I don't understand the hype about Yorkshire?

Is it just me to be fed up with continuous hype about Yorkshire?

TV programmes devoted to the county etc etc. I spent some time up there recently and feel the South West, where I'm from, has far more to offer.

I hope I could be forgiven for thinking that England consisted of London and Yorkshire

London and Yorkshire do contain most of the landmass and population of England. Obviously Scotland and Wales are separate, but the non-Yorkshire, non-London bits of England are basically just our hinterlands anyway.... (and yep that includes Manchester GrinGrin)

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/12/2017 22:33

We're having to concrete over our fields to accommodate the northern diaspora

Nooooo, you mustn't do that; you need the sweet green grass which your rich red soil grows, so your cows can produce clotted cream without which life would be a bleak wasteland

I didn't think you could buy the real stuff any more, and then I discovered Riverford Dairy in Totnes. However I'm planning to firebomb them for not supplying anywhere in Derbyshire; it's a tragedy I tell you ... a tragedy

God I miss James Martin on a Saturday morning. I'll have to tune into Best Bites.

I wonder if he's keeping the weight off...

Domani · 08/12/2017 22:44

Fish and chips in Whitby are the best!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/12/2017 22:49

Fish and chips in Whitby are the best!

So I was told, so when visiting I ordered mine from a place by the harbour (while trying not to slobber with anticipation) and was served one of those disgusting frozen triangles of minced fish Shock

That was over twenty years ago now, and I've still not got over it ...

mirialis · 08/12/2017 22:53

OP - agree with you that Yorkshire is really hyped up (not least by people from Yorkshire who live in SE England) and am surprised everyone is seemingly unaware of this Confused Don't agree that I'm fed up of it though - even as a southerner - doesn't bother me at all.

Personally I think Yorkshire's got some very nice cities and lovely scenery but Scotland's got by far the best scenery in the UK and I love Glasgow and Edinburgh - bit gutted I didn't discover this earlier in life as definitely would have gone to uni there had I known.

LoneParenting101 · 08/12/2017 22:53

Lemony Thanks! Got that song in my head now! Whereabouts are you, Ilkley itself? Harrogate here!

FittonTower · 08/12/2017 22:53

Nah then mardy bum, don't get face on just because you're it from here. Not everyone can be born in Yorkshire, and we realise that is a tough pill to take be we are lovely and welcoming.
Unless you're from Lancashire. Then you can fook off 😉

JollyWankers · 08/12/2017 22:54

YANBU OP and this;
And also: never ask someone if they are from Yorkshire. If they are, they'll already have told you grin

Yorkshire Tea is BLENDED here in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Not grown here, obvs!

NowtAbout · 08/12/2017 23:04

The OP is blantantly a Yorkshire woman pretending to be from elsewhere. Classic behaviour.

We all know Lancashire rocks And Yorkshire's full of ...

mypussyiscalledCaramel · 08/12/2017 23:06

It's got more hills and has more snow in winter than norfolk

JollyWankers · 08/12/2017 23:07

I’ve genuinely never seen any hype about Yorkshire other than the tea.

Wouldn't quite call this hype right enough, but on Four In A Bed anyone from Yorkshire hammers home the point. Could be selective casting of course, but not once have I seen someone not going on and on about Yorkshire being god's own county. For perspective, I live near Glasgow and can't abide one person i know going on about Glesga being the best city in the world, also rubbish about Braveheart and all that shite. To me it's a mere accident of birth.

DigitalGhost · 08/12/2017 23:09

I love Yorkshire. I lived down south for 3 years and it sucked!.

Ceebs85 · 08/12/2017 23:11

What?!

Yorkshire is massive. Where did you go?

I'm another who has totally missed all this hype.0

JollyWankers · 08/12/2017 23:14

Happy valley - never heard of it

Eh? You're missing yersel, it's superb.

Sarahh2014 · 08/12/2017 23:20

South Yorkshire born and bred wouldn't want to live anywhere else

WeatherDependent · 08/12/2017 23:25

Yorkshire born and bred Wink

LockedOutOfMN · 08/12/2017 23:28

I am French and have lived only in London in the U.K. I now live in Spain. I love Yorkshire and think it's a really special place. My Spanish DH thinks the same and will apologetically add, "and London is so exciting" or similar after one of his frequent rhapsodies over the beauty of Yorkshire.

acquiescence · 08/12/2017 23:30

Ok....good for you that you don’t have to live in Yorkshire?!

I grew up in the South West and now live in South Yorkshire. I have a lovely house that would cost twice as much in the SW. It is more friendly and unspoilt. Each to their own.

laudanum · 08/12/2017 23:34

Nowt wrong wi Yorkshire. Calm thi sen and crack on Grin

StarWarsFanatic · 08/12/2017 23:42

Also, for the people mentioning films and TV shows, I think it is more a case of setting them somewhere outside of London that people recognise. If the same thread was I don't understand the hype about London I would understand.

Weedsnseeds1 · 08/12/2017 23:44

The UK in general is a beautifully scenic country.
I am south west born and bred, but my dad was from Rotherham, so I can make Yorkshire pudding to rival the best ( and before anyone starts Rotherham was in the South Riding, it's Yorkshire).
But fish and chips? I offer for your delectation

DiegoMadonna · 08/12/2017 23:55

So the hype about Yorkshire is all self-hype, basically? To be fair, I have noticed a weird Yorkshire sense of pride thing where people from there who leave feel the need to bring up where they're from as often as possible and go on about how it's the best place on Earth.

That's okay. I just smile and nod.

RainyDayBear · 09/12/2017 01:29

I know, all that lovely countryside, reasonable house prices and pubs everywhere...

I love it here.
