Cancelled an order the day after I purchased it. On live chat, they refunded me.

End of ... I thought.

Today it’s been delivered. I can’t be bothered with the hassle of returning it, aibu to keep it?

We ordered a bed from a large company, they sent 3! We. Allied them, they said they could come and get them but it would be a nuisance as they were so busy, we weren’t prepared to store 2 cabin beds over Christmas! They were huge, 4 big boxes. They said to sell them on, each bed cost £600, if I’d have sold them but new house and Christmas coming I really don’t have the time. They came to collect them
...........3 times!

Trinity66 · 12/12/2017 13:56

Keep it

Bigkingdom · 12/12/2017 13:59

Send it back. I couldn't be doing with the hassle of knowing they could chase me for the money or whatever.

RoseWhiteTips · 12/12/2017 14:56

It is great to see that people with a strong moral code are in the majority in this thread.

RoseWhiteTips · 12/12/2017 14:57

...on this thread.

RestingGrinchFace · 12/12/2017 14:58

Return it if they have provided return postage at your leisure. If not then contact them and see what they say.

RoseWhiteTips · 12/12/2017 14:59

shouldaknownbetter

I have a policy of 'their mistake = my gain'' with these sorts of things.

If that makes me a thief in some people's eyes I really couldn't give a shiny shit.

There is no “If” about it. You ARE a thief.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 12/12/2017 15:03

How can you be a thief? surely stealing is taking something without payment or permission etc. The op didn't take anything, she was sent something.

Taffeta · 12/12/2017 15:05

This has happened a number of times to me. Most often, I’ve been told to keep it. Sometimes they’ve arranged a courier to collect it. This is fine, happy with that too.

One company expected me to travel 5 miles to post office and pay for return postage. Their mistake they’d sent two. I told them to do one, bit that I’d be happy to return the item if they sent someone to collect it, or at the very least sent me a return label. They did neither so I kept it.

JacquesHammer · 12/12/2017 15:07

Because she is keeping something she ordered (the cancelling it a red herring, the fact she ordered at all means it's solicited mail) without the intention to pay for them

Spartaca · 12/12/2017 15:11

I would tell them, and ask them to make arrangements to collect it or send free postage etc. I'm not the most honest of people, but would try.

mistermagpie · 12/12/2017 15:12

I'm always baffled by how worked up people get on these threads... what difference does it make to you if the OP keeps it?

Personally I would probably contact them and get them to come and pick it up. If they don't want to do that then fair enough!

AppleKatie · 12/12/2017 15:14

The moral outrage on these threads is quite funny.

wednesdayswench · 12/12/2017 15:25

@AppleKatie I agree Grin

RoseWhiteTips · 12/12/2017 15:34

Thievery, in the other hand, is not at all funny.Hmm

RoseWhiteTips · 12/12/2017 15:38

on the other hand

AppleKatie · 12/12/2017 15:39

Oh I don't know.

Cancelled order but still sent? Aibu to keep it?
GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/12/2017 15:44

Moral outrage? Nope. Just not a thief.

SuburbanRhonda · 12/12/2017 15:44

If they enquire about it at some point in the future, just say that you never received the item (if you didn’t have to sign for it).

Stealing and lying! Great advice Hmm

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/12/2017 15:45

Yes, me too. I’d rather have an easy conscience, and know I had been honest.

goose1964 · 12/12/2017 16:08

I'm sure distance selling regulations are in force here so you need to notify them of the delivery and it's their responsibility to collect it or it's yours

QuackPorridgeBacon · 12/12/2017 16:13

Fair enough. I don’t know enough about that but in my head stealing is knowingly taking something without permission. Receiving something in error is not stealing. I wouldn’t lie about receiving the item if asked though, that’s too far. I also wouldn’t make the effort to send it back as it wasn’t my error. Regardless of paying then cancelling and being refunded I just can’t see how it is stealing if you made the company aware you no longer wanted the item. If they send it after that it is their fault only.

LadyDeadpool · 12/12/2017 16:34

Olive sounds like a scav in the language of my playground days! Honestly two wrongs don't make a right and bragging about it just lets people know what sort of person you are. Can't believe how you're bragging. Karma takes her time but she'll get round to you one day.

mommytoboo86 · 12/12/2017 16:34

I probably would keep it these days Tbh.
I ordered some 2 wardrobes sets from very a while ago and on delivery I realised they'd sent 2 large side units. I phoned they said oh sorry but the wardrobes are now out of date so we have to refund you but it takes 10 working days but they would collect the next day.
driver knocked said 'here to pick up a side board' I let him in and told him it was actually 2 but he shrugged and said 'I won't tell if u don't' then walked out with just the 1 sideboard.
I left the second boxed up for 5 weeks waiting for some1 to contact me about it but after chasing my refund because their 'systems kept crashing' for the 3 weeks after it was due I said fuck it & put it together.
if they contact me in the next 4 years I'll happily pay but that's as far as it goes

LadyDeadpool · 12/12/2017 16:36

Basic definition of theft. (1)A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it

So planning on keeping the item and not informing the company would be the intention of theft.
