I don't understand the hype about Yorkshire?

Is it just me to be fed up with continuous hype about Yorkshire?

TV programmes devoted to the county etc etc. I spent some time up there recently and feel the South West, where I'm from, has far more to offer.

Did nobody watch Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax, Ackley Bridge? All dramas set in Halifax just last year.

Also Fat friends, Heartbeat, Downton Abbey, All Creatures Great and Small, Last of the Summer Wine, Open All hours, Where the Heart Is...etc.

Educating Yorkshire was by far the best of the Educating series as well- such characters!

In addition, 'Gentleman Jack' is currently being planned as a new series for next year and will be dram by Yorkshire playwright Sally Wainright based on the life of the famous Lesbian owner of Shibden Hall near Halifax, Anne Lister.

Film makers are clambering to film in Yorkshire which is maybe where the OP is seeing all the 'hype'.

Yorkshire people are the most proud people I know

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/12/2017 22:02

It's lovely, yes ... and if you look at it really hard, squinting a bit and in the right light, you'll find it's almost as lovely as Derbyshire Grin Grin

StarWarsFanatic · 08/12/2017 22:03

I am the only one wondering if the OP is a secret Yorkshire lover and knew they would get this response?

doctorcuntybollocks · 08/12/2017 22:04

Even as a Yorkshirewoman I have to admit that Derbyshire is lovely, especially the White Peak.

Viviennemary · 08/12/2017 22:05

Well Bettys tearoom is nice. Only been once though.

PumpkinSquash · 08/12/2017 22:05

And all that’s coming from a Lancashire lassie

See! Even the Lancastrians love us! Grin
Anyone else play at "booing" the Red Rose when you drive out of Yorkshire, and cheering the White one on the drive back in?
No? Just us?! Oh. Grin

EB123 · 08/12/2017 22:09

I will have to play that one with the kids Pumpkin. We try to be the first to spot Emley Moor Mast.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/12/2017 22:09

I have never seen any TV programmes about Yorkshire Confused

Nor seen any 'hype' Confused

LaurieFairyCake · 08/12/2017 22:11

Never seen any of that list apart from Downton (where the actual house is down near me so I've never thought of Downton as 'Yorkshire')

taybert · 08/12/2017 22:11

EB123 you’ve just reminded me of childhood visits to see my Gran in Barnsley!

AhWoof · 08/12/2017 22:13

When I lived in Leeds the Yorkshire Tourist Board rebranded as ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’ and made a huge drive to promote Yorkshire as a tourist destination to a new audience. I think they’ve been pretty successful e.g. getting the Tour de France. I’m in the south now but I miss Yorkshire and especially Leeds. The Yorkshire Dales are stunning too.

We can see Emley Moor Mast from our house on a clear day and lit up red at night on the horizon!

goodbyeeee · 08/12/2017 22:15

Hmmmm, I was brought up in Devon. Couldn't wait to escape and would never live there again. Horses for wotzits etc...

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 08/12/2017 22:16

Happy valley - never heard of it
Last tango in Halifax - nope never watched it
Ackley bridge - that's that school programme that's a bit like Waterloo road - no never watched it.
Fat friends nope never
Heartbeat well it's been about a million years since it's been on and actually no I can't remember watching a single episode
Downton - purposely avoided!

See clearly not hyped because I and quite a few other people I'm pretty sure will never have watched any of these programmes

If you don't like something err turn it off!

Willdoublecheck · 08/12/2017 22:16

Also re: the points about how big it is: 'tis true. We actually have a larger population than the whole of Scotland! Seriously!

RippleEffects · 08/12/2017 22:16

But it's not either or. Both can be brilliant places in their own right. I've lived a few years in both, now in neither, and love them for their own strengths.

sagamartha · 08/12/2017 22:17

I have never seen any TV programmes about Yorkshire

There's a few. And some great films as well.

Brassed Off
The Full Monty
Heartbeat
Last of the Summer Wine
All creatures great and small

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/12/2017 22:18

We also have the best fish and chips in the UK, everywhere else is so disappointing in comparison that I've vowed to only have fish and chips in Yorkshire.

perfectstorm · 08/12/2017 22:19

There are a lot of great places in the country. I live in the Cotswolds, was educated in East Anglia for university and Yorkshire for school, but spent my primary years in London and my family home after that was the Marches. All of them are stunning. So are the Lakes, and Scotland, and we visit the Isle of Wight regularly because it's idyllic for kids. Oh, and Devon.

Don't think it needs to be a competition? They're all equally fantastic (and awful, in parts - Doncaster's in Yorkshire, after all). Though I wish we had a branch of Bettys down here, have to confess.

perfectstorm · 08/12/2017 22:20

There's a brilliant chippie in York I know, but a place in Cheltenham has won endless awards for theirs; national ones. It's amazing. I think it's local knowledge wot does it, not geography.

Ecclesiastes · 08/12/2017 22:21

And yet Devon is rammed with northerners of all types who've moved here for a better quality of life. We're having to concrete over our fields to accommodate the northern diaspora.

Just saying.

DiegoMadonna · 08/12/2017 22:22

I'm from the SE and have literally never heard a single person "hype up" Yorkshire.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/12/2017 22:24

Sorry, but I honestly can't go along with the fish & chip one ... the best fish and chips on the planet come from the place below. Just go and see if I'm not right Smile

I think going the full Trevor Jardache is a little extreme. Shock

Bluntness100 · 08/12/2017 22:27

I’ve genuinely never seen any hype about Yorkshire other than the tea.

Places I see hyped are places like, London, Edinburgh. Devon, Cornwall, etc. I’ve never, heard of any going for a long weekend in Yorkshire unless it was to see family.

I think if Yorkshire’s ever spoken about it’s for the farming or the like, or as said Yorkshire tea? What are you watching or reading that not only do you feel,it’s hyped but overly so? 🤫
