AIBU- at lunch, with both children and their dad, who’s not around during the week. 2 year old says she doesn’t like the fact he’s got squash and she’s got water. He turns round, completely genuinely (!), and says “oh, shall I throw mine down the sink?”!!!! She says yes, and I interupted just before he got up from his chair to throw away his drink, because the 2 year old didn’t like him having it!!!!!! She’s 2! We are grown ups! We are parents that are supposed to set boundaries and teach them to deal with life!! AIBU??!!

Vimto of course is the food of the gods.

MrsKoala · 25/11/2017 20:44

I'm sure Delia recommended a concentrated red wine reduction bottle that keeps in the fridge for those who don't drink and want to put it in cooking.

AppleKatie · 25/11/2017 20:44

I don't think this is about whether or not adults should drink squash. (For the record I think adults should drink whatever they like!)

But whether or not pandering to a two year old to that extent is a good idea. I'm with you OP I think the two year old should be told that the rules aren't the same for them as for adults. It's not really different from saying that can't have your wine and it's important lesson to learn.

asmuchuseasachocolatefireguard · 25/11/2017 20:45

@deepestdarkestperu I don't drink fizzypop and I rarely buy it

@UrsulaPandress that's true I've seen the small bottles but not all the alcohol boils off when you cook with it and I'd rather just not bother.

@MrsKoala we drink it watered down more than the bottles say and it's not sweet as such, just a smidge of a flavour.

zeeboo · 25/11/2017 20:46

So you got upset because your husband was trying to make a respectful gesture to show your daughter that he doesn't believe himself to be better than or more deserving that him?
Sounds like you who needs to change their behaviour.

WonderTweek · 25/11/2017 20:47

Oh? This "adults don't drink squash" thing is all news to me. I grew up drinking just milk and water but most of my friends (and pretty much every adult I know) drink squash. I drink it occasionally and I'm 32. Halo I don't drink anything with meals but sometimes a nice glass of squash is welcome when I'm thirsty.

I think I'll keep my son away from squash when he's really little as he doesn't need it and I don't want him to get the taste for sweet drinks too young. He has plenty of time to drink it when he's a bit older. That's why we'll probably just not drink it in front of him - although he's only 10 months now so who knows what we'll actually end up doing? Grin

monkeyfacegrace · 25/11/2017 20:50

Vimto mixed with fizzy water is an absolute staple in our house Grin

monkeyfacegrace · 25/11/2017 20:51

And to blow your mind even more, I've never ever ever had a hot drink. Ever.

HRTpatch · 25/11/2017 20:54

I never drink squash, fizzy drinks or juice. Never buy them.
I drink water, tea or alcohol.

LagunaBubbles · 25/11/2017 20:55

This post has opened my eyes to the fact there are some people that would judge others on absolutely anything, it's just drinks, people can drink what they like ffs! Apart from the fact we don't call it squash here in West of Scotland - it's diluting juice - its just a drink!!!

UrsulaPandress · 25/11/2017 20:59

NEVER DRUNK TEA!!!

Reppin · 25/11/2017 21:02

What restaurants serve squash?

RagingFemininist · 25/11/2017 21:12

Yes ur DH answer should have been either

  • oh wouod you like some squash? (If you are happy for your 2yo to always have squash with her mean...)
OR
  • Tough. Adults and children don’t do the same thing.

But throwing it away because his dd, age 2yo!!, is telling him to do so? That’s weird.

Namow · 25/11/2017 21:20

I'm not judging but am just genuinely surprised that grown adults drink squash. In my opinion it tastes grim and it is full of either sugar or absolute shite. I let my kids have it very, very occasionally but mostly we drink water, milk (for kids), herbal teas and husband drinks coffee. But mostly water, especially with meals so that you can taste the food.

With regards to the OP, I think the dad was correct to feel embarrassed about drinking something the child was (presumably) not allowed. He was aware he was being a hypocrite and poor role model. I'm not sure why you stopped him - are you the boss of him?

BuzzKillington · 25/11/2017 21:23

I don't know a single adult that drinks squash.

AnyDanger · 25/11/2017 21:28

If my 2 year old spoke to me like that she’d have the squash dashed on her.

scottishdiem · 25/11/2017 21:33

I drink squash. I have seen tons of adults drink it to. At conferences. Its one of the options on the table. Except its called cordial. Wish is posh squash but squash never the less. I have squash at home.

Oh, and anyone who drinks orange juice made from concentrate is drinking squash. Anyone drinking Tropicana is drinking really complicated squash (Tropicana manufacturing process is one that preserves orange juice by removing oxygen from the freshly squeezed juice. Removing oxygen allows Tropicana to store the juice for long periods of time without freezing or reducing to concentrate. Unfortunately, it also permanently removes all of the natural flavour of the juice - so that orange flavour is a complicated perfume created from concentrated orange juice.).

Anyway, back to the point. I think it was that OPs daughter sought equal status and that her father acquiesced.

CheshireChat · 25/11/2017 21:40

You'd throw your drink at a a two year old because you don't like what she's said?! Really hope you're joking/a GF.

fairgame84 · 25/11/2017 21:41

YANBU. Surely its normal for children to learn that sometimes adults have things that children aren't allowed or can't have.
Giving in to a 2 year old is madness.

CherryZee · 25/11/2017 21:44

I've never seen grown ups drink squash

Nor have I, and I'm pretty old.

It surprises me that pps have said they get 'bored' with water.
How can you get 'bored' with water?

MaidOfStars · 25/11/2017 21:44
  1. Adults drink squash. I mean, obviously I don’t, but some do. This is not a problem Wink
  2. Drinking sweet stuff with dinner (or any savoury meal) is bonkers. Squash, juice, pop, whatever. All disgusting. Grin
NowtAbout · 25/11/2017 21:47

I don't know any adults that drink squash by choice.
