To be devastated with my new carpet

Justalittlelemondrizzle · 27/11/2017 20:23

Had a new carpet fitted on my landing and stairs today. It looked darker in the shop than it looks on my stairs. So it's a mid/light grey. But it looks blue. I hate it. I'm devastated. We can't afford to buy another carpet so I was wondering if there was anything we could do to tone down the blueness. We have off white walls throughout and light oak laminate in the hall. It looks fine upstairs but on the actual stairs it looks hideous. Any ideas?

I too think the base of the stairs/fitting looks poor.

verystressedmum · 28/11/2017 02:52

They’re both grey just different tones. The stairs are a bluer grey the landing is brown grey.
I think the stairs looks bluer because there’s more light down there whereas the landing will naturally be a darker space which will make the carpet different tones.
Might not be much you can do to be honest but try different bulbs and try make the downstairs hall darker maybe.
Get a trim for the bottom step.

Vitalogy · 28/11/2017 03:15

That's a good idea about a trim for the bottom step, it's not the carpet, it's the laminate.

CakesRUs · 28/11/2017 04:12

That looks dark grey to me,

YouThought · 28/11/2017 07:47

Dh won't repaint

Cant you repaint it yourself? 😋💪🏻

YouThought · 28/11/2017 07:57

Perhaps you could just paint one wall a stronger colour to detract from the carpet. How about a soft warm greeny grey.

Believeitornot · 28/11/2017 07:59

The contrast with the oak brings out the blue.... If you had a different hallway floor it might look different.

jazzandh · 28/11/2017 08:14

warm white LED strip lights alongside the stairs, to throw some light down and soften them.

You get rolls of the lights on a sticky back (my son has them all around his room and bed - they are quite easy to install).

NellGin · 28/11/2017 09:15

How does it look this morning OP? Hopefully more grey Smile fwiw the second photo looks brown to me.

Justalittlelemondrizzle · 28/11/2017 11:40

Not really. The phone doesn't pick the colour up exactly. This is the best photo I have. Slightly better in natural light but not by much. Still devastated..

Would a grey fabric lightshade over the lightbulb help? Not much use during daylight hours though. Or take the light bulb out completely Grin

Rebeccaslicker · 28/11/2017 11:55

I am sorry you don't like it OP - that latest picture looks really nice, honestly it does!

FizzyGreenWater · 28/11/2017 12:02

Yes why can't you paint the walls?

You have a blue grey there so white walls are not going to work to counteract that. I'd post on some home decor type sites but you might find that going over the walls with a yellow or green-white would change it. Or yes, bulb hue.

The finish of the laminate around the base of the stairs is AWFUL - that was the first thing that jumped out at me from your pics!!

Justalittlelemondrizzle · 28/11/2017 12:02

Thanks Rebecca. That's a good idea Annie. I may try that and some grey accessories. I don't think the floor helps. I may just live with it for a year and buy a new one. Annoying but it's a lesson learnt.
Pps have said daylight bulbs and creamy ones. Which one will tone down the blue do you all think?

Last pic is very nice!

This is a good read:

I really like the last picture too. It looks really warm and IMO tasteful.

NellGin · 28/11/2017 12:36

Still looks grey to me, sorry. I do think it looks nice though OP.

NellGin · 28/11/2017 12:49

If you really hate it in a few weeks time in your shoes I would repaint the walls. The white is quite stark and is probably making the carpet look blue to you. A stone colour would soften the colour of the carpet imo.

Firesuit · 28/11/2017 13:55

On my monitor it looks a perfectly nice grey.

I agree light colour could make a difference. Projection screens are sometimes grey, so grey can reflect any colour.

I changed my aquarium light a few months ago, from fluorescent tubes to LED. Initially I was very unimpressed with the different quality of the light. Then I noticed it had better colour quality at night. Now I've temporarily put the old light back as the new one needs to be replaced, and I can't believe that I put up with something so wrong for the previous 13 years. There's nothing wrong with that grey, you will get used to it.

SimpleCreature · 28/11/2017 14:47

Get some tunable LED bulbs like Philips Hue or LIFX - you'll be able to adjust their colour temperature to maximise your preferred colour of carpet :-)

flissfloss65 · 28/11/2017 14:52

Aside from colour, did the carpet fitter tidy up where the carpet meets your woods floor. It looks unfinished in the photo, a bit ragged.

Nikephorus · 28/11/2017 14:57

The carpet looks okay but I'd be getting the edge of the laminate at the base of the stairs sorted - the crookedness would drive me bonkers Grin

Bodicea · 28/11/2017 14:57

This happened with me. Carpet looked blue looking up the stairs. I had dark woodwork banisters and it looked wrong. I painted the woodwork white and painted the walls a pale v current grey and added white picture frames. Looks much better now.
But lesson learned a lot of greys have a blue hue in certain lights. Next time I am bringing a sample home first.

Bodicea · 28/11/2017 15:00

oh just realised your woodwork is already white. It doesn’t look that blue. I agree it’s the floor that doesnt quite work with it.
Could you use some sort to stain to tone down the warmth in the wood and make it look more ashy?
