Ordering chips, AIBU?

The local Chinese takeaway does really good chips. Amazing ones. Got to know this when they sent me some by accident a few weeks ago.

So tonight, DH and I order a takeaway and having been ill all week and struggling through it at work, I fancied treating myself to some of those amazing chips as a side to my meal.

DH strongly objected on two grounds; that I won't eat them all and that its not right to have chips as a side to Chinese food. As I was doing the order online, I just ignored him and added the chips.

When the meal arrived he got really would up about the chips being there, going on and on about how it wasn't a right thing to order, how I was wasting food, how it was unhealthy etc.... He wouldn't let it go and made a huge issue of it.

He then said that I'm banned from ever ordering chips with a Chinese takeaway again. He's now sulking in another room.

I accept that it's not in any way traditional, but they're so good, I feel like sh*t and wanted some extra carbs as a treat. I don't do it every time I order Chinese food. Was his reaction OTT or AIBU about the chips?

I doubt Chinese takeaway food is traditional Chinese food as they cook in China anyway so I don't see why chips can't go with it. Foods evolve. Our Chinese takeaway does chips with curry sauce, yum.

It just smacks of he thinks he's more sophisticated than you but if he had true class he wouldn't have made you feel bad.

What on earth!

The Chinese we use now is actually joined with a chippy! So we can order both at the same time!

Your DH would love to order Chinese with me... I only have chips, egg fried rice and prawn crackers! I bet he'd have a right moan about that haha!

mirime · 30/11/2017 21:24

Where we used to live the Chinese did sweet and sour chicken balls with chips. They were lush and you've made me really miss them.

YANBU and your DH is being an idiot.

amymel2016 · 30/11/2017 21:24

Sounds like a knob. Everyone knows Chinese chips are the best!

Puppymouse · 30/11/2017 21:24

Good job your DH doesn't have to eat with me is all I can say. Tell him to do one.

Binkybix · 30/11/2017 21:24

He’s being a dick, but I am amazed at the number of people who have chips with Chinese. I’m now wondering what I’m missing!!

Salt and chilli chips and chips, cheese and curry sauce are two of the best sellers at our local chinese so he’s clearly talking rubbish.

LagunaBubbles · 30/11/2017 21:25

I dislike rice so I always have chips from the Chinese, preferably in gravy.

I'm surprised at the quite a few people, including the op, who are treating this as a bit of light hearted banter.

It's just so weird to me. I wouldn't want to live like that. This is how such a conversation would go with me and my dh, who are I think, quite normal;
Person 1: 'I'm going to order chips with my Chinese.'
Person 2: 'Cool.'

Sorry, not a wind up. Wish it were.

Posted here as I was so incredulous about the whole incident. Also, to see if anyone else did order chips with Chinese. Clearly, I'm not alone there!

Chinese chips are better than chipshop chips!

TempusEejit · 30/11/2017 21:28

I'd think you were married to my exH if it weren't for the fact we had chips with a Chinese. He banned me from having sweetcorn or mange tout in the house., I kid you not! Unsurprisingly he was an abusive twat in many other ways but it started off with crap like this...

Topseyt · 30/11/2017 21:28

He is being an arse. Chinese chips are the greatest.

Someone like him trying to ban me from ordering something like that would make me all the more determined to order it anyway. Every time.

@londonbum

"Well, besides the fact that your DH is a huge twat who has picked a very peculiar hill to die on here”

This just made me cry with laughter.

Excellent thread, 10/10 op. Tell your DH he is very wrong, won't you Grin

You don't get chips with your Chinese? Shock

maddiemookins16mum · 30/11/2017 21:30

Chinese chips have long been the best thing ever.
