure this does not happen again?

This thread has gone a bit wonky Grin

ragged · 29/12/2017 22:14

So odd that there were
no nibbles
no starter
no butter
no vegetarian-compatible beverages
for pudding only Xmas pudding -- not even cream or ice cream to go with that.
It's not the greatest catering, to be like that, fair enough.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 29/12/2017 22:18

I find that sometimes my dm generation just don't know what to give vegetarians

Eh? Vegetarianism isn't a new-fangled invention.

Hallamoo · 29/12/2017 22:20

Positivelyperf - you seem quite cross about my dietary choices and intolerances. I've said on this thread, at least twice, that I don't use the term 'veggan' as I've never heard it until today.

I promise you, from personal experience that it is much easier to tell restaurants that I am vegan, rather than a vegetarian with a dairy intolerance. The amount of times I have had to explain to waiting staff that butter, cheese and sour cream are dairy products!

Why do you care what people call themselves? We're all doing our bit.

Oh and I could absolutely commit to being vegan, but at this time I choose to eat the odd free range egg from a relative's chickens, and maybe some mayo when I go out.

MikeUniformMike · 29/12/2017 22:28

Penny's dropped. Vegan who will eat egg is a v-egg-an.

TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag · 29/12/2017 22:31

I know someone who is an ovo-vegetarian, which I think is the same thing as veggan. I think some vegans don’t like the term veggan though. I’m sure I saw some post about it back in the days when I was actually on Facebook (social media-phobic)!

"I find that sometimes my dm generation just don't know what to give vegetarians"

What age is your mother's generation?

PositivelyPERF · 29/12/2017 22:39

halloma I don't have issues with your diet at all. I have issues with people using incorrect definitions which cause misunderstanding amongst meat eaters. You're welcome to call yourself vegan, but please have the curtesy not to order a meal that contains none vegan ingredients. If you use the term vegan and eat none vegan foods then vegans have to put up with the usual "my friends a vegan and eats insert none vegan ingredient " or being served with a meal that contains none vegan ingrediants. I DO have issue with the word VEGGAN as it is simply an ovo vegetarian. It causes confusion as it sounds EXACTLY the same as vegan.

earlofhell · 29/12/2017 22:41

can you not have some wafer thin ham Grin

PositivelyPERF · 29/12/2017 22:41

Mike 😆 Confusing as fuck, isn't it?

Hallamoo · 29/12/2017 22:44

Most restaurant staff don't know what a pescatarian is, let alone an ovo-vegetarian!

I'll carry on calling myself a vegan when out (and carry on eating vegan meals when out). If I do have a non-vegan ingredient, such as mayo - I always clarify that mayo isn't vegan, and then go on to explain my diet.

PositivelyPERF · 29/12/2017 22:46

earl are you my sil, who couldn't understand why I wouldn't have some of her lemon meringue pie, as it only has a wee bit of egg in it. 😕🙄😆

Mumof56 · 29/12/2017 23:03

Won't eat eggs but Yet you've no issue with holding dogs hostage

PositivelyPERF · 29/12/2017 23:34

What are you on about, mum56?

Mumof56 · 29/12/2017 23:37

You have a dog hostage, yes?

PositivelyPERF · 29/12/2017 23:43

Are you in something 56, because I have no clue to what you're rambling about?

SuburbanRhonda · 29/12/2017 23:43

Proof, if any were needed, that mum is a massive wind-up merchant 🙄

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 29/12/2017 23:44

I think Mumof56 might be running that tedious argument that it is hypocritical of vegetarians to have carnivorous or omnivorous pets.

PositivelyPERF · 29/12/2017 23:49

You got it wrong, 56, the cat is actually the culprit.

You should not invite a vegetarian for Christmas if you have no intention of catering for them?
Mumof56 · 29/12/2017 23:51

You have a dog. You "own" an animal. You are depriving it of the opportunity to engage in their natural behavior. They are restricted to your home, where they must obey commands and can only eat, drink, and even urinate when you allow them to.

RadioGaGoo · 29/12/2017 23:55

Oh yawn. It's Mumof56.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 29/12/2017 23:58

Well I'm sure The Canine Defence League, the SSPCA, the RSPCA, Blue Cross and The Dog Trust would be delighted if all dog owners turfed their dogs out to live in a natural state.

What a ridiculous post.

PositivelyPERF · 29/12/2017 23:58

Are you stalking me 56? Why you little rascal. You've found me out. I really should release that dog I rescued from being beaten and starved and let it out into the wild, with all the other beasties. Of course with the medical problems it has due to its previous mistreatment it won't last long, but at least it won't be held hostage. As for it peeing on command Hahahaha, try telling my floor that! 😆

I've never been stalked before. It's really not as exciting as I thought it would be. disappointed

53rdWay · 29/12/2017 23:58

My Christmas dinner was all veggie this year. Was ace. That said if we’d had some of my vegetable-hating relatives as guests I’d have worked some meat into it somehow, because who’d want guests to go hungry at Christmas dinner? Your MIL is weird.

Mumof56 · 30/12/2017 00:00

Of course with the medical problems it has due to its previous mistreatment it won't last long

Is he pumped full of drugs too? Hmm
