To ask if you’re not having turkey for Christmas lunch, what will you be having?

We will be having Greek style lamb casserole this year. We have different food each year at Christmas and haven’t gone turkey for years. Tbh none of the family like it and find it fairly tasteless and dry. I think Christmas should be what you enjoy. Before the 1960s few people are turkey anyway at Xmas and if it wasnt for MIL insisting on turkey in previous years we’d never have it. As it is, I put my foot down a few years back and now we just do whatever takes our fancy each year. AIBU to think people just have turkey because everyone else does and they feel they “have to”?

thishedgehog · 24/12/2017 11:54

Louiselouie0890 · 24/12/2017 11:54

Chicken beef ham

MrsPestilence · 24/12/2017 12:02

Cheastnut loaf, duck, dauphinois potatoes, red cabbage and home grown sprouts (off to sley them in a few mins) plus roasted peppers all drowned in red onion and lentil gravy.

TantrumsNSprouts · 24/12/2017 12:05

Only got a stuffed, rolled turkey breast this year as can’t be arsed with a huge bird. Doing a chicken and a ham too, though.

LoniceraJaponica · 24/12/2017 12:06

This year we are having shallot and chestnut tarte tatin with all the usual accompaniments. I am also doing pigs in blankets for non-vegetarian OH and me.

ThisNameIsJustForChristmas · 24/12/2017 12:07

We are having a duck! Last year we had ham in Coke. We never have turkey as none of us really like it.

HemanOrSheRa · 24/12/2017 12:09

Bone in Sirloin of beef at DS's request. Plus chicken and gammon if anyone wants it.

Last year DS wanted turkey so I bought a big goosenargh chicken and told him it was turkey Xmas Wink. I find leftover turkey goes dry no matter how much butter/bacon/basting.

We had capon a couple of years ago, I enjoyed it but DP said it was too 'gamey'.

IHaveACuntingPlan · 24/12/2017 12:24

Dh bought some fancy beef steak stuff from Iceland (Chateaubriand?) for him and the dc. I bought a mushroom wellington from Tesco. We're having that with mash, roast carrots & potatoes, steamed veg and Yorkshire puddings.

belleandsnowwhite · 24/12/2017 12:26

Beef here.

VivaLeBeaver · 24/12/2017 12:28

Duck

ScaryDuck · 24/12/2017 12:29

My first year as a veggie - DP has promise me a feast! I think it'll be weird, I've eaten turkey every christmas day for as long as I can remember...

Fakingit36 · 24/12/2017 12:30

(USA) - beef. Turkey is for Thanksgiving here which is only a month before so most people move onto ham or beef.

cloudyweewee · 24/12/2017 12:32

Quorn roast.

ChristmasAtSquiffanys · 24/12/2017 12:32

Deep voice...
We're not having just any chicken, we're having a Marks and Spencer Oakham chicken

KhalliWali · 24/12/2017 12:36

Nut roast, roast potatoes, glazed carrots, sweetcorn, Yorkshire puddings & gravy (vegan household).

juliesaway · 24/12/2017 12:36

Great to see the variety of different meals people are looking forward to ! I hope you all enjoy your Christmas Day food whatever you eat x

Not really a turkey fan here either. I cook it about 1 year in five to appease certain guests. Then the other years it varies.
This year I have a shoulder of wild boar. Last year was suckling pig.
Have also done beef, goose, duck and water buffalo.
Have never done lamb for some reason, maybe next year as I love roast lamb..
There is a ginger beer ham for boxing Day.

gonnabreakmyrustycage · 24/12/2017 12:41

Another vegan household here. Nutroast it is! More excited about all the veg to be honest!

SuddenBeetE · 24/12/2017 12:47

Lamb curry here

StrawBasket · 24/12/2017 12:47

Seafood platter here.

Party nibbles tonight and tomorrow night, we are spending as little time cooking as humanly possible, it's Christmas, none of us wants to be in the kitchen.

Babyg1995 · 24/12/2017 12:51

Steak pie apart from ds2 who will be having turkey had to buy a huge one today no small ones so will be Turkey sandwiches for a week Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/12/2017 12:51

We're having goose, but with the traditional sides for Christmas dinner - stuffing, bread sauce, gravy, plus apple sauce because it is a rich meat, with roast potatoes and parsnips, red cabbage, and sprouts with chestnuts.

MiddlingMum · 24/12/2017 12:54

Vegan bake with lots of veggies.

DamsonGin · 24/12/2017 12:55

Bookmarking this for next year, I love the idea of lamb casserole. We're having beef, fairly plain so we can have a meal everyone will eat.
