Meghan and Harry don't look right together

I was in small shop earlier with only 4 of us in their. I am a regular customer.
I heard a member of staff who was serving another customer talking about Meghan and Harry and staff member said they don't really look right together and that she's not an English Rose like Kate Middleton. I was really shocked by this because 1) that people of my generation actually think like this (middle age) 2) that she admitted this view out loud knowing i could actually hear it (i'm not white). I was only 3 feet away.

AIBU to think that this was a racist comment and that most white people do not think like this ? Please restore my faith Mumsnet.

No, I think the context is pretty clear here.

People who aren't racist would have added another comment along the lines of 'Oh, but it doesn't matter that Meghan isn't an English Rose' or 'And I don't think they look right together because she is more attractive than he is' or whatever, in case their comment was interpreted as racist.

The OP was standing there at the time and wouldn't have posted on MN if the context had been different.

I can absolutely believe she didn't know who he was. An American friend said to me during a phone call the other day 'The Suits actress is marrying someone from the British royal family, it's all over the news here. Do you know who he is?'

People do comment on others looks but being mixed race seems to give many people the cheek of commenting directly to your face. I was born a few decades ago when it was quite unusual to be mixed race.

What I have found is that people from both sides of my heritage seem to want me for their own group. The comments are often but you look totally Father/Mothers heritage depending on what that persons heritage is.

Well I look like me actually. What I find incredibly rude is people guessing where I'm from

One thing about being a mixed race woman is how men are complete perverts for the whole exotic thing. I know women get harassed by men a regardless but it adds another dimension.

Being told your beautiful, exotic and pretty all the time turns you in to an object. They see only the mixed race thing.

Bungle99 the being light skinned in Asian societies means you haven't been out working in the fields. Being pale is an indication of being higher class. My Father was Chinese and my Mother English. My Father avoided being tanned at all costs.

@dangermouse7 , you realise "chav" is a racial slur? Comes from the Romany for child - "chavi" - and has come to be used pejoratively towards anyone considered "low class"

I think he’s about a 7. He looks like Bear Grylls would if he had the redhead complexion colouring (hair, skin, eye colour).

And she would be a 9, I suppose. I can see she is very symmetrical and nice looking, and I’m sure she is stunning in real life. But she isn’t a 10 as she’s just a bit too forgettable looking, there’s nothing really that makes her stand out imo.

Can't stand the royal family, money grabbing lot, and no i don't believe for one minute they bring tourists flocking here. I think we'd get more without them, as France does.

Humps Lying yes you’re right, I shouldn’t have done the numbers thing. I wa quoting someone earlier in the thread, who I thought was being really over the top about how unattractive Harry is. Defining him as “a 3” which just seemed so over the top, he’s a perfectly nice looking person. As is Megan Markle.

Chav I believe is origionally a romany gypsy affectionate term for a young lad (chavvy)
. But it the word was hyjacked with nasty connotations

How attractive/unattractive randomers on MN think they both are is irrelevant. The fact is they. Both look stunning to each other, are attracted to eachother (wether a 10 or 0 on either side) and love each other. It doesn’t matter how attractive they in the eyes of the rest of the world so this whole thread is rather pointless. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that....

Well you only have to look on social media to see that a lot of people share that stupid woman's view. But equally there are lovely threads and comments which are the complete opposite. Swings and roundabouts. I haven't read this whole thread so I don't know if you said anything to Miss Bonehead..but if you did she'd likely have come out with some convoluted crap to deny her racism. Like it or not Meghan is marrying into the Royal family so she and her Ilk will just have to put up with it won't they. Good.

Purely statistically either he or William is likely to divorce, and the stats are probably inaccurate given the pressures of being in the royal family. Look at his dad, aunt and uncles - 3 divorced out of 4.

On the other hand harry can probably have a lot more fun than William. Being 6th in line to the throne rather than 2nd = far less responsibility!

One "criticism" of Meghan Markle that makes no sense is that she is divorced. Harry's father, the heir to the throne, is divorced - after a fairly scandalous marriage breakdown played out in the public eye. So too, are his siblings Princess Anne and Prince Andrew. These days, divorce per se is no longer seen as a moral failing by the vast majority of people - criticising Meghan Markle for having been married before is like a throwback to a previous century.
