CF friend or AIBU?

We recently cleared out a family attic and found an antique object that is associated with a profession (think fireman's helmet/doctor's bag/judge's gavel etc). We looked it up online and saw they sell on eBay for between £150-350.

A friend of mine's FIL is retired from this profession and his hobby is researching its history. He has even self published books about it. He is a lovely man who I see about twice a year. He lost his wife a few months ago so he has been in my recent thoughts.

It is such a marvellous object (beautiful with history and craftsmanship) we decided we'd rather see it go to someone who would appreciate it, rather than sell it.

I asked my friend if her FIL would enjoy it. She responded that he would love it. When I dropped it off at her house, she and her husband said something about wrapping it up and making it their Christmas gift to their FIL. I was Hmm because it wasn't really from them, but whatever.

Today I saw on Facebook that she has put the object for sale online. Shock I messaged her a screen shot of the ad with the message '???' She wrote back 'hey, u gave it to us! I'm going to use the money to buy everyone a Chrissy present, not just [FIL]. We showed it to him and he enjoyed looking at it and taking snaps. Time for someone else to enjoy! :)'

I am so annoyed! She's correct that I gave it away- but I didn't give it to her to sell!! I feel like demanding that she either return the object to me or at least give me the money from the sale.

She's a good friend otherwise, but the kind of person who is always hunting for a bargain or a freebie. It was fun at uni but getting a bit tiresome today!!!

AIBU or is my friend a PITA?!

Just seen your update with her reply

Wow, just wow 😱

Don't waste your time peeing about with this one, this is a CF with a hide like a rhino. She has effectively stolen your property. A bit like if you sent it to her DFIL via the post & the delivery guy took a fancy to it as he thought it might be worth a few bob & so took it & sold it - theft, pure & simple!!

Demand the item back now, or you will not only be informing EBay that she is selling stolen goods, but you will also be contacting the police

What a self entitle bitch, gobsmacking

blueskyinmarch · 07/12/2017 07:34

She is a CF all right. Hope you get the item back.

gunsandbanjos · 07/12/2017 07:36

I’d report it to eBay too and cut all ties with this money grabbing lunatic.

ferrier · 07/12/2017 07:36

Btw - if the original conversation about who the 'hammer' was for by text make sure to screenshot that also.

Cookiesandcake · 07/12/2017 07:37

Omg go round there and get it back off her. She was in possession of it she is not the owner, she has no rights to sell it, that's beyond cheeky

ferrier · 07/12/2017 07:37

*hammer was for was by text

angieloumc · 07/12/2017 07:39

Wow....she's unbelievable. I hope you get it back; I wouldn't even give it to her FIL now as down the line she'll be getting it off him and selling it.

PavlovaPlease · 07/12/2017 07:40

The friendship is over regardless. What an utter twat she is. Report the Facebook one to the group's admin if you haven't already. And post the eBay link here to derail the sale.

makeitpink · 07/12/2017 07:40

Definite CF. Eagerly awaiting next OP post. I hope you get this resolved.

Definitelybreport to fb and eBay Shock
If someone gave me something for my mother, I would not sell it.

SpentTheDayInBed · 07/12/2017 07:46

My blood is boiling on your behalf. You won't ruin your ebay feedback if you end an auction early due to a problem. I think one of the options is that you have lost/no longer have the item.

So cheeky. I would consider that friendship over now.

MrMeSeeks · 07/12/2017 07:46

Id be saying she can cancel the auction or expect a visit from the police.
Contact ebay, state the item is not hers.
Tell her you'll also be doing that unless she cancels the auction.
Stop the nice messages, she's not a nice person!!!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 07/12/2017 07:47

I would not mention a solicitor thiygh - the amount is too low.
You could mention small claims court - what a ridiculous situation.

ahatlikeprincessmarina · 07/12/2017 07:47

What a CF –she's effectively trying to get you to fund all her Christmas shopping! Make sure you get it back!

Giraffesarequitetall · 07/12/2017 07:48

😮 wow. She is a CF indeed.

I’d reply ‘ it’s not yours to sell and it’s clearly not junk as you are asking £340 for it!!!! To be honest I don’t care about your feedback rating, it is not yours to sell. Please get it back to me by tomorrow/whenever.”

LaughingLlama · 07/12/2017 07:49

Omg - what a cheeky fucker!

You need to be blatantly blunt now.

What an absolute cow your "friend" is. She has no embarrassment or shame.

I would demand it back and fuck the friendship- she does not sound the type if person I would want to be friends with!

LaughingLlama · 07/12/2017 07:50

Oh and yes why not link this thread to her Facebook!

She needs to know what C.F. she is!

I think at this stage you need to forget about the fil getting the item. You don’t have any contact details so you have no way of knowing that she will even give it to him. Your objective now is to get it back and sell it yourself.
Go to her door, as others have said just turn up , don’t give her the opportunity to say she’s not in etc.
There really is no end to some people’s cheek.

londonrach · 07/12/2017 07:53

Contact ebay and tell them cf is selling stolen goods.

FaithEverPresent · 07/12/2017 07:53

She is beyond cheeky and she knows it!
I would stop messaging and turn up at her house (preferably with back up) and refuse to leave until she gives it to you.

makingmiracles · 07/12/2017 07:54

I’d also be getting round to her house ASAP before auction on eBay ends and demanding the return of item, her excuse is nonsense all she has to do is go onto the auction page, select cancel auction and tick box that says item lost/no longer available!

As someone else said, she’s using your item to fund her Christmas shopping, what a cheek!

Aeroflotgirl · 07/12/2017 07:55

Very cheeky and awful. Ask for it back if FIL does not want it. I don't think you will see it again. Not a nice person.

FaithEverPresent · 07/12/2017 07:56

X-posts making. Great minds!
