To be devastated with my new carpet

Justalittlelemondrizzle · 27/11/2017 20:23

Had a new carpet fitted on my landing and stairs today. It looked darker in the shop than it looks on my stairs. So it's a mid/light grey. But it looks blue. I hate it. I'm devastated. We can't afford to buy another carpet so I was wondering if there was anything we could do to tone down the blueness. We have off white walls throughout and light oak laminate in the hall. It looks fine upstairs but on the actual stairs it looks hideous. Any ideas?

It looks fine and more grey than blue, as others have said.

bimbobaggins · 28/11/2017 19:15

In the last photo you have posted it definitely looks grey, it looks a few different shades as it’s coming down the stairs, that must be the lighting. It reminds me of a stepwedge on the grey scale
I love it. I’d give it a few days to get used to it. Definitely don’t start painting.

ThisLittleKitty · 28/11/2017 19:18

Surely getting laminate and paying for someone to fit it would cost just as much as replacing the carpet Confused

Heckneck · 28/11/2017 19:26

Prob a different batch? Have you checked with them? All the people moaning about the posters use of the word devastated need to get a grip tbf. A death and a carpet are hardly something you compare.

LightastheBreeze · 28/11/2017 19:29

It looks fine, could you maybe get a runner for the hall in a complimentary colour to the carpet to pull it together.

Our new lounge and dining room carpet looks a different colour to the sample but stuff generally looks different in a house because of the lighting and size. I wouldn’t do anything like repainting laminating or recarpeting to hurriedly though

@herethereandeverywhere

This post isn't about your dead friend. The world doesn't revolve around you. Get over yourself.

BackInTheRoom · 28/11/2017 19:45

Put up some funky art and you will start to focus on that? Tbh I prefer the stair colour, it looks less grey/bland.

chiaseeddisapointmentagain · 28/11/2017 19:47

I think it looks lovely OP. I hope it grows on you.

MinisterForMagic · 28/11/2017 20:30

It looks grey to me. But I love blue, it's my favourite colour.

Passmethecrisps · 28/11/2017 20:42

Gosh some people love a pile in.

The OP has spent time and money and is gutted. Emotions aren’t policed or handed out in batches to only the deserving.

Honestly OP I think the stairs looks lovely - very tasteful and, in my eyes, grey.

Lightbulbs can make a world of difference - take a look and you will be amazed what you can find

Emoconn · 28/11/2017 20:43

Looks grey to me too 🧐

stubbornstains · 28/11/2017 20:59

Woah! It's going to be a lot cheaper to repaint the walls of the stairs than get the laminate replaced! If I was you, I would paint the walls a slatey blue, and hang some pictures in natural wood frames to echo the colour of the laminate downstairs. Work with what you've got.

oldmums · 28/11/2017 21:05

looks grey to me, just warm up the walls with a different paint/ light bulb anyway if its like a normal house (mine)you will have stuff stacked up each stair soon anyways and wont see much of the carpet

Give it a few months and it will be dirty and look brown anyway Grin. Stair carpet always gets filthy no matter how hard you try to keep it clean.

JLo1979 · 28/11/2017 22:01

I had the exact same problem in my living room op. Had gorgeous grey walls and picked what I thought was a grey carpet. Had planned Black and red furnishings once fitted. Carpet arrived and fitted while we were at work. I came home to a light blue(very expensive wool) carpet that clashed with the grey walls. Ended up with a suite of furniture that we still give out about to this day and repainting the walls a bluey grey as the original grey walls clashed. After 2 years of giving out about this carpet that we look at every day which stained easily because of colour my hubby wholeheartedly agreed to a carpet change and we got a dark purple carpet which I still love 5 years on.

sunshine11 · 28/11/2017 22:27

What look are you going for? It looks like something at my office. I'd be devastated too. Best do you have accidental damage on your household insurance? I'd go for a monumental spillage and then claim for a brand new (nice) coloured carpet.

LittleRen · 28/11/2017 22:47

Did you take a sample home? We just ordered new carpet for our stairs/landing and the guy who came to measure brought us the sample so I could put it everywhere. If you did sample it at home you may have a case to say it’s not what you expected?

whyamievenamazeddotcom · 28/11/2017 23:58

hi I think the carpet looks really nice the key here is to bring out the grey Its what is described as a Hamptons blue grey carpet go on Pinterest and type in how to make a blue carpet look grey there's a really nice image result for blue and grey living room plus a blue bedroom decor that shows how use of grey accents brings out the grey in the carpet might be worth considering changing the paint colour so that it brings out different tones In the carpet maybe a light warm grey or a coastal or off white? hope you find a solution x

Paint your walls light grey to bring out the grey in the carpet. And experiment with different types of light bulbs - a "warmer" coloured bulb should make a difference.

It will fade a bit over time. I wouldn't risk ruining it entirely by treating it with anything to change the colour, especially if you can't afford to replace it if you make it worse.

TheProdigalRhubarb · 29/11/2017 09:30

I agree it looks blueish. I think it’s the orangey laminate that’s doing it. I sympathise - I had my window frames painted grey, and they ended up looking bright blue, probably because the house is red brick. I hated it, and got the whole lot repainted in off white. Unfortunately it also meant re-doing the undercoat too so it added an extra thousand squid to the renovation bill. I give greys a swerve now. It was a painful experience.
