Caked in makeup

Why do some women plaster it on like there's no tomorrow, on the school run, everyday without fail. Not just subtle but full on caked in the stuff. AIBU to think why?

OP posts:
Thetreesareallgone · 16/12/2017 22:22

It's not really a Style and Beauty question though, is it? It's a nasty comment- 'plastered in make-up'. She's not after tips to achieve that look, is she? Just an opportunity to sneer at those who do look like that.

Gwenhwyfar · 16/12/2017 22:24

Of course it's a style and beauty question.
It's like 'why do some women like cold shouldered tops?'
A lot of the discussions on Style and Beauty are not about looking for tips, but about complaining about current fashions.

gillybeanz · 16/12/2017 22:24

Round here, the women go out in curlers and wear lots of orange coloured make up, it's like the shops don't sell any other shades and for most it looks awful as is the wrong shade.
They look like Oompa Loompas.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing make up all the time if it makes the person happy, but badly applied or the wrong shade, looks awful.

Gwenhwyfar · 16/12/2017 22:26

Where do you live gilly?

gillybeanz · 16/12/2017 22:27

A town in the NW, Greater Manchester, is as far as I'll admit to Grin

TooManyPaws · 16/12/2017 22:29

Frankly I simply can't be arsed, even for work. I used to be very self-conscious because my father was always critical if I didn't wear make up but now I don't have that. I've had acne for nearly 50 years and since menopause have developed spots that look like open sores but I'd rather keep them clean for the medical stuff.

My scrubbed face never bothered former partners who rarely saw me in makeup. Frankly I'd rather have 15 minutes more in bed than contouring and sharpieing.

MistressDeeCee · 16/12/2017 22:34

Because they like it
Because they have a skin condition and/or scars
Because they feel they look prettier, healthier, attractive in full makeup

Could be all sorts of reasons couldn't there?

Still, it gives The Self Appointed Judges Of Women more to sneer about I suppose

HipNewName · 16/12/2017 22:36

Some people who always wear very thick make up are covering up scars or birthmarks.

Some people are doing the school run on the way to someplace else, so they are really dressed / made up for the other thing.

PoorYorick · 16/12/2017 22:37

I'm not judging

God, of course you are.

himynameiss · 16/12/2017 22:37

Who has time before the school run to do there make up Xmas Shock

LoniceraJaponica · 16/12/2017 22:40

Excellent post LadyOfThe Canyon. I can understand why women wear make up to feel good about themselves, but I don’t understand the drag queen look for day to day wear. Someone on my team at work wears so much make up it looks like she is wearing a mask.

I don’t cake it on because I would just look like Barbara Cartland Grin. At my age less is more.

“I happen to like how flawless my skin looks with a good foundation, the way the right contour can slim my face and highlighter accentuates my cheekbones, how a good eyeliner makes my eyes look wider open and the right shadow accentuates my eye colour.”

This is the reason I would wear make-up, but you can achieve that without trowelling it on.

Gwenhwyfar · 16/12/2017 22:40

"I'm not judging

God, of course you are."

She's judging the person's taste in makeup, but not the person as a whole I think. We all have likes and dislikes. How many people dislike crocks? Plenty, I'd wager. Does it mean we judge crock wearers? Probably only in terms of their choice of shoe.

uglyflowers · 16/12/2017 22:42

I have a big scar on my face, all the way down. I wear think foundation to hide it. Then if you wear a heavy base you have to bring out your features again with other make up. All my bloody life I've had women telling me not to wear make up as 'men like the natural look' or I'm too young to wear it etc etc. Thankfully I'm older now so no one says it to my face. Anyway, I've worn make up every day since my accident age 15 and it makes me feel OK about myself. I even wear it to the pool. Its my face and I have to live with it. Hope this answers your question op.

Phalenopsisgirl · 16/12/2017 22:42

I have Rosacea and so will always wear some kind of foundation, then because I’ve put that on, my eyes would look awful if I don’t do eye make up and it just makes sense to finish with something on my lips even if it’s just a slick of nude

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 16/12/2017 22:45

Wow, lot of judgemental women on this thread! Bow about just accepting different people like to do different things? As a woman who will not leave the house without being 'caked' in makeup, I do not ever judge other women who choose not to wear any at all! What gives you the right to judge women who do like to??
Personally I like wearing makeup as it gives me more confidence when my blemishes and dark circles are covered! I like putting makeup on as part of my routine, I find it relaxing and it's like painting a work of art every morning! I enjoy trying different products, different looks, and I enjoy receiving compliments on it too!
Everyone; just carry on doing what you do, whether that be wearing makeup or not.

Phalenopsisgirl · 16/12/2017 22:45

Uglyflowers - snap. That is what I was trying to say, the foundation makes your other features look odd and sunken unless you enhance them too

PippaSqueaks · 16/12/2017 22:48

Maybe because their self confidence is low and this is one thing that gives them a little boost and makes them feel a little better about themselves?

Maybe it makes their day a little easier knowing that they look better than with no makeup.

Who cares why they do it?

But, maybe they wouldn't need that boost to their self confidence if they didn't come across judgemental people like YOU!

I judge you more than them .

Phalenopsisgirl · 16/12/2017 22:48

I think make up can be one of those things that you can easily fall into the habit of wearing more and more of. Over time the eye gets a bit more smokey, the foundation a bit more flawless etc

Schlimbesserung · 16/12/2017 22:50

I never wear makeup, because I don't want to. If someone else wears a load of makeup that's good too, so long as they do it because they want to.
The only problem I have is that I think it's sad when women wear makeup because they think they need it to look acceptable.
Judging and bitching about other women's faces is a waste of time and helps nobody.

Ollivander84 · 16/12/2017 22:55

Because I want to? Some days I wear v little but my level of very little is other people's full face. Sometimes I've done my makeup before a shoot and stopped at a shop to grab something on the way - if you saw me I would look "caked" but photos generally require much more makeup!

Today is v little for me but is still a fair bit, took around 10 mins
Eye primer and two eyeshadows and liner and mascara
Concealer and foundation
Powder, blush, highlight
Mascara
Brow gel

gillybeanz · 16/12/2017 22:57

It's good for their "elf esteem" gives them "elf confidence"

Arscal · 16/12/2017 23:01

I do find it interesting that, as with OP, there is often strong opinion about women wearing make up “on the school run”. Always find that particularly odd.
Anyway, why give a second thought as to what someone else does with their face?
You crack on with no make-up should you choose to and I’ll wear a full face, or I won’t. Really no need for anyone else to give a flying sh*t.

I won't leave the house without a full face of make up and my fake eyelashes unless I'm really ill. I personally don't care for judgments like the OP, it's part of my morning routine so I have the time and at least I look alive.

Judge away, I know I always look fabulous.

ReallyConvolutedCareerHistory · 16/12/2017 23:03

Probably because they enjoy putting and wearing makeup.
