Ordering chips, AIBU?

The local Chinese takeaway does really good chips. Amazing ones. Got to know this when they sent me some by accident a few weeks ago.

So tonight, DH and I order a takeaway and having been ill all week and struggling through it at work, I fancied treating myself to some of those amazing chips as a side to my meal.

DH strongly objected on two grounds; that I won't eat them all and that its not right to have chips as a side to Chinese food. As I was doing the order online, I just ignored him and added the chips.

When the meal arrived he got really would up about the chips being there, going on and on about how it wasn't a right thing to order, how I was wasting food, how it was unhealthy etc.... He wouldn't let it go and made a huge issue of it.

He then said that I'm banned from ever ordering chips with a Chinese takeaway again. He's now sulking in another room.

I accept that it's not in any way traditional, but they're so good, I feel like sh*t and wanted some extra carbs as a treat. I don't do it every time I order Chinese food. Was his reaction OTT or AIBU about the chips?

Chinese chips are gorgeous! Your husband is a Dickhead.

When we order Chinese I only ever order noodles and curry sauce. Costs £3.70 and nothing else compares! I'm a cheap date 😂

Dashper · 01/12/2017 07:29

Is there going to be a surge in Chinese takeaway orders this weekend thanks to OPs DH? Grin

Welshwabbit · 01/12/2017 07:30

You should eat what you like with your takeaway. But HotelEuphoria if your kids only ate watery sauce, boiled rice and veg in Beijing, Shanghai and Xian thru we're eating in the wrong places. I still dream about the food I ate in those cities. Especially the dumplings. Mmmmmm....

Welshwabbit · 01/12/2017 07:31

they were not thru we're!

Hookeslaw · 01/12/2017 07:35

Is he controlling verging on abusive in any other ways?

We have chips with every takeaway even a curry!

SequinsOnEverything · 01/12/2017 07:35

Chips from the chinese are so much nicer than chips from the chip shop! Ignore your husband, he's an idiot.

Looneytune253 · 01/12/2017 07:36

We always order chips to share with our takeaway.

DurhamDurham · 01/12/2017 07:38

Our local Chinese takeaway does chips with onions, peppers and chilli. Nicest chips ever, sometimes we don’t even bother with the Chinese food and just get the chips Grin

He's clearly entered wanker territory.

Explain to him that he doesn't get to dictate what you eat. Loudly.

eggsandwich · 01/12/2017 07:51

I’d serve him chips with every meal I cook just to piss him off.

Pandakin · 01/12/2017 07:52

If DP tried to tell me what I could or could not eat he'd be sat on the doorstep eating his rapidly congealing rice while I stuffed my face with a sack full of the chips in the warm. Luckily DP is not a controlling fuckwit and also appreciates the joys of chips and sweet n sour sauce. He does risk life and limb trying to steal a chip from me sometimes but shouting JOEY DOESN'T SHARE FOOD fixes that. Grin

YANBU to enjoy the crispy golden goodness.
YABVVU if you don't order a bag next time. With the sweet and sour sauce to dip!

LunasSpectreSpecs · 01/12/2017 07:53

I would never order chips with Chinese or Indian food but you should be free to do what you like.

XiCi · 01/12/2017 07:53

How can you live with such a wanker? His behaviour is so far from normal. What concern is it of his what you choose to eat. The way he spoke to you is disgusting. Have you tried to talk to him about how ridiculous his reaction was?

As an aside from his general wankery, salt and pepper chips are to die for!!

labazs · 01/12/2017 07:57

sod him we always have chips with chinese who does he think he is dictating what you want to eat? im vegi and have some most strange eating trends but my dh just laughs and accepts it my normal chinese is onions in black bean sauce chips and prawn crackers

XiCi · 01/12/2017 07:57

HotelEuphoria your kids school must have absolutely scraped the barrel with the places they took them to eat in BJ, Shanghai and Xian, especially Beijing. I had the most amazing food the entire time I was there (couple of months). It really was heavenly, even the street food. My waistline really suffered on that trip!

Kitsharrington · 01/12/2017 08:00

I mean your husband sounds like a dick, but I secretly judge people who order chips with Chinese food Blush

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 01/12/2017 08:00

See now my DH loves the salt & chilli chips from the Chinese so I have to actually share them with him.
Your DH sounds an utter knob-unhealthy to have chips with your Chinese takeaway Grin

twattymctwatterson · 01/12/2017 08:16

Everyone's laughing op but this kind of behaviour isn't a one off is it?

Trills · 01/12/2017 08:24

DH can be very set in his ideas sometimes.

LTB

It'll only get worse from here

Anniegetyourgun · 01/12/2017 08:27

I got the impression Dangermouse was expressing disbelief in the veracity of the OP. So perish all troll hunters. It's not as if the premise is particularly unbelievable anyway.

Doesn't it depend what sort of meal you have, whether chips are a suitable side dish or not? For example I most often have duck, lamb or beef and there's nothing weird about chips with those, although tbf I usually have rice and noodles instead, just because that's the rarer treat for me. Some of each (rice, chips, noodles) isn't weird at all; indeed, I was told that Chinese meals are designed to be shared around. Wolfing down a whole portion of rice AND one of chips AND one of noodles, well, maybe the OP's DH would have a point about health. He still wouldn't have a point about laying the law down, though.

Toblernone · 01/12/2017 08:38

Our Chinese's chips are only mediocre and I'd still not let someone tell me I can't order half chips, half fried rice and sauce to dunk them in with my main!

tillytown · 01/12/2017 08:40

Now I want chips for breakfast
