Everyone obviously thinks what they are telling you is true but sometimes their sources or opinions are not factually correct.

What is the most ridiculous or bizzare fact/opinion you have seen ?

A doctor has a duty of care to intervene in every incident otherwise they’ll see get struck off

Actually there’s no legal obligation to intervene but there is good Samaritan principle, after considering risk (is it safe) and skills/experience

redexpat · 20/12/2017 19:11

Now I'm confused. How are you all pronouncing Shaun and shorn? I had no idea this would be so controversial.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 20/12/2017 19:14

To me, Shorn and Shaun are pronounced completely differently
There was a thread once folk vehemently arguing over pronunciation Evelyn
Some folk were adamant it’s ever-lynn

spurtions · 20/12/2017 19:23

Retirement age of 65/7 is too old and anyone over the age of 50 or even mid 40’s is becoming way too tired and has far too many issues to even consider working past early 50’s at the latest. Obviously some people are but on the real world most people are more than able, and expect to work until well into their 60’s and don’t feel that it’s too exhausting and neither do they actually want to stop working and sit pondering their navels for 30 years

sinceyouask · 20/12/2017 19:32

Can someone who pronounces Shaun and shorn differently please post the phonetic versions of the words as they would say them? It's driving me mad that I can't work it out. Otherwise I'll end up phoning my dad and demanding he says them he will think I am madder than usual

CurryWorst · 20/12/2017 19:39

I say them a bit differently but close enough to get the joke!

Sean (Shaun) is like sh-awn with no R sound and shorn is more like sh-or-n with a proper R in the middle. Not sure if that makes any sense though.

StripySocksAndDocs · 20/12/2017 19:43

Don't think 'shorn' have a variety of pronunciations (least I don't know of any). I'd say Shorn like I say Seán

I say Sean/Seán/Shaun /Shawn like this:

Anyone over 45, usually a mil, who is clearly an utter bitch could be suffering from onset altzimers Grin any one using a lift could have a hidden disability

I love knowing that the wispy spiders are called Pholcus phalangioides! Thanks Ifailed They don't scare me like their chunkier cousins and I'm thrilled that they eat them :D
Lots of contradictory attitudes to DHs - LTB for coughing or stay with him if he's being an utter cockwomble.
Massive salaries - £100K plus - being sooooooo hard to live on.
Humble brags about everything from Felicia being fluent in Chinese and able to crochet at 3 years old, to huge houses and unique jobs and hobbies.
And thinly disguised hatred for schools and teachers. yes, I'm one of those awful people you hate. Please home school/move school if you feel that way.

Mumsnet is a pretty negative site. In fact, most posts are depressing. I should stop reading...

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 20/12/2017 20:48

I don’t think mn is negative, it’s actually funny and a particular angle at times
I do think mn has got a mc affluent Home Counties emphasis

Posts about mega-earning dp who simply can’t do any domestic task, and need a sahp to run house.he’d be nowt without his dp,apparently
Women who can’t get job cause they’re so busy doing enriching things and ferrying dc to mandarin, violin, tap
Scant understanding of anything legal.mn regularly advise women to change home locks after any disagreements. No notion of the dp being a co-owner

LaurieMarlow · 20/12/2017 20:50

Whoops, fail. What I meant to say was, more an opinion, but the idea that once you have children you can never, ever have a drink when in charge of them in case you need to drive them to casualty.

The weirdest one for me personally was someone who quite genuinely thought it neglect to leave a child under 16 at home alone without a responsible adult, and preferably a parent, ever.

I dunno, maybe I'm just ridiculously laissez-faire, but for the average, neurotypical child... sixteen? Really?

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 20/12/2017 21:26

I also cannot stand this abbreviation nonsense, dd and ds and aibu. I really can't be bothered to find out what it all means or decode it. What is going on?

BeyondAssignation · 20/12/2017 22:14

I've never seen anyone advise people to change the locks. In fact, I usually see exactly the opposite - "if you are joint owners/tenants, you cannot legally change the locks"

There are a few change locks, lock him out on the go v recently
It’s pretty standard response to any perceived misdemeanours

Littlecaf · 20/12/2017 22:28

That if you’re not married by live with your DP and have kids together, you’ll automatically get fucked over when (not if) he leave you as it’ll all automatically go to him whatever you earn or the kids want or need.

Also that he’ll leave you or kick you out, not the other way round.

Also that this type of relationship never works. (Because nobody ever gets divorced).

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 20/12/2017 22:34

Yes if you’re unmarried it’s because he doesn’t really weelly love you.if he did he marry you
The unmarried partner is the trial girl til he meets the for keeps one he’ll marry

MaisyPops · 20/12/2017 22:53

That all monies must be family money if woman sahm otherwise he’s controlling
monies must not be shared if the woman is sole the wageearner.hesa cocklodger
Man polices woman's friendships abd checks phone then he's controlling, abusive and woman should LTB.

Woman polices man's friendships and checks his phone then it's a cheeky snoop and really he shouldn't object if he has nothing to hide. In fact, he should be willing to make sacrifices for thr woman and prove he loves her.

And if you poibt out any of these double standards it's obviously internalized misogyny keeping you in your place.
