I don't understand the hype about Yorkshire?

Is it just me to be fed up with continuous hype about Yorkshire?

TV programmes devoted to the county etc etc. I spent some time up there recently and feel the South West, where I'm from, has far more to offer.

Wow. I grow up in the south west and enjoy the sea etc however i love visiting yorkshire as it has a ruggy beauty. You ever visited the moors. York beats bath anyday on its beauty. You cant compare yorkshire to the southwest as both has good bits. We very lucky to have such lovely parts of the uk.

The Yorkshire Soap Company.

It's not called The South West Soap Company for a reason! GrinGrin

I can't wait to move!!

therealposieparker · 12/12/2017 09:12

I found Yorkshire to be the least friendly place I've ever lived.... closely followed by Wiltshire where I live now!

therealposieparker · 12/12/2017 09:12

I hasten to add I' ve lived elsewhere and the people were so much nicer, more welcoming and smily.

ReinettePompadour · 12/12/2017 13:46

Yorkshire to be the least friendly place I've ever lived try Staffordshire. Definitely not friendly at all. Anti anyone not 'born and bred' locally think so much of their little communities it doesn't occur to them that anyone else could see their town differently to them. I've lost count the number of times I've been told 'you won't understand as you're not from here' or 'you dont have history here so you dont see it how we do' type comments. I've lived here for almost 25 years yet I'm still an outsider trying to ruin their community with my 'outsider ideas' Hmm

The reasons given by a lot of people for preferring the south over the north

Literally the only thing I prefer about the South is the weather and slightly higher temperatures.

I love Yorkshire, I went to uni in York and dh is from Barnsley/ Doncaster. Likewise though I love the South West. When you're surrounded by Fens and Fen people pretty much anywhere is an improvement though.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 12/12/2017 13:53

I am an ex Londoner living in Yorkshire and find it really friendly. When I go down to London I sometimes forget I shouldn't chat to strangers and people think I'm mental!

VileyRose · 12/12/2017 13:58

I lived in SW and despised it! Now IN East Anglia and yes sea is grey ha ha.

Nothing beats Isle of Skye IMO

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 12/12/2017 16:12

Same Elton - I've become the slightly crazy person who talks to strangers in lifts.

Skittlesss · 12/12/2017 18:29

You stay down there, lass, it's cold up here.

Queenie64 · 12/12/2017 20:31

Wellysocksbox dearie...what the fuck has the Yorkshire Soap Company got to do with anything ??????? We DO know how to make soap in the South n'all. Mostly the anti-south with their arrogant comments

Vonklump · 12/12/2017 20:34

I think SW England is totally over rated although parts of it are nice.

mirialis · 13/12/2017 17:24

Blimey. Nowhere is "over-rated". If it doesn't suit you but suits other people, those other people haven't made a mistake, they simply have different preferences and/or means from you. I'm a big city dweller who loves to escape to a bit of "rugged" countryside but not a big fan of persistent rain/midges/cold temperatures (unless you can ski in them) - do not look at the people who live in the North of England/Scotland as being hard-done-by and have to laugh when they slate London, as if I might think my accident of birth and subsequent comfort-zone might make me think I'm superior.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 14/12/2017 09:16

Vonk I find the SW over rated too. Tourist areas are just populated with wankstain middle class blow ins who are really unfriendly and superior.

Helendee · 14/12/2017 09:22

I'm with you OP, went there once and that was enough!
I'm in the West Country and think it's the dog's whatsits. Wink

therealposieparker · 14/12/2017 09:42

The South West isn't just Cornwall.

therealposieparker · 14/12/2017 09:43

Reinette.... 25years?? Sounds like Switzerland where you can't be a citizen until your family have been there 21000 years!!

Paddingtonthebear · 14/12/2017 20:39

Yorkshire may have some beautiful landscapes and lovely cheap property but unfortunately it’s not doing very well on the education front, bottom in the country according to the news this week.

April229 · 14/12/2017 21:17

You’ve obviously been to the wrong parts of Yorkshire.

Which parts of SW do you genuinely think rival it?

frumpety · 15/12/2017 10:56

Paddington , and yet some of its State schools are ranked amongst the top 10 I believe .
