To ask if you’re not having turkey for Christmas lunch, what will you be having?

We will be having Greek style lamb casserole this year. We have different food each year at Christmas and haven’t gone turkey for years. Tbh none of the family like it and find it fairly tasteless and dry. I think Christmas should be what you enjoy. Before the 1960s few people are turkey anyway at Xmas and if it wasnt for MIL insisting on turkey in previous years we’d never have it. As it is, I put my foot down a few years back and now we just do whatever takes our fancy each year. AIBU to think people just have turkey because everyone else does and they feel they “have to”?

gonnabreakmyrustycage I have just made the Bosh vegan Christmas gravy, and it is lush. They also have a great vegan Christmas dinner on their Facebook page. I am doing most of it except that I am doing the shallot and chestnut tarte tatin instead of the mushroom wellington.

DamsonGin · 24/12/2017 12:57

LoniceraJaponica how do you do the chestnut tarte tatin? We have some in the cupboard, and puff pastry in the freezer.

A big Yorkshire pudding with stuffing and approximately 53 types of vegetable inside it, covered in gravy. A few roast potatoes on the side with mince sauce.

For a few years I had some kind of fake turkey meat, but it's not necessary. All the trimmings make a fantastic meal.

JennyHolzersGhost · 24/12/2017 13:07

Duck with sour cherry sauce. Plus red cabbage, sprouts with pancetta, roast potatoes and honey roast parsnips.
We’re another household that never does turkey. My best to date was slow cooked pulled pork, that was delicious.

Vegan house here too (including the family visiting) we are having a big ass mushroom Wellington and nut roast but due to various tastes there are too many sides! Having braised red cabbage, stuffing X 2, carrots, Savoy cabbage, brocolli, sprouts with chestnuts, roasted parsnips and potatoes, cauliflower 'cheese', roasted shallots, mash. And of course, lots and lots of gravy 🎅

we are having salmon , stir fry veg in coconut and lemongrass sauce & dauphinois potatoes.....

GetOutOfMYGarden · 24/12/2017 14:08

Duck and lamb. My mum's the only person who manages to do turkey right and she's on holiday!

aintnothinbutagstring · 24/12/2017 14:16

Spiced slow cooked brisket with some traditional sides (brussels, parsnips, roasties) and non traditional like potato salad (or a sour cream and chive mash depending on how we feel), corn on the cob and homemade corn bread. I do like turkey but enjoy it for leftovers more than the main meal. I think as long as xmas dinner is something you really relish and enjoy, its all good.

Toad in the hole!

chickenowner · 24/12/2017 14:19

There will be a huge roast beef, gammon and a stuffed cabbage vegetarian dish.

stevie69 · 24/12/2017 14:21

I'm having:

Bubble & Squeak to start
Salmon for main course
Cheeseboard for pudding

Merry Christmas and a truly peaceful new year to one and all Smile

Don’t slate all turkeys if you’ve never had a good one!

Free range, fresh, cooked nigellastyle (overnight brining essential) they taste great!

Chienrouge · 24/12/2017 14:26

Don’t slate all turkeys if you’ve never had a good one!

I’ve had objectively ‘good’ turkey. I still don’t like it! In the same way other people don’t like lamb/pork or whatever. I just don’t like turkey. There are much nicer meats!

tobee · 24/12/2017 14:26

Yeah I don't really like the taste of turkey. Not a question of moistness. So I do a version of the two fat ladies duck on the Yangtze which is a whole roast duck with Chinese 5 spice, orange and gin. I serve it with all the usual trimmings.

I've done goose before which I like but it can be a bit of a task too many, constantly having to drain of boiling goose fat. Cold goose sandwiches are fun though!

Ta1kinPeace · 24/12/2017 14:34

Goose.
because we love it and the leftovers go well in the freezer to be turned into chilli right through the spring.

foodfrax · 24/12/2017 15:12

Chicken ... we think it’s nicer than turkey.

GrimDamnFanjo · 24/12/2017 15:13

Three bird roast. Ham on Boxing Day.

ScreamingValentaMySantaExpress · 24/12/2017 15:16

Goose - it's what we always have. I find turkey a bit bland and tasteless and rarely have it at any time of the year. Goose is rich and flavoursome, and doesn't need basting Xmas Smile although you do have to empty the fat out a couple of times while roasting.

SenecaFalls · 24/12/2017 15:22

We always have ham for Christmas dinner. We're in the US. Turkey is for Thanksgiving.

Batmanwearspants · 24/12/2017 15:23

Goose as it’s the real tradition Christmas meat.

Clandestino · 24/12/2017 15:24

Fillet steak with fried sweet potato slices and sauce Diane.

newsparklythings · 24/12/2017 15:24

Duck and we eat tonight, it's I the p oven now.. With small children much easier, we can then nibble our way through Christmas day with other bits added in, and avoid splitting time between kitchen and play :)

SheSparkles · 24/12/2017 15:25

Ham and Beef Wellington here

pastapestoparmesan · 24/12/2017 15:26

Turkey is on the menu but I don’t like it so will eat all the other stuff. Hosts know I don’t like turkey and won’t be offended when I don’t eat it.

ihatetosay · 24/12/2017 15:30

all the animals murdered - cheese pizza here
