AIBU- at lunch, with both children and their dad, who’s not around during the week. 2 year old says she doesn’t like the fact he’s got squash and she’s got water. He turns round, completely genuinely (!), and says “oh, shall I throw mine down the sink?”!!!! She says yes, and I interupted just before he got up from his chair to throw away his drink, because the 2 year old didn’t like him having it!!!!!! She’s 2! We are grown ups! We are parents that are supposed to set boundaries and teach them to deal with life!! AIBU??!!

What a random response from him! Surely, "would you prefer some squash?" Or "well thats what you asked for" or whatever would be better.

Ttbb · 25/11/2017 19:14

Surely you also shouldn't be setting bad examples though? Maybe he just got embarrassed about the squash drinking.

TheStoic · 25/11/2017 19:22

That would’ve been a dangerous precedent to set!

But good on your daughter for standing up for equality. Grin

Yanbu. My 2 year old knows she doesn't have the same drinks as her parents and I think that's pretty normal.

Glumglowworm · 25/11/2017 19:37

I don't think I'd drink squash while my child had water or would just put it in a mug and claim it was tea or coffee like I do with cola at Brownie holiday

I wouldn't have thrown out the squash (because I hate waste) but I wouldn't be upset by the principle of him questioning if it was fair or not.

BuzzKillington · 25/11/2017 19:40

What adult drinks squash?

buckeejit · 25/11/2017 19:42

What's the rule? At ours its water with meals unless special occasion so we all try to stick to this. I'd have said oh yeah & got some water

voddiekeepsmesane · 25/11/2017 19:51

I as an adult have alcoholic drinks sometimes am I to throw those down the sink because my child thinks it unfair. YANBU adults often have things that children do not ....wow he needs to get a grip IMO

LynetteScavo · 25/11/2017 19:53

Surely the normal response in front of a 2 yo is to say "Daddy will have water then" get a glass of water and drink the squash when she's not looking.

monkeyfacegrace · 25/11/2017 19:58

Water is totally minging so squash all the time here (and I'm an actual, real life adult) Grin

MrsKoala · 25/11/2017 20:01

Ha Buzz, i was about to say the same thing. I think adults who drink squash are odd!

pictish · 25/11/2017 20:04

What the hell is wrong with adults drinking squash?? Confused

MrsKoala · 25/11/2017 20:04

I also think it's odd not to let a 2 year old have squash with a meal.

I have a wine with dinner but it isn't a drink the kids like so i don't, think it's the same. I wouldn't have a coke and not let the kids have one. But i also think adults drinking coke is weird too Grin

asmuchuseasachocolatefireguard · 25/11/2017 20:05

I don't drink alcohol. Not every one does. We have well watered down squash with meals in a jug on the table - one of blackcurrant and one of orange. I never realised it was odd?

Viviennemary · 25/11/2017 20:05

I think he dealt with it in a reasonable way. I am presuming you don't want your DD to drink squash otherwise why couldn't she have had squash as well. But really it's a non event.

MrsKoala · 25/11/2017 20:06

Just a babyish drink really. It's only something i've ever seen kids drink and i certainly wouldn't want sugary nastiness with savoury food.

asmuchuseasachocolatefireguard · 25/11/2017 20:07

@MrsKoala we have three jugs on the table - water, blackcurrant and orange. They're well watered down. I wouldn't want all that empty sugar
and the empty calories in the form of wine, especially not if anyone had to drive later.

GwenStaceyRocks · 25/11/2017 20:08

Is this really about the fact he's not around during the week so you struggle with him undermining your routines when he is around? I can sympathise with that even though I don't care about the squashgate

MrsKoala · 25/11/2017 20:09

Really the taste of blackcurrant squash with Coq au vin or Shepherds pie? Sounds vom inducing. If i don't have wine with food i just have water. Anything else must makes it a weird sweet and savoury combo.

RoganJosh · 25/11/2017 20:11

We don’t have squash with meals either. We do drink alcohol, but since having children it’s normally not with meals as we eat early with them. So it’s not an alcohol or squash decision necessarily.

asmuchuseasachocolatefireguard · 25/11/2017 20:11

@MrsKoala I personally would have water with Shepherds Pie. The children might have squash or milk. I wouldn't make Coq au Vin because ... I don't drink
