To think this family are twat travellers

Crowded airport.

All restaurants rammed.

I see there's one brasserie style place, also busy, 5 seats at the bar and 2 tables left.

I queue to get food and plan on sitting at the bar. Just as I'm collecting my change two girls appear, running to the bar seats and laughing. Then their mum and dad appear and say "well done Sophie!"

AIBU to think if you're a family you leave the bar seats to solo travellers? The whole point is sitting at the bar is less conspicuous. And also if you take up a table as a solo traveller you often get asked if you mind sharing when a group/family arrives, understandably.

Just think its quite selfish!

Shimmering it's rarely upheld legally, it's more kind of an ingrained custom/courtesy, people are rarely fined but it does happen.

smashyourglasses · 22/12/2017 22:29

"Well done Sophie" - sound like sad cunts 😂

Wholovesorangesoda · 22/12/2017 22:30

I have literally never heard of this either. I would far prefer a table as hate perching on a stool but if that's all that's on offer, that's where I'm sitting.

CurlsandCurves · 22/12/2017 22:30

I’ve started and deleted this post several times. Because I’m utterly baffled.

Never heard of this unwritten rule that says solo travellers sit here and parties of (I don’t know how many, you haven’t stated a start or cut off point) sit somethwere else.

It’s an airport, it’s busy, you take what you can get has always been my experience. Unless you’ve got access to a private lounge.

NotTheQueen · 22/12/2017 22:31

Xmas Hmm and what if you’re five foot and struggle to launch yourself up on a bar stool and find a table more comfortable?

I still where I want, but I will offer to share with any stranglers, groups or singletons

smashyourglasses · 22/12/2017 22:34

Bar seats in restaurants are meant for solo travellers.

End of.

AuldAlliance · 22/12/2017 22:36

I'm quite open minded, but draw the line at stranglers.

CurlsandCurves
I've been thinking about that (mainly because my gut instinct is bar area/smaller tables are for solo travellers and couples).

I wonder if it's less an unwritten rule as such and more maybe taking one idea of courtesy and overapplying it.

E.g. if i was travelling alone, i would feel like a total dickhead for sitting at a 4 table if there was a 2 table or a stool area. I would automatically opt not to take a large table.
So i might think 'how odd that a group would sit where I associate solo people sitting' because it doesnt make sense why you'd sit a group in a long row rather than at a table.

However, it would be an observation on my part and not thr froth inducing irrational rage the OP seems to have.

Bouledeneige · 22/12/2017 22:40

But if I'm a solo traveller why cant I sit at a table? Not fair. I hate bar stools - I always thought they were for boozy men.

ButchyRestingFace · 22/12/2017 22:43

I would sit at a two seater if the place was absolutely hoaching.

Otherwise it’s a four seater all the way.

Hell would freeze over before I sit at a bar stool.

MaisyPops · 22/12/2017 22:43

It's not that you can't.
Just for me, as a solo traveller I would opt for a 2 table or the stool area (even though i'm not a massive fan of the stools) because I find it annoying when I go to cafes etc with friends and there's only tables for 2 left because inconsiderate people are sat alone on 4 tables nursing their coffee.
I don't want to contribute to a problem which annoys me if i can avoid it.

Stranglers Grin

This thread inadvertently turned out funny

CurlsandCurves · 22/12/2017 22:50

@Maisy I have to agree I wouldn’t take up a table for 4 if I was travelling alone. But if that was the only table available I’d take it! I’d happily share with others because it’s an airport situation, not a social engagement.

Flight times being on our side, none of us are there for very long so I don’t see what the big deal is.

smashyourglasses · 22/12/2017 22:51

You can sit at a table as a solo traveller. The seats at the bar are for solo diners who might feel uncomfortable dining alone, or if the restaurant is busy, they will seat you at the bar instead of turning you away or making you queue like everyone else. That's always been my experience as a solo traveller.

PumpkinSquash · 22/12/2017 22:52

Since when?
They're for whoever sits on them.

eastlondoner · 22/12/2017 22:52

There's no unspoken rule for that.

smashyourglasses · 22/12/2017 22:55

A party of two or more gets table priority. Not sure why that would be hard to understand 🤔

TheImportanceofBeingEarnest · 22/12/2017 22:59

Anyfucker stranglers are a different kettle of fish altogether.

I'm a different name now but you're the only person I recognise! Where IS everyone?

MaisyPops · 22/12/2017 22:59

CurlsandCurves
Agreed. If there's no other option then I'd take a table and like you would happily share it with whoever else needs a seat because there's never enough seats in airports.

I wonder a bit whether tje OP (aside from seeming waaaay too annoyed by it) has taken the idea of 'lone travellers don't be that person who sits on a large table when there's other options' and turned it into 'these areas are spaces for lone travellera only'. That or they genuinely are just quite angry, but benefit of the doubt to be given

twiney · 22/12/2017 23:00

@AnyFucker

Well I mean I did start the thread half wanting to discuss the serious issue of bar seating being for solos, but also half because I was at the airport, bored and angsty, and was sure MNers would have SOMETHING to say about this issue. Not goading exactly, maybe goadings more gentle cousin.

Anyway, I'm on the underground now, sadly nothing to bitch about, everyone seems pretty chilled and I'm feeling quite upbeat too.

Its just something about airports, sorry.

Dont even get me started on people who recline on long haul flights as soon as permitted.

AnyFucker · 22/12/2017 23:00

Fuck knows Confused

twiney · 22/12/2017 23:01

@MaisyPops
Its just I would feel like a dick as a lone traveller taking up a table, so don't force me to be that person, go, take the table, be merry with your family, be FREE.

OP posts:
CurlsandCurves · 22/12/2017 23:03

@twiney ooh, reclining on flights, short or long haul?

To quote Chandler from ‘Friends’

‘Can open, worms everywhere!’

😂😂😂
