AIBU- at lunch, with both children and their dad, who’s not around during the week. 2 year old says she doesn’t like the fact he’s got squash and she’s got water. He turns round, completely genuinely (!), and says “oh, shall I throw mine down the sink?”!!!! She says yes, and I interupted just before he got up from his chair to throw away his drink, because the 2 year old didn’t like him having it!!!!!! She’s 2! We are grown ups! We are parents that are supposed to set boundaries and teach them to deal with life!! AIBU??!!

Until I came to the UK I thought cordial was just something brought out at young children's birthday parties, as a pretty crappy compromise between water and soda. I still don't understand why it's treated like an everyday drink here (just drink water!) or why on earth an adult would want it.

katiethekittenfreddythefrog · 25/11/2017 22:07

My DD is 20 months so not far off 2 and she doesn't have squash. She's never had it so she doesn't know it's an option, she has water or milk.

Even at her age she understands that she cant have my drink - tea is hot etc. You don't have to give children everything that adults have, in this situation I'd have said 'that's Daddy's grown up drink' and moved the conversation on. Is he going to chuck a coffee away, or a beer?

I don't drink squash myself but DH (35) drinks a bottle a week! Loves the stuff. Blergh.

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 25/11/2017 22:15

I’m drinking squash as I read this thread.

AppleKatie · 25/11/2017 22:18

This thread is also making me want a nice cold glass of orange squash.

The anti squash pearl clutching is actually hilarious.

You know it's just a drink right? And better for you than coke etc imho.

ItsNachoCheese · 25/11/2017 22:20

I have diluting juice to drink when i go out for a meal or to the pub as i dont drink alcohol. Im not weird in any way

WorraLiberty · 25/11/2017 22:26

I know this is The land of the fairies Mumsnet

But adults who drink squash are weird now?? Confused

Seriously, this forum gets more bizarre by the minute. That's why I love it Grin

BestZebbie · 25/11/2017 22:26

I'd go against the grain here and say that the situation in the OP would be fine with me (though to avoid setting an example about wasting food I'd probably suggest swigging it and replacing with water than pouring it out). I presume that the adult made a value judgement about the relative merits of half a cup of squash, "giving in", and letting his daughter feel heard - with a glass of vintage wine the relative merits would probably be different and so the daughter would get a "grownup drinks" explanation instead, which doesn't really work for squash.Squash is more of a "I'm allowed that, but not now, so why should he?" situation, whereas wine would be a "I'm not allowed that anyway".

I think it is actually quite good to allow children to point out inequalities or inconsistencies and be heard on occasion, this situation where the impact was a cup of squash seems like a good time to do that whereas "why does Daddy get to stay up later than me" is one that you'd enforce as a boundary, for example.

I don't like sushi Confused

I can't imagine telling people to 'just eat cod!'

I totally understand why on earth another adult who is not me, would want to eat something I personally don't like...

juddyrockingcloggs · 25/11/2017 22:30

Squash drinker here! Smile

As are most of the adults in mine and DHs family!

Ellapaella · 25/11/2017 22:36

I love squash, water is boring.
Children don’t get to do/have all the things that grown ups get to do. They have to learn to deal with it.

Etymology23 · 25/11/2017 22:42

I too am an adult who drinks squash (but not usually with a meal). I also drink it both hot and cold.

I get bored of almost all foods and drinks (and books, games, work...) if I eat/drink(/insert verb here) them often enough. I switch tea brand regularly, and the squash I drink, the cheeses I eat, my breakfast cereal, my yoghurt. I also get bored of water, if I drink it all the time.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 25/11/2017 22:46

I drink “squash” but I think we call it diluting juice. Cranberry is my favourite kind. Apart from that I like irn bru every now and again. Don’t drink any hot drinks. Ice tea & wate4 too.

I think people should just drink whatever the fuck they want 😂

1DAD2KIDS · 25/11/2017 22:54

I must admit to me that sounds a very bizarre reaction to the situation. I cant think of any behavioural or educational value that reaction has given your daughter.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 25/11/2017 22:56

I drink squash. I can't understand why on earth anyone would want to drink the bitter disgustingness that is tea or coffee, but I seem to have a minority opinion on that. I drink quite a lot of water, but just water and the occasional alcoholic drink of an evening would make for a dull life Wink

I wouldn't throw away my drink, but then I found it easier to drink the same that I was prepared to offer my DCs, or offer a taste.
I can remember faking raspberry leaf tea to avoid my then 2 year old melting down when in the last weeks of pregnancy. I think I gave him warm ribena and pretended it was the same Grin

Jaimx86 · 25/11/2017 23:03

I drink 4+ literally water day and squash at a weekend. I'm in my 30s with a 'healthy' bmi and have never had a filling. What's wrong with the ocassional glass of juice?

asmuchuseasachocolatefireguard · 25/11/2017 23:05

@1DAD2KIDS does an adult reaction to a child have to have a behavioural or educational value?

wrenika · 25/11/2017 23:09

This 'adults don't drink squash' thing is a bit weird! But then, I think the 'my children only get water' thing is weird. What's wrong with having a weak squash instead of a water? I don't ever remember having plain water as a kid, not at home anyway. It was always squash.
And I still drink squash when I'm in 'water drinking mode' cause it's nicer than plain water.

ConfusedLivingDoll · 25/11/2017 23:18

I've drunk diet cola instead of water since 2000ish when I moved away from home. I almost never drink water, as I don't like it. The great thing about being an adult is that you can drink what you want. Squash, wine, coke, lemonade, whisky, chocolate milk, beer, coffee, chai, whatever! However, as children can't and should not make choices that can impact on their health, it's the parent's job to be on the same page re rules. Most if not all children can appreciate that adults have different things to them, but in some cases it may be better to set a good example or not set up a fight if drinking water is no big deal.

ConfusedLivingDoll · 25/11/2017 23:19

And most adults I know drink squash, although it's more of a British thing.

Auspiciouspanda · 25/11/2017 23:21

Most places at least have like cordial for beer and black currant for cider so I'd think they'd cater for the squash drinker???

I love squash ❤️

Auspiciouspanda · 25/11/2017 23:22

Lime cordial for beer

ToothTrauma · 25/11/2017 23:26

Who knew squash was such a volatile topic? DH wouldn’t drink any water at all if it didn’t have squash in it. He drinks lime cordial very watered down. I drink lots of water but also like a very weak black currant squash.

Weirdly when friends come over and see we’ve got squash they fall over themselves to get a glass. Evidently none of them buy it even though they like it. Must have read a similar thread and are afraid of being judged in the supermarket Grin

crunchermuncher · 25/11/2017 23:28

I went to a work meeting recently where we were provided a jug of squash instead of water. I thought 'WTF? Who drinks this? '

Quite a lot of people apparently!

Still think it's a weird thing to have in a meeting.

Nomoretears56 · 25/11/2017 23:29

Squash does strange things to my teeth, makes me feel like I've bitten down on a wooly jumper... Wine all the way for me.

1DAD2KIDS · 25/11/2017 23:34

asmuchuseasachocolatefireguard there's difference between communicating at a level a child can understand and this bizarre act of wastefulness. I really not see the value in chucking this drink?
