Ordering chips, AIBU?

The local Chinese takeaway does really good chips. Amazing ones. Got to know this when they sent me some by accident a few weeks ago.

So tonight, DH and I order a takeaway and having been ill all week and struggling through it at work, I fancied treating myself to some of those amazing chips as a side to my meal.

DH strongly objected on two grounds; that I won't eat them all and that its not right to have chips as a side to Chinese food. As I was doing the order online, I just ignored him and added the chips.

When the meal arrived he got really would up about the chips being there, going on and on about how it wasn't a right thing to order, how I was wasting food, how it was unhealthy etc.... He wouldn't let it go and made a huge issue of it.

He then said that I'm banned from ever ordering chips with a Chinese takeaway again. He's now sulking in another room.

I accept that it's not in any way traditional, but they're so good, I feel like sh*t and wanted some extra carbs as a treat. I don't do it every time I order Chinese food. Was his reaction OTT or AIBU about the chips?

Unless he has a severe chip allergy that means he'll break out in boils if he's within four feet of one, he's a total and utter knob and I would be equally as childish and from now on order chips with every meal from now until the end of time. Who does he think he is?! "Banned" from ordering chips!!!! Okay love. Way to make sure we've got extra chips FOREVER

FeelingAggrieved · 01/12/2017 16:29

Why are you with him? No decent person would try to control your eating habits in such a petulant, aggressive way.

They're chips!!! Cheap and obviously unhealthy, what did he think you were aiming for when you ordered a takeaway?

stormnigel · 01/12/2017 18:43

Tell your dh to get to fuck. And eat a plate of chips whilst you do so.

Dizzywizz · 01/12/2017 18:50

It’s not up to him what you eat! And as an aside, my Dh is Chinese and always orders chips. And as pp said, Chinese takeaway food isn’t very authentic anyway, they have a different menu for Chinese people with more authentic dishes

ElephantsandTigers · 01/12/2017 19:16

OP? Are you okay?

Mulch · 01/12/2017 19:20

Who the fuck tries to be healthy ordering in chinese

InSearchOfAPear · 01/12/2017 20:55

I think having. You should listen and obey your husband more. You are a very naughty girl!

Kaykee · 01/12/2017 21:11

Bit weird, who is he to tell you that you can’t have chips with your meal.

Shame he’s ruined your evening after a crappy week, seems a bit childish to huff over just hope you enjoyed your dinner

Lunapopskitty · 01/12/2017 21:12

Next time try salt and chilli chips they are even more amazing!!!! A Chinese is not complete without them.

Protectingmydaughterfromfilth · 01/12/2017 21:14

No disrespect intended to any sufferers of this, but could henpossibly have a touch of Aspergers or ASD that you know of?? Very OTT. Very very strange

bellie710 · 01/12/2017 21:16

WTAF chips with chinese is normal he sounds like an absolute W*er!

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 01/12/2017 21:17

I order chips with a Chinese Grin. DP thinks I’m weird but it’s my dinner not his. I don’t eat them all as they send loads!

Protectingmydaughterfromfilth · 01/12/2017 21:18

DamnItall What is a spice bag??

BarbaraofSevillle · 01/12/2017 21:18

I am a wimp who found out the hard way that salt and pepper anything at the Chinese does not have black or white pepper on it like I thought, but hotter than the sun chilli pepper.

So I usually get Ha Moon Vermicelli, which is like Singapore noodles with no chilli and share a portion of chips with DP, who gets king prawn curry and fried rice too.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 01/12/2017 21:27

He then said that I'm banned from ever ordering chips with a Chinese takeaway again. He's now sulking in another room

This is nothing to do with chips with Chinese food. Seriously, that kind of reaction is so horrid and would be a massive red flag for me. I couldn't be married to someone who acted like this.

DH can be very set in his ideas sometimes

Is that a way of excusing unpleasant, controlling behaviour?

BackBoiler · 01/12/2017 21:31

Id order double chips next time and eat them straight out of the paper with my mouth.

I would also have uncontrollable laughter too - but im a child like that!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 01/12/2017 21:33

My local Chinese does Chips, and they’re sooo good.esp with curry sauce
He’s being a bit of a highly strung bully, all that harrumphing he’ll get an ulcer
And no he can’t tell you what you can and cannot eat.i trust you’ll no listen to him

Touchmybum · 01/12/2017 21:37

"Set in his ways" - he's a wanker!

Nobody tells me what to eat, not even my doctor!!

OP you have bigger issues than Chinese chips, I fear...

Whaley27 · 01/12/2017 21:43

Pitching a fit over chips?! I don’t think I’ve ever had a chinese without them! I usually do the triple carb - noodles, rice and chips! Hope you’re feeling better xx

ColonelJackONeil · 01/12/2017 21:44

My Dh can be a bit funny about his own food order from takeaways. Dd and I joke he is like Sheldon from BBT with his very exacting order. However he would never stop me from ordering what I liked within our budget.

Originalfoogirl · 01/12/2017 21:48

I had Chinese. I had chips with it. Because to me, beef and tomato just doesn’t go with rice. I also had a debate with them whether “tomato” should be included in the “no veg” request, but that’s a different question.

Whilst in there, someone came in for salt and pepper chicken with salt and pepper chips.

Someone else came in for Kung pow chicken with boiled rice and chips.

And the last guy wanted a portion of fried rice, portion of noodles, portion of chips and a curry sauce.

Small snapshot, but in ten minutes, 4 of 4 orders had chips.

He’s still a dick. Did he stop sulking?

echt · 01/12/2017 21:49

God, this thread has taken me back to the Chinese chippies of my northern childhood.

Oh, your DH is being an eejit, OP.

NameWithChange · 01/12/2017 21:50

Your next Chinese online order clearly needs to be an ENORMOUS portion of chips with a small side of Chinese.

Up yours bossy hubby.

ManicUnicorn · 01/12/2017 21:50

WTF. Chinese Chips are amazing! Though the ones from our local don't taste anywhere near as deleicous as they used to sadly, they are still good though.

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 01/12/2017 21:57

I’m sure you already know you’re married to a bellend, just remind him that he has not yet been promoted to the position of Food Nazi and that (if) you do the majority of the cooking he better behave or watch all his future meals very VERY carefully.
