To think this family are twat travellers

Crowded airport.

All restaurants rammed.

I see there's one brasserie style place, also busy, 5 seats at the bar and 2 tables left.

I queue to get food and plan on sitting at the bar. Just as I'm collecting my change two girls appear, running to the bar seats and laughing. Then their mum and dad appear and say "well done Sophie!"

AIBU to think if you're a family you leave the bar seats to solo travellers? The whole point is sitting at the bar is less conspicuous. And also if you take up a table as a solo traveller you often get asked if you mind sharing when a group/family arrives, understandably.

Just think its quite selfish!

You CANNOT aver a supposed equivalence between in-flight seat reclining and people sitting on bar stools in family groups. Not in the same postcode.

guessing 4 solos didnt turn up while you / family were there?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 22/12/2017 23:37

I've been glared at by couples and families for sitting at tables rather than bar stools before. I don't mind sitting at the bar if I am not working on my laptop and/or the stools are comfy for short people, but of then I often am/they aren't. The family in this scenario sound like utter cunts for their 'well done Sophie' attitude.

I’d be too worried folk would think I’m all desperate and hoping someone will chat me up

Really? Never crossed my mind .... Last time I was sleazed on the place was empty and I had a huge table to myself.

I think I agree with Francis.

This doesn't apply to places which are packed-out busy, but if you're in a bar or pub which is reasonably empty, my DH firmly believes
sitting at the bar = I want strangers to talk to me (for romance/sex)
sitting away from the bar = leave me alone/I'm waiting for someone

I don't think the above rule applies in airports, where there aren't 'regulars' and people are unlikely to be there for an entire night.

mathanxiety · 23/12/2017 04:54

I have heard of the solo at the bar stools thing and I agree with you OP, it was selfish of the family to plonk themselves there in a row, meaning you now have to sit on the end of their row, or look selfish yourself by being a single at a table of four (which yes, you'd probably get some disapproving looks over, looks you would not get at the bar).

This should be included as one of those "Very British Problems" you run across on Buzzfeed.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 23/12/2017 09:31

I reckon the single woman at the bar is available and wants to be chatted up is up there with the myth of the short skirt means she's asking for it- a male fantasy.

twiney · 23/12/2017 09:45

@YetAnotherSpartacus
Yeah, absolute piss take.

@KeepServingTheDrinks
Your DH sounds like a wrong un.

@FrancisCrawford
Christ alive Francis, its not the fifties anymore, a woman get sit at a bar without being considered a floozy you know. How sad you let society dictate that shit for you.

UnicornRainbowColours · 23/12/2017 12:17

Have you considered anger management? I mean wow calling children c*ts And t*ts And ranting because some children sat at the bar. Your OP and responses to people are disgusting.

You might want to take a step back OP and look at how you speak to people.

I'm actually struggling to imagine the OP having any desire to be inconspicuous.

Ruffian · 23/12/2017 14:37

Think the OP is a timid creature in real life who hates to even sit next to another human but longs to be conspicuous on MN so went for a big sweary controversial lunge at a thread. Bit of a sad fail.

The family are annoying dicks. Especially fucking Sophie.

This thread is weird but an amusing read all the same.

Arealhumanbeing · 23/12/2017 15:54

You live by that shit?

MerryMarigold · 23/12/2017 16:37

Don’t be so rude

FrancisCrawford, I'm afraid the OP missed that boat a while ago

I can't believe you travel alone OP Xmas Hmm shocked!

mathanxiety · 23/12/2017 19:15

So let's get this straight:
Letting society dictate where you sit is a bad thing.
Otoh, unspoken rules must be observed.

Somewhere in between is a very, very fine line whose exact location is known only to you and woe betide anyone who crosses it.
