Ordering chips, AIBU?

The local Chinese takeaway does really good chips. Amazing ones. Got to know this when they sent me some by accident a few weeks ago.

So tonight, DH and I order a takeaway and having been ill all week and struggling through it at work, I fancied treating myself to some of those amazing chips as a side to my meal.

DH strongly objected on two grounds; that I won't eat them all and that its not right to have chips as a side to Chinese food. As I was doing the order online, I just ignored him and added the chips.

When the meal arrived he got really would up about the chips being there, going on and on about how it wasn't a right thing to order, how I was wasting food, how it was unhealthy etc.... He wouldn't let it go and made a huge issue of it.

He then said that I'm banned from ever ordering chips with a Chinese takeaway again. He's now sulking in another room.

I accept that it's not in any way traditional, but they're so good, I feel like sh*t and wanted some extra carbs as a treat. I don't do it every time I order Chinese food. Was his reaction OTT or AIBU about the chips?

Um chips unhealthy? What about the shedloads of MSG they ladle into your Chinese? Hmmm....

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 01/12/2017 21:58

Salt and pepper chips,yum

Chickoletta · 01/12/2017 22:08

Seriously worrying behaviour - not at all lighthearted in my opinion.

All our local chinese takeaways do a 3-in-1, chips (fried) rice and curry sauce. Some do a 4-in-1 same but with added mushrooms. You can also swap rice for noodles - think that costs a bit more.

Chinese chips are much nicer than chip shop chips imho.

Also your DH is being a right prat about this OP - I hope this is a one off rather than his usual behaviour.

Rudi44 · 01/12/2017 22:20

He sounds like a bully. And a sulky one at that. I would tell him it's none of his damn business what you order.

Lashalicious · 01/12/2017 22:20

This is bizarre. This is like something you’d see on a TV movie—wacko controlling husband telling his wife what she can eat, what foods “go together”, what to wear, to refresh her lipstick, etc. Op, this is not the 1950s Twilight Zone.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 01/12/2017 22:20

Chinese takeaways round here always offer 'half rice half chips' with meals

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 01/12/2017 22:27

This thread is weird.

If the OP had said that her DH told her not to wear a low-cut top, but she did, so he 'strongly objected', argued, sulked and then 'banned her' from wearing a low-cut top ever again, there wouldn't be posts about 'this is my favourite low-cut top,' with 'just tell him to just piss off' as an afterthought.

But because it's about chips with Chinese, the horrendous red-flag, controlling behaviour isn't registering somehow.

I get it - Chinese food can be very distracting Grin - but on MN, people find 'controlling behaviour' at the drop of a hat usually and rightly call it out.

It's there in flashing neon lights here, but kind of getting lost in chips and noodles...

Butterflyhulk · 01/12/2017 22:44

Haven't read the whole thread but we never order chinese without chips!!It's part if the meal imo, sorry but your OH sounds very childish or controlling!
Hope you feel better soon and at least enjoyed your chips.

CradleCrapNap · 01/12/2017 22:47

If he thinks a typical Chinese takeaway noodle dish can be classed as ‘healthy’ I will die of laughter. Enjoy your chips.

OnlyTheWelshCanCwtch · 01/12/2017 23:35

Is it multiple carbs he doesn't like?
I always order chips and poppadoms with Chinese

We had pizza chips and garlic bread tonight too!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 01/12/2017 23:38

The chips are a distraction. He’s telling her what she can, cannot eat.and in a huff
This really isn’t about chips,it’s about his behaviour and rage when she doesn’t acquiesce

chocoblock · 02/12/2017 00:12

Your hubby sounds like my ex.... And that is exactly why he is now my ex, how can anyone let a man dictate to them what they can and cannot eat, he needs bin bagging!

driveninsanebythehubby · 02/12/2017 01:38

Your husband is controlling. This is completely unacceptable behaviour.

MaddHugger I really want to know what Dangermouse was trying to say too!

Casschops · 02/12/2017 07:43

He is acting like a spoilt brat, needs to get a grip. Chinese food in takeaways although delicious is FULL of unhealthy sugars colouring and additives. Chips are the lesser of the two evils. Stick your feet up and have G and T as well.

Mammyloveswine · 02/12/2017 07:54

Where I live we often get a munchie box... a pizza box with egg fried rice, noodles, chicken balls, salt and chilli chicken, salt and chilli chips, spring rolls and curry sauce... actually craving Chinese at this time on a morning!

Back to the op tho... husband is being very controlling and this is ringing massive alarm bells. Is he controlling in other ways?

Daddystepdaddy · 02/12/2017 07:56

What a nob. I like to have a make with dw about some of her eating habits but I would never try and stop her from eating what she wanted. The point of a takeaway is to have some stress-free comfort food not to observe weird made-up conventions about what foods you can eat together.

Elllicam · 02/12/2017 08:03

Yanbu Chinese chips are great. I make a chip butty with satay sauce and bean sprouts. My husband wouldn’t eat it but doesn’t mind if I do.

SlimDogMillionaire · 02/12/2017 08:10

Yeah cos a chinese takeaway is just so healthy in itself! He sounds like an absolute misery.

Chips!

StilettosAreANoNo · 02/12/2017 08:17

Salt and pepper chips. I feel on the edge of a new culinary revelation. How have I missed these?!

I can’t even begin to imagine living with anyone who would get so wound up about another persons choice of takeaway. Poor opSad

bayseyan · 02/12/2017 08:20

Chinese curry is only good when poured over chips. You are right. He is SO wrong.

Grilledaubergines · 02/12/2017 08:22

He ‘banned’ you!???? Did you ban him from being a prick in return?

Always have chips to dip in the sweet and sour here. Thought it was the norm countrywide. And if I just want chinese chips on their own I always order a tub of curry sauce. Chinese curry sauce is the best.

Glowerglass · 02/12/2017 08:28

Your husband is being a dick. He can't ban you from ordering chips! Of all the things to take a huff about!

Unless he is pregnant, then he has an excuse.

fuzzyduck1 · 02/12/2017 08:33

Is he the sort of person who will only eat peas if there an even number of them on his plate?
