Cancelled an order the day after I purchased it. On live chat, they refunded me.

End of ... I thought.

Today it’s been delivered. I can’t be bothered with the hassle of returning it, aibu to keep it?

OP posts:
oliveinacampervan · 12/12/2017 09:12

Some poor sod made a mistake and would be punished for it.

Yep they certainly would.

If you can live with your conscience I guess you could keep it, but I'd be emailing/phoning the company to let them know they had screwed up and sent me something I hadn't paid for.

Yes I could live with my conscience. I have done worse.

I just wouldn't be able to enjoy having whatever it was knowing I hadn't paid for it.

I would.

FFS Send it back. otherwise you are Stealing

Nah, it's a freebie, they sent it to the OP in error, she never asked them to, she cancelled the order.

Genuine question: why the urge to keep something you never paid for?

The Op did pay for it but they refunded her. Their error, their loss.

I have said I would not and meant it. Breathtaking lack of moral compass.

Yep I have a BREATHtaking lack of moral compass. Oh the drama, it's soooooo breathtaking!! BREATHTAKING I tells ya!Shock

You have obviously been raised without being taught the most basic of morals and I pity you.

You're probably right, but no need to pity me hun. I probably have more WAY stuff than you. Some of it I paid for, some of it I had given to me, some of it is poached, some accidentally sent to me....Grin

I have lost stuff that has never been returned (in the past,) it's just re-addressing the universal balance.

Have a good day all. I'm just off to the coffee morning at community centre to nick a few mince pies. Save me buying so many next week. Smile

I'll leave you all to clean your soapboxes, and polish your halos! Grin

You sound like a drunk who points and taunts, oliveinacampervan.

clockworklime · 12/12/2017 09:20

Why keep it? You cancelled the order, so you didn‘t want it. Send it back.

FiveShelties · 12/12/2017 09:21

If you paid and they did not send it, would you be OK with that?

Anatidae · 12/12/2017 09:22

Contact them amd tell them that you will return it but they need to arrange pickup. You shouldn’t be out of pocket, nor should you keep without telling them.

This has happened to me a couple of times - in all cases customer services have told me to keep the item rather than go to the hassle of picking it up, but I’d feel dishonest keeping it without telling them.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 12/12/2017 09:23

'If you paid and they did not send it, would you be OK with that?'

This! And I somehow think the answer would be no.

I'm no saint or righteous moral frother, but some of the moral 'standards' I see on here are truly disturbing.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/12/2017 09:25

These threads bug me.

No matter how you dress it up it’s theft. But those saying they would keep it already know that.

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/12/2017 09:26

Contact them, tell them and ask them what they want you to do.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/12/2017 09:27

Olive hun me thinks you’re on one big MN wind up.

OnionKnight · 12/12/2017 09:28

I’d keep it and I’ve done so in the past, Amazon refunded me for a faulty item and they also sent me a replacement after I sent the faulty item back.

userabcname · 12/12/2017 09:33

I had this with Tesco Direct. Rang them and they told me to keep it.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 12/12/2017 09:38

I'd contact the company and let them know, then it's up to them what they want you to do.

LemonShark · 12/12/2017 09:42

Contact them and ask what they want you to do with it. It's simple surely?

A few months back i ordered a game and it didn't turn up so I contacted the company (third party seller via amazon) who refunded it. A week later it finally arrived! So I contacted them to process the payment again as I now had the item. A lot of online shopping relies on some goodwill and honesty, as companies would rather believe you that it hasn't arrived and refund you than deal with the hassle and damaged reputation. So show some goodwill back and hold up your end of the bargain. They may not even want it back but you should ask.

Chrys2017 · 12/12/2017 09:45

no need to pity me hun. I probably have more WAY stuff than you

Olive just won Christmas!

WitchesHatRim · 12/12/2017 09:48

Most people would. Whether they admit it or not

Speak for yourself. I wouldn't.

Elephanah · 12/12/2017 09:48

Keep it. I kept a PS4 that was sent to me in error. But the company had fucked me about previously and added charges on for a previous order (lied about a promo code which caused me to lose out on a large amoun t and refused to recify) so I thought 'fuck them'.

The way it happened there's no paper trail so they can't prove anything.

Migraleve · 12/12/2017 09:49

Assuming you cancelled it because you no longer wanted it, for whatever reason, why would you then consider keeping it?

Mintychoc1 · 12/12/2017 09:49

oliveinacampervan you may have lots of stuff, but all the stuff in the world isn't worth it, if the trade-off is being an unpleasant person. And I believe in karma.

OP you should tell the company, then they can decide if they want it back or if they're going to let you keep it for free. You aren't obliged to go to lots of trouble returning it though, that is their job.

nannybeach · 12/12/2017 09:50

I have had this happen, contacted the company who said keep it, otherwise, it would have been returned stealing is stealing, no matter what and how big the company.

AmysTiara · 12/12/2017 09:50

Olive sounds weird.

I'd phone them and get them to collect it.

MadamPatti · 12/12/2017 09:53

I had this with a PS4 that I ordered from a catalogue company around Black Friday. Cancelled, then the thing turned up the next day. Was a struggle to return as they didn’t include a proper returns note, but wouldn’t have occurred to me not to.

BreatheMeIn · 12/12/2017 09:55

Most people would. Whether they admit it or not wink

This. Id keep it.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 12/12/2017 09:55

Send it back, you cancelled the order because you didn’t want the item. Don’t keep something because you perceive it to be free, it isn’t.

christmasqueries · 12/12/2017 09:57

I got sent an additional kitchen appliance from a very naice high street store. I tried to return it in-store but it wasn't possible because it was an online order. I tried to get it sent back using one of the Collect plus place but the return address barcode didn't work. So sod it, I've kept it.

C8H10N4O2 · 12/12/2017 10:00

Contact them, tell them to arrange collection or supply a returns label, whichever is more convenient to you.

If its a small item from a large company they will quite possibly not bother but keeping something sent in error is theft.
As someone says up thread - large online sellers often house lots of small sellers, including your fellows here. There is no such thing as victimless crime.

As for people who boast about thieving on a public forum - well anyone that foolish is probably not someone to take advice from.
