Cancelled an order the day after I purchased it. On live chat, they refunded me.

End of ... I thought.

Today it’s been delivered. I can’t be bothered with the hassle of returning it, aibu to keep it?

I am obviously quite morally flawed, as if it was a small item, I'd probably just keep it. All these posters actually swearing at the OP for asking - wow. No way would I get that worked up about it. I am clearly a bad person for not getting so het up.

Having said that, we bought an all-singing, all-dancing BBQ last weekend and it got delivered. Plus a second one. No doubt at all in that instance that we called up to let them know of their error.

paxillin · 12/12/2017 01:07

I would not keep it, however much you wink.

Snortles · 12/12/2017 01:10

I'm in a similar-ish dilemma. I accidentally placed an order (from a big company) to my former address 150 miles away Blush Didn't realize until it was too late and order had been processed. When I informed them on the online chat, I was told order would go through regardless, I would be refunded (as item was now out of stock), and it would be up to residents of that address to send it back. Anyway coincidentally a week later my ex-neighbour (from 150 miles away) rang for a chat. I explained what had happened and she popped next door and retrieved parcel. Except it had been opened although the items are still sealed. New resident had no intention of sending it back clearly! I may go visit after xmas and see ex-neighbour. After I have my items I will contact company and ask what they want me to do. Hopefully they won't mind me keeping the stuff!

If there was no way of it being proven that it was delivered, would I fuck send it back!

paxillin · 12/12/2017 01:22

I find this extremely insulting and odious, @oliveinacampervan. I have said I would not and meant it. Breathtaking lack of moral compass. Some poor sod made a mistake and would be punished for it. If the company said keep it, it would be more hassle to to collect (as happened with the table mentioned by a pp) it would be a different matter.

Accusing people of stuff like that is a fucking personal attack.

Katedotness1963 · 12/12/2017 01:32

Every time there's one of these threads I'm surprised how many dishonest people there are...

Oswin · 12/12/2017 01:50

If it's amazon they will probably tell you to to keep it. I've had a few double items every time I ring they say just keep it.

paxillin · 12/12/2017 01:51

Indeed. Equally astonishing as the number is the degree of dishonesty. How normal must dishonesty seem if somebody less corrupt is unimaginable?

SilverySurfer · 12/12/2017 01:58

oliveinacampervan
If you signed for it, return it. If not, and there is no proof it was delivered, keep it. Most people would. Whether they admit it or not wink

You have obviously been raised without being taught the most basic of morals and I pity you. You are wrong, most people would not keep the item although there are apparently others on this thread with the same lack of moral compass. You certainly have no right to speak for me.

DeadMorose · 12/12/2017 02:05

Keep it. They will tell you to keep it anyway.

HuskyMcClusky · 12/12/2017 02:09

Fuck’s sake, really? Contact them and get it collected. Obviously.

Argeles · 12/12/2017 02:13

Keep it.

If they enquire about it at some point in the future, just say that you never received the item (if you didn’t have to sign for it).

HuskyMcClusky · 12/12/2017 02:17

Genuine question: why the urge to keep something you never paid for?

I wouldn’t go out of my way to get it back to them (their mistake and all), but I’d certainly let them know I had it and let them collect if they wanted to.

Why wouldn’t you? Confused

Charolais · 12/12/2017 02:36

Let them know of their mistake.

OtterInDisgrace · 12/12/2017 02:42

You can’t be bothered to return it? Why not contact the company and ask them to collect it?

Otherwise ‘can’t be bothered’ sounds like ‘want something for free’.

Chrys2017 · 12/12/2017 02:44

You can keep unsolicited goods (i.e. things you never ordered).
You can't keep orders sent in error—that's an entirely different thing.

Call the company and tell them to come and collect it at a time that is convenient to you. They might just tell you to keep it. However, as you cancelled the order presumably you didn't want it, so why do you want it now?

heartyrebel · 12/12/2017 02:44

This has happened to me. I ordered some art from overseas then when I realised how much tax and duty I'd have to pay I cancelled and got a refund but they accidentally sent it. I emailed and they said to keep it

TheMaddHugger · 12/12/2017 03:01

FFS Send it back. otherwise you are Stealing

VegasWithRadishes · 12/12/2017 03:30

Amazon might be a big company but it's individual sellers who pay the price.
I sold on amazon for a couple of years - I was a pretty big seller (but a small business with only one employee excluding myself) I'd be gutted if someone wasn't honest with me in this way because
"Amazon is a big company"
Send it back op.
The person who packed and dispatched the order may also be in trouble if they dispatched it while it was cancelled - particularly if they just didn't notice a "cancelled" on the packing form, or didn't check. That's pay docking/hour losing territory right there....

Basecamp21 · 12/12/2017 03:43

Just hold onto it for a while and if they do not contact you then keep it.

You have done nothing intentionally so you have no obligation to remedy it. If it is a small family firm I would return something but not from a large company.

As for morals......when these companies ensure all their staff and especially ensure the people making the products where ever they are in the world are paid a fair and decent wage before lining the pockets of the bosses and shareholders then I might give a stuff. Being as rich as Midas whilst the people whose backs you have made your money off can barely eat is infinitely more immoral than keeping a parcel sent to you in error.

ShowOfHands · 12/12/2017 03:45

Small business send it back. Big chain keep it

What a marvellous way of deciding upon your moral compass. I'm going to adopt this logic in general. I will only steal from rich friends and only kick ugly puppies from now on.

Bloopbleep · 12/12/2017 03:58

Amazon have never told me to keep something. I’ve even had emails from them chasing me up for things months after I’ve already returned them and threatening to take more money as payment if I don’t return them. Was fun trying to sort that one out!

GoBigOrange · 12/12/2017 04:07

If you can live with your conscience I guess you could keep it, but I'd be emailing/phoning the company to let them know they had screwed up and sent me something I hadn't paid for. I just wouldn't be able to enjoy having whatever it was knowing I hadn't paid for it.

I wouldn't be schlepping to the post office at their convenience or paying for postage though, so if they wanted whatever it was back then they would need to pay and arrange it. I don't think that is unfair.

If it is something fairly inexpensive they will probably tell you to keep it anyway. And even if it is expensive you may get lucky.

Amazon in particular have sent me the wrong stuff quite a few times, and have never done anything except apologize and tell me to keep the item.

YellowMakesMeSmile · 12/12/2017 07:13

Keeping it would be theft but many are happy to sanction that.

We all pay extra for goods for dishonest customers that do this or shop lift etc.
