To be devastated with my new carpet

Justalittlelemondrizzle · 27/11/2017 20:23

Had a new carpet fitted on my landing and stairs today. It looked darker in the shop than it looks on my stairs. So it's a mid/light grey. But it looks blue. I hate it. I'm devastated. We can't afford to buy another carpet so I was wondering if there was anything we could do to tone down the blueness. We have off white walls throughout and light oak laminate in the hall. It looks fine upstairs but on the actual stairs it looks hideous. Any ideas?

It’s lovely. And it’s grey not blue.Confused

fannyanddick · 27/11/2017 22:00

Have you spoken to the company and asked if they have any ideas/offcuts for the hall. They may try to help.

Thermostatpolice · 27/11/2017 22:01

The stairs look blue to me too. But I like it.

Do think that it might look greyer when the pile has been flattened a bit by wear?

Dahlietta · 27/11/2017 22:02

Looks grey to me too, but I appreciate it doesn't to you, so that may not help! In the first instance, I think you should try not to allow yourself to think about it too much until you have lived with it for two weeks. Set an alarm on your mobile for the date. In two weeks, I think you will be totally used to it, but if you aren't, then you can worry.

herethereandeverywhere · 27/11/2017 22:02

I suggest you go and sit on your 'devastating' carpet and write a list of all of the good things in your life. All the people with good health, the good relationships, the things that are going right, the things you are looking forwards to. Then think about what would happen if some or all of that was the opposite.

Then think about how devastating a carpet colour shade variation can actually be [FFS] Hmm

NatMatCat · 27/11/2017 22:05

I hate nearly everything I buy for the house once it's in.

Too much choice, too much pressure to get it right when you have to live with it for years. After a while I get used to it but I never love anything.

buckeejit · 27/11/2017 22:06

Yes it does look blue. But it doesn't look bad! I'm of the opinion that things never turn out how they seem in your head though.
Try the light bulbs or install some low wattage lamps on timers in the area instead of a 'big light'

Put up some art that pulls on the grey element rather than the blue & throw down a runner rug-dunelm have lots about £40

Also, have wine 😊

mumtoanangel · 27/11/2017 22:06

Im devastated my son died.devastated over a carpet is ridiculous

DillyDilly · 27/11/2017 22:06

Detract from the carpet - hang some interesting artwork or paintings on the wall going up the stairs. Maybe a new light-shade/fitting. The same with your hall.

YANBU to be gutted. YABU to be devastated. I fucked up when I got my home carpeted - the previous occupant had had everything so dark and jarring (think pink wall against orange wall with chequerboard cupboard door, electric pink glass and ACEEEED yellow carpet tiles) - that I went for completely vanilla magnolia paint & carpets. My request to the carpet firm was 'the cheapest carpet that won't make me actually want to vomit'. I chose a lovely light beige. Yeah, that went well with two lazy bastard DC who like a bedtime hot chocolate....

Agree with other posters about changing the lighting to give a different effect, or perhaps rugs/runners. Without knowing the layout of your house, mirrors could be good also, to reflect back the light so it's more as you expect. And I know how shit it is to feel disappointed about something you'd really looked forward to, and won't be able to change for quite a while. You'll get used to it, but it is a bit shit.

Crumbs2 · 27/11/2017 22:12

Oh dear. It's definitely green.

CoffeenoTea · 27/11/2017 22:14

It looks like underlay, are you sure its the carpet?

Crumbs2 · 27/11/2017 22:16

Goodness yes it's green underlay

BMW6 · 27/11/2017 22:18

I'm another who thinks the stairs look grey but upstairs hall brown!

RhiWrites · 27/11/2017 22:24

it’s not underlay. It’s the same carpet as the other pics.

This kind of thing happens to me and my SO all the time. Colours look different from what we expected. Sometimes we’re a bit disappointed but after a weeknight living with it we like the new fresh colour of carpet, walls, tiles etc.

Live with it for a week and come back and update us. I bet you’ll like it by then.

notacooldad · 27/11/2017 22:28

Just we re in excatly the same position as you but ours is virtually black.
I was left in charge of picking it and it looked fine on the roll. However the whole Hal, landing and stairs are done ad I can't stand it. It cost over £1,300 three years ago and every time I walk through the front door I hate it. There's nothing I can do because I'm not replacing it yet!

sparkleyes · 27/11/2017 22:29

People are being fucking horrible to the OP on this thread. OP it is perfectly reasonable to feel really upset that you have spent a massive amount of money on a carpet covering a large percentage of your home and not be completely happy with it.

Yes shit things happen in life it's not a competition.

OP the colour looks nice but try changing your light bulbs as others have said there is warm bright and bright white and others in between I'm sure it will grow on you and it doesn't look like underlay (cheeky fuckers)

NinonDeLenclos · 27/11/2017 22:31

I'm not getting the blue hate - does it really matter?*

*misses the point.

notacooldad · 27/11/2017 22:34

Actually OP, after my rant about my own carpet I forgot to add that yours is how I envisaged mine would look so what processed me to get something about 100 shades darker I will never know!

Ellie56 · 27/11/2017 22:36

Your first two pictures look blue and the third one looks grey, so is probably something to do with the lighting.

It's as bit late now but I always bring samples home from the shop and look at them at different times of the day, in natural light and artificial light. The difference can be amazing.

anothermalteserplease · 27/11/2017 22:38

Give it a few days and you’ll like it. It looks good.

Tatapie · 27/11/2017 22:39

I like the carpet but totally understand, this happened when I had the carpet on the stairs and landing done - looked totally bloomin different to the sample at the bottom of the stairs did! With hindsight it's obviously the light and I'm now over it - new clean carpet which looks smart whatever colour it is is a good thing!

stubbornstains · 27/11/2017 22:39

Well, if you painted the walls on the stairs a bluish tone, the carpet would definitely look less blue by comparison. If you like blue. Although it sounds like you don't!

Natural light is way more blue toned than artificial, so I'm guessing your stairs get more daylight than the upstairs rooms?

BertieBotts · 27/11/2017 22:42

It is a cooler grey downstairs and a warmer grey upstairs. I understand what you mean about blue.

I agree you need to look for warm white lighting, it will help. Both being energy saving doesn't mean that they are the same colour temperature. Also, choosing a warm white for the walls (closer to magnolia) should help bring out the warmer tones.

If you have no clue what I'm on about this may help:
