Everyone obviously thinks what they are telling you is true but sometimes their sources or opinions are not factually correct.

What is the most ridiculous or bizzare fact/opinion you have seen ?

You do realise that MN didn’t invent the concept of the patriarchy don’t you.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriarchy
Which part of males predominating in positions of power, authority and property ownership world-wide do you think the Feminism board made up?

Conniedescending · 24/12/2017 09:21

That's it's illegal for different sex siblings to share a bedroom after a certain age

That being NoK is a legal concept

That large families are dysfunctional

That twigs with lights on are naff

foreverHoldYourPiece · 24/12/2017 09:29

I'm sure no user invented the idea but I've never heard it used in real life. Well, not seriously anyway.

fairgame While that is true about the NSPCC, if the OP should really report but seems reluctant to, it is good advice to contact the NSPCC. Because I assume they will talk to them about the need to report, and perhaps take details themselves. That is why I recommend it, to any OP reluctant to report. I know it will be SS that actually look at and assess the report. But getting people to make a report when it sounds like a potentially very dangerous situation, is a really important first step.

crunchymint · 24/12/2017 11:49

And I assume that anyone who laughs at the thought of a patriarchy is a bit thick.

IQ is not linked to opinion

That's hilarious. You don't actually believe that do you?

RoboticSealpup · 24/12/2017 11:55

Yeah the patriarchy is so funny. The fact that women get raped more, murdered by partners more, paid less, worse jobs and pensions and a heavier burden of home and family work. Hilarious.

Finding it hilarious means that you really haven;t read and understood what is meant by the patriarchy. You don't have to agree with it, but finding it hilarious as a concept means you either have very rigid views and can not consider other views, or you are too thick to consider what other people are saying.

CurryWorst · 24/12/2017 12:03

I know many incredibly “clever” people who hold opinions that are wildly at odds with each other. Did you think that opinions neatly sorted us into levels of IQ

So they are at odds with each other, the point is that opinions need to be based on facts. If you don't have the intelligence to understand the facts, your opinion is based on nothing.
Yes, of course the worth of opinions is based on IQ, and experience, and knowledge. How could it possibly not be?

There are different kinds of intelligence. Someone may be academically able to understand a particular subject, but be unintelligent in other ways.

I actually know someone like this. A chemist who got a first class degree so presumably good at chemistry. Who is not intelligent in other ways, and very very emotionally unintelligent.

Hmmmmm. So how do you explain democracy? Each person getting one vote?

how is that a relevant question? Democracy gave us Brexit and Trump. Not really a good point about IQ levels, is it? Stupid people voted for stupid things.
Proves my point exactly.

crunchymint · 24/12/2017 12:11

Yes someone said the concept of patriarchy made them laugh. You are right that is the exact wording. No not an intelligent opinion.

BeyondAssignation · 24/12/2017 12:13

IQ is one rigid marker of intelligence, biased towards males and white people in the West. It is far from the only way in which someone can be intelligent.

Mine is high btw, before you say that is something someone with a lower IQ would say! Grin

crunchymint · 24/12/2017 12:13

zzzz Yes people have different strengths. But this is an internet forum where only opinions matter. Someone unable to look at different information and form an opinion from the facts they have, is not going to come across well on here.

BeyondAssignation · 24/12/2017 12:15

I would say that someone with a lower IQ who is good at reading and analysing evidence would have an opinion worth more weight than someone with a high IQ who believes what is said by a particular newspaper.

crunchymint · 24/12/2017 12:16

No one else is equating intelligence with IQ.

CurryWorst · 24/12/2017 12:16

I would say that someone with a lower IQ who is good at reading and analysing evidence would have an opinion worth more weight than someone with a high IQ who believes what is said by a particular newspaper

Sure, but its much more likely that they would be swapped around. Higher IQ means you are less likely to believe what you read and more likely to be good at reading and analysing everything.

But lets not pretend we are talking about IQ tests precisely. We all know the notion that opinions and intelligence are not linked is laughable.

BeyondAssignation · 24/12/2017 12:19

They might correlate, but that'd be it. There's nothing on an IQ test that measures comprehension - not that I remember, but it's been a while

(I'm not arguing against anyone in case that isn't clear, more thinking aloud)
