To ask if you’re not having turkey for Christmas lunch, what will you be having?

We will be having Greek style lamb casserole this year. We have different food each year at Christmas and haven’t gone turkey for years. Tbh none of the family like it and find it fairly tasteless and dry. I think Christmas should be what you enjoy. Before the 1960s few people are turkey anyway at Xmas and if it wasnt for MIL insisting on turkey in previous years we’d never have it. As it is, I put my foot down a few years back and now we just do whatever takes our fancy each year. AIBU to think people just have turkey because everyone else does and they feel they “have to”?

Whatever veggie fancy ready-made dish I feel like from the fridge or freezer plus sage and onion stuffing, carrots, sprouts, peas, parsnips, roast potatoes, onion gravy and bread sauce. Sides MUCH more important! 😂

Followed by Christmas pudding and brandy butter - Mum's recipe which means keeping it in the fridge to stop it going liquid from the huge amount of brandy in it.

Pescaratarian so smoked salmon starters at Christmas and a side of salmon for Hogmanay and Ne'erday.

PS
Tonight its Beef Wellington (made by my wonderful DH)
and boxing day is Game Stew (all New Forest game)

I love that my butcher gives out the postcodes of the farms as he is proud of the supply chain

NumberPerson · 24/12/2017 15:48

We are having a raclette lunch, with lots of small pieces of different meat and veg to cook at the table
DC (age 6) love being able to cook their own food (they are very aware of which bits they can touch and which bits get hot)
Will also make a bit of pancake batter
And dessert is a chocolate fountain

We all love it, and it means very little time in the kitchen for meGrin

For Christmas dinner my mum & dad are having lamb shanks. I'm having a quorn gammon thing. With frozen roast potatoes, roast onion, leas, carrots & sage & onion stuffing balls.

topcat2014 · 24/12/2017 15:49

Lasagne, Salad, Garlic Bread.

(with a bit of home-made Christmas pudding, and bought cake, for after)

Graphista · 24/12/2017 15:56

Just me n dd. Dd having chicken breast and pigs in blankets, I'm having nut cutlet (veggie, not had turkey in over 30 years).

Accompaniments, roast and mash potatoes, roast parsnips, glazed carrots, yorkies, stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy.

In the past I've had only the accompaniments or pastry parcel type things, Quorn roast etc but I like it to be easy and laid back now.

Farfromtheusual · 24/12/2017 15:58

Chicken tikka masala 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

berwickswan · 24/12/2017 16:00

Breakfast will be poached haddock and poached duck eggs on a bed of spinach.
Fuelled up I'm off to meet friends to play our sport. Back, dunno, 3.00ish, may be later if the pubs open.
Zzzzzz in front of the tele ,possibly probably.
Dinner about 7.0 - lots of squid, octopus, prawns etc and stuff
Cheeses and grapes later..

Perfick! Grin

RoseWhiteTips · 24/12/2017 16:01

Nut roast!

SabineUndine · 24/12/2017 16:03

Will probably have pizza for lunch as going out in the evening.

Molly499 · 24/12/2017 16:21

Suckling pig for us, smothered in Jamies' Christmas rub which makes the house smell gorgeously Christmassy, followed by tiramisui. I have a one man Xmas pud for myself to eat at some point. Did a rib of beef last night, lobster Thermidor the night before and Chinese tonight so back to lighter food next week!

RavingRoo · 24/12/2017 16:25

Vegan roast, roast veg, baked whole salmon, and a christmas pud. All home made.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 24/12/2017 16:29

I made Beef Wellington (a la Gordon Ramsay) as a change years ago, and now I have to do it every year!! It's a bit of a faff, but a beef fillet costs the same as overpriced Christmas turkey, and everyone loves it. It's also great because it's all ready to go now and will just need 20 minutes in the oven tomorrow!
Have made pate for starters, with home made chutney. Then lobster, grilled tiger prawns with garlic and chilli and scallops in champagne and cream.
Then the beef welly.
For pudding I've premade melting chocolate fondants, lime layered cheesecake, chocolate trifle and meringues.
Christmas cake and coffee later
Much later (at board game time), chessboard
I love Christmas and Christmas food! Our dinner lasts about 8hours, with breaks!

Aragog · 24/12/2017 16:30

We rarely have turkey. I don't eat meat anyway so either have fish or just all the trimmings.

DH and DD normally take it in turns to choose the meat so it varies. In the past it has been fillet steak, roast duck, chicken, chateaubriand...

This year we are going to an Indian restaurant with friends for their Festive buffet.

SilverySurfer · 24/12/2017 16:32

ihatetosay
all the animals murdered - cheese pizza here

Well I suppose we could eat them all while they are still alive but if I was due to be eaten I would prefer to be dead first Hmm

Pizza sounds crummy for Christmas Lunch.

PurpleDaisies · 24/12/2017 16:42

Another nut roast here. I’m with the in laws who seemed to have no idea what they could possibly provide for a veggie (it’s my first Christmas since no meat) so I’ve just bought one from m and s. Looks nice though. All the usual trimmings plus pickled onions.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 24/12/2017 16:49

Beef Wellington for Xmas lunch. We haven't had turkey for years. Usually do a goose but we've gone off piste this year. It will be delicious.

isseywithcats · 24/12/2017 16:53

Weedsnseeds1 · 24/12/2017 16:57

If I knew where berwickswan lived I'd be straight round for the seafood extravaganza!

SparkleFizz · 24/12/2017 17:04

Lamb Xmas Smile

Graphista · 24/12/2017 17:05

I'm veggie but I'm under no illusions either, to the poster having the cheese pizza are you aware that the dairy industry still equals animal slaughter and cruelty? I try and keep my dairy consumption to a minimum and have been considering veganism but please, don't be a hypocrit.

Plus lots of meat eaters now make an effort too having free range reared meat. Things are improving.

Have to say I think veal a step too far though.

Shmithecat · 24/12/2017 17:07

Boned rib of beef stuffed with porcini mushrooms and truffles from M&S. I literally cannot wait 😋

Ta1kinPeace · 24/12/2017 17:09

UK Veal is fine .....
Veal is a waste product of the dairy industry and non crated English veal adds value for farmers
its a bit bland but makes a nice foil for sauces.

Crated Italian or Dutch veal is indeed best avoided.
