AIBU to ask MNHQ if we can have a trans discussion section?

Out of the first 10 threads showing on my AIBU page 4 of them are trans threads. There is seriously no escaping, please can they have their own board?

It is an emotive topic for me yes. I spend a lot of time on the LGBT scene and as such, have a lot of lesbian friends who have been personally affected by this. Never by transsexuals mind you, but 'transgender' which is entirely different. Along with this I have a transsexual woman in my extended family who is extremely concerned about the proposed changes to the law which she feels will affect her negatively too.

The topic of 'trans kids' concerns me greatly too. So yes, It is a very emotive topic for me.

I think there are very few areas of life where biology matters, but when it does it matters a fair bit.

I used 'daring to report' as there has been almost radio silence from all media sources (except when telling everyone how transphobic it is to question any aspect of it all) until fairly recently. But nice that you equate this with being 'blinkered'.

And no, I don't think I am preachy on the subject tbh. You clearly disagree though Grin

Yep. Only ever an issue when you want it to be; the rest of the time it's sexism, right

Nope. But do carry on.

ApplesinmyPocket · 22/11/2017 06:51

No thank you (as many of us have said every other time this has come up). Don't hide this important subject away.

" I dont want to keep seeing militant feminists droning on about the same scary trans women with penises who want to steal their own right to womenhood."

Talk about misrepresentation! Shock Not to mention over-simplification, and very rude also.

afrikat · 22/11/2017 06:54

Yes I think it should have its own thread as most of the titles are anti-trans and I'm fed up of seeing them.

afrikat · 22/11/2017 06:55

"But then the general populace of MN might not be made aware of the issues."

MN is a chat site, not an awareness raising site. I think they should be put together in one topic.

As there are thrivingly active topics, I find it interesting to see the widespread assumption that this topic would automatically be tumbleweed. If posters want to talk about it, they'll talk about it whatever topic.

If the aI'm to to campaign for a single viewpoint under the cover of 'discussion' MN should think hard about what to do about such threads. Because the reason people keep asking for a topic is because people continue to be fed up with the number of threads and what they see as the transphobic nature of thread titles.

Let me set one thing straight. It’s not that I’m trying to police or hide things from people. It’s more like how I’m interested in dogs so I go to the ‘Pets’ section of the site for discussion of that. So why shouldn’t I be able to go to the ‘trans’ section if that’s what interests me?

No, a different section is not required. You can avoid most trans threads if you wish, it is generally in the thread title. And if you open one by mistake just close it.

Splinterz · 22/11/2017 07:08

I agree with the OP - then we could just call it 'Bigotry Corner' where everyone can just go and vent their imaginary woes

I don't think a trans discussion thread is a good idea - but I do wonder how people find the energy to post on all of them with pretty much the same points and how they remember which thread they are posting on as there are so many.

Skarossinkplunger · 22/11/2017 07:18

I’m perfectly prepared to accept I’m being unreasonable and have not said anything to the contrary. Don’t make assumptions.

OP: AIBU
MN : YES
OP : no I’m not

That does not characterise this thread however,

(Though the OP should have put it in 'Site Issues', so yes she IBU for that. Not in raising the question, as this thread shows there is support)

That does not characterise this thread however

Are you suggesting that people mischaracterise.....on a trans thread Grin

Surely not.

sagamartha · 22/11/2017 07:24

Actually, it seems like an even split with slightly more siding with the OP

Maybe this thread needs some accurate statistics to help make a point...

Runs...

DressedCrab · 22/11/2017 07:32

No. Women are being marginalised and we don't want it happening on the only site where we can speak freely about our concerns.

Skarossinkplunger · 22/11/2017 07:33

Thanks to the poster who pointed out this should be in Site Stuff. I’ll ask for it to be moved.

OP posts:
Skarossinkplunger · 22/11/2017 07:36

Is this really the ONLY site where you can voice your concerns?

OP posts:
crunchermuncher · 22/11/2017 07:37

Instead of saying it's an irrelevant non issue and canning people who raise it patronising radical feminists, can anyone provide a coherent argument as to why self identification won't lead to men having access to vulnerable women in shelters etc? And what can be done to resolve that issue? I mean obviously it will happen, surely that's beyond debate?

I am very interested to learn more about the issues resulting from the GR Bill. Initially I thought it sounded like a great idea but it seems fraught with stumbling blocks that no one has an answer for. And to even question these things gets you shouted down. I find that disturbing.

CisCucumber · 22/11/2017 07:38

YABU this is reflecting changes within our society and what is in the news
I scroll past loads of stuff is that not possible for you?
And new members join all the time

falange · 22/11/2017 07:39

Yes. It’s not needed. Just don’t read the threads about it. That’s what I do because I’m not interested.

Itsgonnabeacoldone · 22/11/2017 07:42

I would love this.

Grumpyfrog · 22/11/2017 07:45

Malcom is pretty much bang on to be fair. The frothing about trans was initially quite funny, as more people are jumping on the bandwagon it's starting to turn a lot more nasty and bigoted.
