To ask if you’re not having turkey for Christmas lunch, what will you be having?

We will be having Greek style lamb casserole this year. We have different food each year at Christmas and haven’t gone turkey for years. Tbh none of the family like it and find it fairly tasteless and dry. I think Christmas should be what you enjoy. Before the 1960s few people are turkey anyway at Xmas and if it wasnt for MIL insisting on turkey in previous years we’d never have it. As it is, I put my foot down a few years back and now we just do whatever takes our fancy each year. AIBU to think people just have turkey because everyone else does and they feel they “have to”?

Chicken and pork with all the usual trimmings.

Mummadeeze · 24/12/2017 07:49

Always have roast lamb in our house. Much more tasty. Also have Yorkshire puddings because we like them.

Rebeccaslicker · 24/12/2017 07:50

I'm veggie so it varies! Nut roast is a nice option. This year we are going out; the veggie option was some sort of cheese, spinach and veg roulade. Most of the family have gone for turkey but there is a rogue salmon eater and a cheeky gammon consumer!

FurryDogMother · 24/12/2017 07:50

Duck. In fact we'll be having duck for dinner for the foreseeable future, because Tesco subbed my Christmas goose with 3 frozen ducks (to go with the duck crown and duck breasts already in the freezer). We also have a chicken, and no room to freeze it. Ducking hell.

Tumbleweed101 · 24/12/2017 07:51

Christmas Day buffet so that nobody has to cook or clear up too much :).

PumpkinPie2016 · 24/12/2017 07:52

We are having beef and pork. Both from my usual butcher who is excellent so it should be lovely!

Chienrouge · 24/12/2017 07:52

Beef wellington. We were going to have venison but found a really lovely looking fillet of beef at the butchers. L I don’t like turkey, and not because I’ve only ever had it cooked wrong. I just don’t like it. There are much nicer meats around (in my opinion obv).

This is our first ever Christmas at home; me, husband and Theo children. We went through the M&S book and chose the monkfish tail wrapped in bacon. Will be having pigs in blankets, roast potatoes and as yet undecided veggies (am thinking peas&leeks , roasted tomatoes and courgettes) and a chocolate and toffee pudding. All very laid back but something we don't usually have.

boredofmyoldname · 24/12/2017 07:53

We've decided just to make a giant sausage stuffing meatloaf and have that wrapped in bacon instead :o

So it'll be meatloaf, pigs in blankets, carrots, brocolli, maple glazed parsnips, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings here :o

JackietheBackie · 24/12/2017 07:53

Two children - no idea who Theo is.....

MelanieCheeks · 24/12/2017 08:00

Beef wellington here, from Iceland!

I'm doing all the veggies-sprouts with chestnuts and button mushrooms, roast parsnips and glazed carrots. Salted caramel pud with ice cream.

Mychristmasdinner · 24/12/2017 08:19

Living the fact that anyone who says they find turkey dry and tasteless is being told they're either not doing it properly or it's a poor quality bird. IMO, any meat that requires up to two days in a bucket of stuff to make it edible, is not worth it.
We are having homemade pork wellington. It will take me about an hour to prepare today , store in fridge until tomorrow. Bung it in the oven CPR about an hour - to an hour and a half. Slice and serve. Tasty and no leftovers or waste. Will have it with the usual roast dinner accompaniments as well as my homemade cranberry sauce which goes very well with it.

StuffAndNonsenseYes · 24/12/2017 08:24

Frozen nut roast from Lidl this year Xmas Grin

Normally, I'd make something from scratch because cooking is my happy place, but with a very needy 6mo, it would be impossible this year. Sad

Served with roast potatoes and parsnips, sprouts and carrots, stuffing and gravy. Yum.

GingerPCatt · 24/12/2017 08:35

Growing up we always had Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve so on Christmas Day my Grandma would make chili in the crockpot. She always said she wanted to relax and enjoy Christmas Day too Grin. This year it’s just DH DS and I so it’s going to be snow crab for the adults and fishfingers (his favorite) for DS. Yummy!!

CrabappleCake · 24/12/2017 08:36

Feeding twelve so turkey and a ham are a good way of doing it!

I like turkey, but when it’s not cooked well it can be dry.

If it was just me and dh we’d probably have steak or lamb...actually we’d be on holiday somewhere far away!,

FlakeBook · 24/12/2017 08:42

Nut roast

grosseconnasse · 24/12/2017 08:54

A huge homemade lasagne, with garlic pizza bread and salad. Then pandoro bread and butter pud.

EleanorXx · 24/12/2017 09:01

We're having homemade turkey burger and homemade chips. Nobody in my family really likes roast dinners so there is no reason to have them

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 24/12/2017 09:08

Well I had notions of doing a more fancy vegetarian dish but the dc begged for Quorn wellington so that's what we're having! I have a Pinterest recipe for a mushroom and onion gravy which sounds lovely so I have the ingredients in for that. Oh and some gravy granules in case it goes wrong Wink.

thethoughtfox · 24/12/2017 09:08

I wanted a goose but my family vetoed it

PorklessPie · 24/12/2017 09:11

Vegan household here, we are just having buffet food. We have no friends or family so we don't have to cater for anyone, or visit people which suits us WinkGrin

WeAreEternal · 24/12/2017 09:13

No bird for DS and I because we are vegan —although don’t feel the need for patronising ridiculous comments— We will be having a homemade nut and lentil loaf.

DH is having duck,
He rarely eats meat other than the odd fillet steak or duck and Christmas.

We also do three different kinds of stuffing, and lots of veg sides because the side dishes are by far my favourite part of Christmas dinner.

HolgerDanske · 24/12/2017 09:13

You don’t need to brine turkey in order for it to be moist and lovely (in fact I hate it prepared that way) but yes, if it’s dry or tasteless it is an inferior bird and/or has not been cooked right.

We don’t always have turkey, although we are having one this year. We often do pork roast, as is traditional in Denmark where I’m from, and we have also had goose a few times. Goose is my favourite, similar to turkey but much more flavourful. Next year I might do duck.

SilverySurfer · 24/12/2017 11:46

Last year I decided to buy a capon at vast expense, hoping to recapture the taste of my childhood Christmas Lunch but I was disappointed so back to free range chicken this year.

Cold roast chicken, prawns, potato salad, mangos, cherries and watermelon on the beach

Pavlova with strawberries when we get back from the beach

Cheese and wine with friends in the evening

BBQ and triffle on Boxing Day
