To Be Delighted for Harry and Meghan?

I know there are lots who have no time for the Royals but as a mother I'm delighted that Harry has found his match. I'm also quite thrilled that he's gone against the grain for his atypical princess! Think Diana would have been proud to see him follow his heart.

What does privilege and wealth have to do with it?

Everything. No one has a particular opinion on a happy couple getting engaged, good for them, very Disney - may they live happily ever after! It’s the fact that the poor and underprivileged are not only (very likely) expected to pay for their special day when the country and it’s people are seriously struggling, we’re all meant to be somehow grateful for their happy news and clap like trained seals in awe of their Disneyesque lives Hmm.

If they announced they were/had already eloped, paying for it themselves and had no plans on turning the whole thing into a pantomime (like Kate and Wills have since day one), even the most staunch republican would have little to say but ‘how nice for them’.

Ivehadtonamechangeforthis · 27/11/2017 21:35

I have to agree with you Lulu.

formerbabe · 27/11/2017 21:35

I am saying that any talentless celeb who earns a living sellng their image and body through publicity and social media can now become a member of the British Royal family

What rubbish. Meghan Markle is a successful actress. Would you have preferred Harry to get engaged to a Sloane Ranger who lives on family money?

StickThatInYourPipe · 27/11/2017 21:36

Does this mean she won’t be in suits anymore?

bluebell34567 · 27/11/2017 21:38

Very cute couple.
Congratulations and happiness to them.

LondonGirl83 · 27/11/2017 21:39

Comparing Mehgan to Kim Kardashian or Jordan makes no sense.... She is a successful actress not a social media celebrity

logicalmum · 27/11/2017 21:41

ignore the miserable royal haters
Maybe those "miserable haters" are fed up to the back teeth with all this ridiculous fuss over two people who are never going to have to worry about getting a home, the stresses of getting a job that pays enough, never have to worry about whether to eat or keep warm, never have to worry about whether they can afford a baby, get to see a doctor when they want one....the list is endless. Most women certainly wouldn't be able to give up their job ahead of their wedding.

They say most people are just two pay checks behind being homeless, God help you if you fall ill, this government has shown they couldn't care less. You'll have a long wait for any money.

So forgive anyone who isn't absolutely gushing over this forthcoming wedding, they might be thinking about more important things.

HadronCollider · 27/11/2017 21:43

Talentless?

WitchesHatRim · 27/11/2017 21:44

Does this mean she won’t be in suits anymore?

She quit a month ago. So about the time they got engaged.

LuluJakey1 · 27/11/2017 21:46

She is a D list actress in a D list programme. She has a public profile because she has had a huge PR operation selling her on social media and in magazines etc in quite revealng clothing with a promoted branded ‘lifestyle’. It is all a pretty empty facade.

Her commitment has been to self-promotion as a means of earnin* a living.

They may be very happy- I hope so but the holding of the Royal family as some sort of national representatives of our culture, traditions and all this curtseying and bowing - it needs to stop at this point. I would be very respectful to HM if I ever met her but I would consider I have done more for this country than Megan Markle and certainly wouldn’t have any interest in her. Nor should we be spending public money on her and maintaining her lifestyle. I think it should be a private wedding at their own expense, no publicity or fawning - he will be 6th in line to the throne soon and it is time he disappeared and lived at his own expense, paid for his own security and sank into the oblivion of the daughters of the Duke of Gloucester and earned his own living, along with Eugenie and Beatrice. No more bowing and curtseying to any of them.

SleepingStandingUp · 27/11/2017 21:48

Well technically they have to get one of the RF to fall in love with them and then depending on their distance to the throne get the Queens approval. Its not like just letting the commoners join the tennis club.

Kate was University educated and sat their being a good girl until he put a ring on it. Not good enough. Megan has a career. Not good enough. If it was an aristocrat then it would be seen as a marriage of convenience, just another rich person blah blah blah. It wouldn't be good enough. Is there anyone they can marry without someone bitching about it?

Battleax · 27/11/2017 21:48

At this point there is now no difference between them. When HM the Queen dies the country will move to becoming a Republic. It won’t happen overnight but the remnants of the RF will just be celeb figures rather than having any real national standing or role.

That's probably spot on.

You'd be hard pressed to find an actor who isn't on social media. She seems intelligent and interesting. It's not like Harry has announced he's engaged to someone from Love Island!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 27/11/2017 21:51

I think she is going to be the new people’s princess has her own career, worked in charitable interests long before Harry can along, very attractive, seems genuine and very charming also she is a feminist Grin

Far more interesting than Kate

logicalmum · 27/11/2017 21:52

Can't you be happy for a young man who has lived his life in the public gaze

You're making that sound like that must have been an ordeal for him. Far from it, rather like celebrities who not only live their lives under the gaze they positively crave it, so too do the young royals.

The public attention and adoration go hand in hand with the wealth and privilege. It was sad the princes lost their mother early but i'm sure they love their "prince status" and everything that goes with it.

It's other young men i feel sorry for, those who are struggling to find work and a roof over their head. Not two very well cosseted princes.

StickThatInYourPipe · 27/11/2017 21:53

WitchesHatRim

Oh no! She was great in that! Why couldn’t she keep her job?

Battleax · 27/11/2017 21:53

Yes, you can't deny that.

formerbabe · 27/11/2017 21:55

It was sad the princes lost their mother early but

No need for the but is there?

Creambun2 · 27/11/2017 21:57

Yeah she is such a feminist, gives up her career as her DP and his family want her to do that.

Delighted for them, they seem very much in love which IS a nice change from all the horror in the news.

I love Suits

blueskypink · 27/11/2017 21:59

rather like celebrities who not only live their lives under the gaze they positively crave it, so too do the young royals.

And you know that because ......?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 27/11/2017 21:59

oh so a women has to stay in her job to be a feminist

Right

LondonGirl83 · 27/11/2017 22:00

I don't think she is generally thought of as a D-list celebrity. We'll just have to agree to disagree
