Ordering chips, AIBU?

The local Chinese takeaway does really good chips. Amazing ones. Got to know this when they sent me some by accident a few weeks ago.

So tonight, DH and I order a takeaway and having been ill all week and struggling through it at work, I fancied treating myself to some of those amazing chips as a side to my meal.

DH strongly objected on two grounds; that I won't eat them all and that its not right to have chips as a side to Chinese food. As I was doing the order online, I just ignored him and added the chips.

When the meal arrived he got really would up about the chips being there, going on and on about how it wasn't a right thing to order, how I was wasting food, how it was unhealthy etc.... He wouldn't let it go and made a huge issue of it.

He then said that I'm banned from ever ordering chips with a Chinese takeaway again. He's now sulking in another room.

I accept that it's not in any way traditional, but they're so good, I feel like sh*t and wanted some extra carbs as a treat. I don't do it every time I order Chinese food. Was his reaction OTT or AIBU about the chips?

WHAAAAT??? Who the fuck does your dh think he is telling you what you're not allowed to eat??? Tell him to stick his chinese take away up his bumhole and swivel!!! I hope this isn't what your relationship with him is like in general - him laying down the law and getting in an almighty huff when you dare to have a difference of opinion?

Stropping about a poxy bag of chips! He needs to get a fucking life if that's the only thing he's got to moan about. How pathetic.

If your dh reacted like that over this, there's something very wrong with him. Hmm

southboundagain · 30/11/2017 21:31

If you weren't supposed to order them, they wouldn't put them on the menu.

Hadenoughoftumble · 30/11/2017 21:31

So your dh actually kicked off over your food order? And banned you from ordering chips with your Chinese ever again?? Fuck that!

Our Chinese does a dish called salt n’ pepper chips which is chips fried with peppers and onions and a good dollop of msg. It is heavenly.

arethereanyleftatall · 30/11/2017 21:31

Of course people order chips with Chinese. Otherwise the Chinese wouldn't sell them.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 30/11/2017 21:31

Wait... people eat chinese food WITHOUT chips?? Not in Ireland they don't.

Wolfiefan · 30/11/2017 21:32

I couldn't give a shiny shit about whether you want chips with your Chinese takeaway.
One partner forbidding another to ever eat from a particular place as they don't approve of their choice? Bonkers as fuck, controlling and unacceptable. I hope he isn't such an outrageous arsehole the rest of the time.

dudsville · 30/11/2017 21:32

This is not about chips.

edwinbear · 30/11/2017 21:33

My Chinese order comprises a spring roll, chips, curry sauce and sweet and sour sauce. Not in the slightest authentic but I love it, and it's me eating it after all. It's not what DH chooses, but then I think tuna on pizza should be illegal and he loves it!

Agree with duds

MyDcAreMarvel · 30/11/2017 21:35

I don't think I have ever ordered just fried rice, always have half and half.

NoParticularPattern · 30/11/2017 21:35

Your DH sounds like a tosser. He can fuck off to the far side of fuck if he thinks telling you what you can and can’t eat is acceptable.

However you are unreasonable for making me want chips and chow mein. On one plate. Gah

ThisLittleKitty · 30/11/2017 21:37

I discovered salt and pepper chips from the Chinese the other day. Seriously amazing.

puddleduckmummy · 30/11/2017 21:38

Having Just this second sat down to a Chinese including chips, your DH is not only wronger than wrong but also very immature

AdalindSchade · 30/11/2017 21:39

It's not just peculiar it's controlling to the point of being abusive.

ArchchancellorsHat · 30/11/2017 21:41

I wish I had chips, right now. Especially Chinese chips.

BuzzKillington · 30/11/2017 21:41

I can't imagine having chips with chinese food. It would be like having roast potatoes with pizza, or yorkshire pudding with curry.

All a bit incongruous and lacking in etiquette.

However, this isn't about poor dining decorum. It's about weird abusive control, (if it's for real).

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/11/2017 21:42

LTB. Chinese chips are the best chips ever. I don't care what they do to them. Your DH is WRONG. Get chips every time and don't let him have any.

But they reheat fine, so any you don't eat, just eat the next day. I sometimes make mine into a chip omelette, which is not as weird as it sounds, because it's just like a Spanish tortilla.

Crabbo · 30/11/2017 21:43

Chinese takeaway is bugger all like ‘authentic’ Chinese food anyway so how chips can be the wrong side I don’t know - it’s all wrong! Still delicious though so yeah crack on and order what you like, your husbands an arse.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 30/11/2017 21:43

Having spent a month travelling around China, I ate plenty of chips. Not a trace of sweet and sour or anything else on a typical international "Chinese" menu. Typical local fayre included things like "beef and green peppers" which was literally that. No fancy sauces. (The chilli beansprouts, literally beansprouts briefly fried with lots of chilli was particularly memorable and not for great reasons)

As I understand it, what we think of as Chinese cuisine is more like wondering why British people don't eat melon balls, roast turkey, Brussels sprouts, Christmas pudding and brandy sauce every day.

So as well as being a knob, he's a misguided, incorrect knob Wink

Jux · 30/11/2017 21:43

Sulking is so unattractive.

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/11/2017 21:43

We always order mains, special fried rice, chips, prawn crackers, Spring roll.

Takeaways aren't meant to be healthy.
