To be devastated with my new carpet

Justalittlelemondrizzle · 27/11/2017 20:23

Had a new carpet fitted on my landing and stairs today. It looked darker in the shop than it looks on my stairs. So it's a mid/light grey. But it looks blue. I hate it. I'm devastated. We can't afford to buy another carpet so I was wondering if there was anything we could do to tone down the blueness. We have off white walls throughout and light oak laminate in the hall. It looks fine upstairs but on the actual stairs it looks hideous. Any ideas?

something like Rhino flooring rustic oak grey vinyl might work.

Honestly, new lightbulbs are probably the easiest way to completely alter the colour you see. You’ve probably got warm white bulbs. Try a cool white one instead.

Looks fine to me, but if you don't like it why not add a carpet runner to match the walls? Will give some contrast & reduce the blue area. Cheaper than changing laminate or walls!

viques · 28/11/2017 18:03

I think it looks really good and very chic. It's one of those colours that will change throughthe day as different light levels occur.

Mazkyn · 28/11/2017 18:10

Nothing wrong with a blue carpet, it looks lovely, grey is so.....well.....plain!

nemno · 28/11/2017 18:11

Just want to say that Dulux White Cotton is not really a warm white. It is a white very slightly tinted with green. Before you mix it you can see the green dollop in the paint. In a garden room for eg it really picks up the green from outside. I don't know whether this makes a difference to the perception of the carpet but wanted to point it out in case.

Smudge100 · 28/11/2017 18:11

A bulb with a rosey hue perhaps? Personally i think it looks lovely.

PippaPiper · 28/11/2017 18:15

In the last photo the carpet looked grey to me.

BackBoiler · 28/11/2017 18:16

I remember when I bought my first pair of sofas. I nearly cried because they looked so big. I had measured and I thought the space would be ok - as it turned out I was right - but at the side of my old sofas they looked huge!

I was 23 and had just had a baby so money was a little tight so I do understand how OP feels even if the word devastated may be a little strong.

OP it is that orangey looking laminate floor at the bottom of the stairs - replace that with a cooler tone to it and the carpet will look fine Smile

Moonyroony · 28/11/2017 18:18

I would double check the sample tbh. There is such a thing as batch difference, usually a shade or toe darker or lighter. As someone who orders lots of carpet (and leather) I have had to return deliveries because they did not match the sample I held in my sample book x

Obie4 · 28/11/2017 18:26

My husband is a fitter and often gets this comment. Different lights in store make carpets look a little different than expected.
I think it looks grey. Although I see your point as I think our lounge is lighter than I wanted.
I think the idea of adding grey accents is a good idea.
And the fitting is fine. But the fitter should have hoovered Wink

Obie4 · 28/11/2017 18:29

Oh yea and as MOONYROONY states. My husband also finds this problem in his sample books. And has had carpets delivered to be fitted a few times that are for customers, same carpet from same sample number but colours don't quite match.

berliozwooler · 28/11/2017 18:29

I'd have gone for a natural stone colour in that space.

MrMeSeeks · 28/11/2017 18:30

Blue to me

MyDcAreMarvel · 28/11/2017 18:35

Upstairs is brown, downstairs is grey.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 28/11/2017 18:39

It looks grey.

Geordie1944 · 28/11/2017 18:42

Seriously? you are devastated? by a stair carpet in the wrong shade of blue? How shallow and trivial are you?

TeoTorriateKonomamaiko · 28/11/2017 18:43

I think it looks lovely!

PompholyxOfUnknownOrigin · 28/11/2017 18:46

Don't be so nasty Geordie1944, it doesn't suit you.

manicmij · 28/11/2017 18:53

Looks grey in both pics. If okay upstairs it must be something to do with light. Perhaps more natural light down the bottom is making you think it's blue but really it looks grey.

Viviennemary · 28/11/2017 18:55

You'll get used to it. This happened to me once. Carpet looked fine in shop at home in our hall I thought I needed sunglasses it was so bright compared to the previous one. I'd give it a few weeks before you think about redecorating.

festivefucker · 28/11/2017 18:56

Looks grey to me , but it's the laminate that's making it look blue, the closer it gets to it the more blue it looks. Saw some nice grey laminate in b&q the other day wasn't too expensive I'll see if I can find link.

Greylilypad · 28/11/2017 18:58

What is the brand and actual name of the shade?

Christinayangstwistedsista · 28/11/2017 18:58

It will be fine, its just not quite what you expected, I bet you like it in a couple of days

Oh, ffs, if the op feels devastated then let her be, its not really the point of the thread is it??

festivefucker · 28/11/2017 18:59

Sorry phone not linking, if you type b&q grey laminate flooring a few come up x
