To ask if you’re not having turkey for Christmas lunch, what will you be having?

We will be having Greek style lamb casserole this year. We have different food each year at Christmas and haven’t gone turkey for years. Tbh none of the family like it and find it fairly tasteless and dry. I think Christmas should be what you enjoy. Before the 1960s few people are turkey anyway at Xmas and if it wasnt for MIL insisting on turkey in previous years we’d never have it. As it is, I put my foot down a few years back and now we just do whatever takes our fancy each year. AIBU to think people just have turkey because everyone else does and they feel they “have to”?

We never have turkey, no one here wants it as a first choice. Usually we have venison.

purplecorkheart · 24/12/2017 06:27

Fillet of beef wrapped in a shallot and horseradish mixture wrapped in parma ham.

PanicHitsEarlyForMe · 24/12/2017 06:29

Two joints, a choice of roast beef or roast pork.

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 24/12/2017 06:29

Goose - we usually have goose...

ILoveMillhousesDad · 24/12/2017 06:30

Each to their own, but if you have only ever had dry and tasteless turkey, you've been cooking it wrong.

Given the Nigella treatment, turkey is absolutely delicious.

We will be having turkey a la nigella and gammon a la Nigel Slater.

Enjoy your casserole and you are right in that you should eat what you want, but luckily, we all love traditional crimbo day fayre.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 24/12/2017 06:30

Goose, roast beef and ham

ethelfleda · 24/12/2017 06:31

A chicken. There is only two of us and I find roasting a whole bird much juicier. Especially using a Jamie recipe Xmas Smile

SpeckledyHen · 24/12/2017 06:31

M & S nut roast . I've never eaten turkey . As a kid we always had a capon whatever that was ! And I haven't eaten meat now for 42 years .

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/12/2017 06:33

We were going to have a Filipino pork dish, but I'm not well so it'll be gammon which I can chuck in the slowy and whatever sides I can muster up.
Or if I'm feeling really bad then whatever falls out of the fridge, just me and 16yr old Dd here.

Roast leg of lamb, best time of year for lamb

Garlic and rosemary cut into leg and slow roasted

Served with Yorkshire’s, pigs in blankets vegetables and roasted potatoes and parsnios

NovemberWitch · 24/12/2017 06:34

Gammon is for Boxing Day, New Year is salmon. As a vegetarian, I cook a lot of interesting side dishes that change from year to year.

HotelEuphoria · 24/12/2017 06:35

Always do two pieces of meat. Agree turkey doesn't have to be dry or tasteless, I admit though I am not a massive fan of the taste. We always had pork as a kid and not turkey, and I have replaced turkey with chicken before which I prefer.

Whatever meat you pick, you can't beat the pigs in blankets, stuffing, chestnuts and bacon with sprouts, and cranberry sauce whilst not forgetting the roasties. The meat is just a side to me.

WinterRose92 · 24/12/2017 06:35

Beef and gammon!

Unforunateseriesofevents · 24/12/2017 06:36

Fillet steak this year. Last year I did it with the horseradish/shallots/Parma ham treatment that @purplecorkheart is doing this year and it was lovely. This year we’re doing it as is because I just cba to do any prep at all Xmas Grin

Lillylollylandy · 24/12/2017 06:36

Goose for us. We nearly had venison though.

FlouncyDoves · 24/12/2017 06:36

A chinese meal, possibly including duck pancakes if I’m lucky.

ivykaty44 · 24/12/2017 06:37

It’s a lit of effort to my mind to get flavour into turkey, whereas other roast meats already have flavour

uokhunni · 24/12/2017 06:38

Beef Wellington (Sainsbury's one) awesome :)

juliesaway · 24/12/2017 06:38

I think much can depend on your oven with turkey and it’s a fine line between moist and dry. Even so, I find it pretty tasteless which is why it needs all the condiments, sauces etc

Great to so many different meals being prepared other than turkey! There are more folk out there than I thought!

Steak pie. DH is a butcher and DS works in a kitchen so both sick of the sight of turkey.

MaximaDeWit · 24/12/2017 06:42

Mmm goose. We're having a huge beef rib thing with beef trimmings and some of the Christmas extras too.

Definitely goose next year tho. And I agree, if cooked well turkey I definitely not dry and tasteless!

Tangarine · 24/12/2017 06:43

Usually we have beef, but this year we are having lamb for a change. Rack of lamb tomorrow and a slow cooked leg on Boxing Day.

Angelicinnocent · 24/12/2017 06:45

Whatever I get given since we are not hosting this year Xmas Smile

juliesaway · 24/12/2017 06:45

We had home made steak pie 3 year ago, with peas and veg! Sounds like a bizarre thing for Christmas Day but it was gorgeous!
