I don't understand the hype about Yorkshire?

Is it just me to be fed up with continuous hype about Yorkshire?

TV programmes devoted to the county etc etc. I spent some time up there recently and feel the South West, where I'm from, has far more to offer.

old Thankyou. I do indeed. I declare myself Official Woman of All Things Yorkshirey

NoParticularPattern · 08/12/2017 21:05

Considering Yorkshire is so massive it is actually split into 4 bits, I’m not sure you can generalise.

Anyway you’re wrong. I’ve lived all over the south west and I’m from North Yorkshire. Whilst it might not be as close to London as the SW, I don’t know a lot else I would want to be down there for. Certainly not the house prices!

Oysterbabe · 08/12/2017 21:05

What hype? I've literally never seen any.

HermionesRightHook · 08/12/2017 21:07

*I want to get shagged by a Yorkshireman.

Just say 'ey up cock' to a lively looking one*

Can confirm.

StarWarsFanatic · 08/12/2017 21:08

If I am not interested in a TV show I don't watch it. You have the same choice.

I am sorry you lack appreciation for such a beautiful county. I am also sorry that the tourist board for where you are from lacks the initiative/resources/things to actually brag about/etc. to be able to encourage visitors to your area.

P.S. I am not from Yorkshire but I am most definitely from the north and in my experience it is a far friendlier place which is why I don't like to go down south unless I have to.

HermionesRightHook · 08/12/2017 21:09

Also, is it possible, just possible, that we actually live in a really nice country and most of it is pretty good? Which bit is the best is really a minor quibble.

I mean, it's Cumbria, obviously, but it's a premier league sort of competition.

juddyrockingcloggs · 08/12/2017 21:10

You 'spent some time' here? So you covered everywhere then? South, west, north, east riding? You must have spent more than 'some time' here if you did and feel you're equipped to comment on the offerings of the entire county!

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 08/12/2017 21:10

What tv programmes I think there was one, but not hype. I'm sort of from the south west too, well Cotswolds. Some of the country around here is sort of similar to the moors but, still Yorkshire is more diverse as it's three ridings.

I lived in Barnsley for a year whilst at uni can't remember much as I became ill and couldn't continue.

I'm weirdly obsessed with Yorkshire arts. I have no actual reason why other than coincidence.

My favourite Visual artist David Hockney
My favourite author Alan Bennett
This will put me totally but my favourite band is rock group from Scarborough.

Yep I love Yorkshire

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/12/2017 21:11

NoParticularPattern While I wouldn't know whether the southwest is geographically closer to London, it doesn't have a fast rail or road link.

Should anyone wish to, you can get the motorway door to door from Yorkshire to London or a train in under 2 hours.

Yorkshire's Tour de France Grand Depart was so spectacular, it spawned an entire multi stage professional cycle race, which is now up to 4 days and probably higher profile than the Tour of Britain.

To shag a Yorkshire man is easy.

Rock up to the nearest Yates's wine lodge buy a Yorkshire man a pint and say how Leeds UTD/Leeds Rhinos/Yorks cricket team are the best in the world Wink

I live in and love Yorkshire. Stunning in every way.

faceremovinghairscream · 08/12/2017 21:16

Thas talking utter tripe.

andylovesme · 08/12/2017 21:16

I think its just you...I have not come across any such hype.

Andylion · 08/12/2017 21:20

Yorkshire is so famous and has loads of TV programmes made about it.

I agree. As a Canadian, who became an Anglophile at a young age thanks to public television from both my country and the States, I hope I could be forgiven for thinking that England consisted of London and Yorkshire. Blush

Ask me to name the programmes now and I'll draw a blank, except for All Creature Great and Small.

Schlimbesserung · 08/12/2017 21:22

I've lived in Scotland since I was 15, but my grandfather was from Wakefield, so according to every Yorkshireman/woman I've ever met, this makes me Proper Yorkshire. I don't usually tell them that my mum is from Blackpool!
I like Lancashire, and I feel at home there. However, I'd never been to Yorkshire until about 5 years ago and once I did, I found it very difficult to leave. The scenery was indeed breathtaking and the people were lovely to us, but most of all I felt welcome and "at home". It also has Diggerland, which according to my kids is the best thing in the world, ever, with no question.

seafoodeatit · 08/12/2017 21:23

YABU! I've not seen any shows? I've seen very little of Yorkshire as it's a long drive away but I've loved the small parts we've seen.

Jellybean85 · 08/12/2017 21:27

I have to say I'm living I yorkshire atm and lovely as it is I can't say I've noticed any 'hype' , can you elaborate op??

Santasbigredbobblehat · 08/12/2017 21:30

The Yorkshire Wolds Way.
Yorkshire: A Year in the Wild.
On the Yorkshire Buses.
The Yorkshire Vet.

Some I can think of. I’m not criticising Yorkshire btw, just agreeing it’s more famous than other counties. Cornwall an exception maybe.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 08/12/2017 21:32

Good, I'm glad you feel like that, OP. We don't want your sort coming here.

user1467976192 · 08/12/2017 21:32

Oh for frig sake we like to catch a bus to holmfirth. Almondbury girl originally but my grandparents are from holmfirth

caitlinohara · 08/12/2017 21:34

I am from Yorkshire and now live in the South West. I still check the weather forecast for where I was born and am well jell when you lot get snow. I miss snow. Envy

Eltonjohnssyrup · 08/12/2017 21:35

caitlinohara · 08/12/2017 21:35
