Caked in makeup

Why do some women plaster it on like there's no tomorrow, on the school run, everyday without fail. Not just subtle but full on caked in the stuff. AIBU to think why?

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 16/12/2017 21:27

I think it doesn’t matter does it? Why do sone people not care? Why do some people care only a little, why do some people care a lot. Who cares, what’s important is us as people not how much make up we chose to wear.

NurseButtercup · 16/12/2017 21:27

I wear makeup most days because I like how I look when I wear makeup.

Lisa Eldridge has just posted a beautiful makeup tutorial with the supermodel Natasha Poly. I do wish more women watched Lisa Eldridge and adopted her less is more approach to applying makeup ;-)

DistanceCall · 16/12/2017 21:32

Because they like it?

OhOfCourse · 16/12/2017 21:33

This is such a nasty, goady thread.

Leave women alone. You sound judgey and come across as though you feel you're better than most.

BelfortGabbz · 16/12/2017 21:35

I wear it because it's less trouble than explaining I'm not about to pop my clogs anytime soon!

Crispbutty · 16/12/2017 21:35

Since the age of 14 I’ve worn make up every day.

When I met DP he hated kissing (and still does) lipstick so as I preferred snogging him to wearing it I got used to it. We relocated from London to a very rural area 250 miles south and to be honest most women wear no or minimal make up day to day. Now on the rare occasions I put it on for a night out I do feel like a drag queen 😂. It’s saved me a fortune too.

Italiangreyhound · 16/12/2017 21:36

Because they want to.
Because they can.
Because their husbands or boyfriends expect it.
Because they think their husbands or boyfriends expect it
Because other women expect it.
Because they think other women expect it
Because they have been told they look ill, or pale, or tired without it
Because they love how it makes them feel
Because they hate how they feel without it
Because they suffer from acne or Rosacea or any other skin condition
Because they once suffered acne or Rosacea or any other skin condition
Because 'society' can make women feel undressed without make up
Because in our society now being a consumer is highly prized 'bare skin' costs nothing, make costs a lot
Or something else

Take your pick....

chandlersfraud · 16/12/2017 21:36

It's not for me. Partly because I can't be arsed. Partly because I don't know what I'm doing so always think I'll look ridiculous. Partly because I don't particularly like that 'look'. But also it must be really stressful to be in the habit and then feel like you can't not wear it all because people have never seen you not wearing it and might think you look ill.

But each to their own.

I guess some people think they look nicer with it.

For others perhaps it's a mask and a low self esteem thing.

silkpyjamasallday · 16/12/2017 21:36

@LadyOfTheCanyon summed up my feelings on the matter perfectly. The over sexualised makeup trends once only sported by pornstars or drag queens are smeared all over young girls faces wherever you go, girls who have not yet had the life experience to consider why they make the choices they have in terms of their appearance and are heavily influenced by their peers and social media to conform. I think it is very sad that we have lost sight of what a woman's face actually looks like, and have been marketed to so aggressively to hate ourselves the way we are, and to see an unmade up face as a lack of effort that we should be making in order to look 'good'. I have friends who are professional makeup artists, and even they don't look better with makeup in my opinion, and at least they can apply it better than most. Makeup seems to be the most rampant form of consumerism nowadays and its poisonous. I don't judge people for wearing it, everyone can make their own choices, but there does need to be a realisation that these choices are not made in a vacuum.

Gemini69 · 16/12/2017 21:37

I stare in amazement at the young chec- out girls incredible ability to apply PERFECT winged... liquid eyeliner.... I'm mid forties and still struggle with THAT craft... dammit Xmas Grin

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 16/12/2017 21:40

ItalianGreyhound. I think you have summed it all up.

— wonders why op is so interested in what others wear—

Thetreesareallgone · 16/12/2017 21:59

I think this is rubbish, make-up has been worn in the Blitz (red lippy), the Sixties (incredibly heavy eyeliner), the Seventies (glitter), the 80's (blue/green eyeshadow), the 90's (bright red lipstick again) and onwards. It's changed in style, but ordinary women have been wearing make-up in everyday life for decades now, not only in porn videos!

yippyyappy · 16/12/2017 21:59

You know what? I suffer from acne rosacea really badly at times and get extremely res, blood shot skin with massive pus filled boils.

I live somewhere where most women don't wear any make up ever. Even mascara.

When I'm suffering an attack, I'd rather not go out than go out with full make up on. When I've gone without people stare at me, gasp, bluntly ask 'what's wrong with me?'

Yet when I wear it I get the 'oh look she's caked in makeup' looks.

So yeah, thanks for starting such a cunty thread that's made me feel even more self conscious. Angry

Italiangreyhound · 16/12/2017 22:00

I wore thick make up at 16 because I had spots. People have told me I look good when I wear make up and others have asked if I am tired or ill sometimes when I do not wear it.

I don't hate make up, I like it. And i think unless you are naturally very beautiful it does tend to improve on nature. but I wonder why women need improvement and men do not!

Sandyfeet101 · 16/12/2017 22:02

I hate the ‘oh I never wear foundation, lucky old me, I have good skin’ posts. I don’t wear a lot of make up but I always have a bit of foundation and concealer on. Guess i’m not so lucky ...

Italiangreyhound · 16/12/2017 22:03

Thank you PricillaQueenOfTheDesert.

yippyyappy honestly lots of people are not thinking anything when they see another women made up or not. Some people always wear make up to work etc and many mums are dropping off in heels and suits, uniforms etc so I would never question what anyone is wearing or why at school drop off or otherwise. Thanks

iloveroastpotatoes · 16/12/2017 22:08

What a horrible thread. How much is too much? Is it because it is no longer natural? In which case, why does anyone wear makeup at all?
What about dyed hair? Nail polish? Clothes? Eating processed food? Piercings? Tattoos? I'd hate to feel judged on any of those choices; I'd hope my friends take into account my good nature and generosity and loyalty rather than my gel nails.

notsohippychick · 16/12/2017 22:10

You are judging.

What on Earth has it got to do with you??

They may have skin conditions they wish to cover up, feel better with a bit of slap?

Whatever reason, it shouldn’t bother you if you are secure in yourself. Let it go.

itsallrelative2017 · 16/12/2017 22:12

What exactly is a "sexualised makeup trend"? Cos I'll be frigged if I know....... Hmm

Gwenhwyfar · 16/12/2017 22:12

People are misunderstanding the OP. She's not asking why do women wear makeup - she wears makeup herself. She's asking why some women are 'caked' in it i.e. they put a very thick layer on.
I wonder myself too and I suppose it can only be that they think it looks good. I know someone who does this and I personally don't like the way she looks close up, but she actually looks great in photos. Thick makeup can look bad close up and in natural daylight, but good on TV and in photos.

Yanbu op. Really heavy makeup never looks good ime. It's just a fashion I don't like and am looking forward to it going away.

Gwenhwyfar · 16/12/2017 22:18

Maybe ask for this to be moved to Style and Beauty OP. People here seem to think you can't have an opinion on anything to do with appearances.

justasking123 · 16/12/2017 22:21

OP can have an opinion, however OP is judging people!
