To spray a bit of perfume on the bus.

I don't want to sound horrible about people with strong body odour, , but some do positively honk when i'm on the bus. Today a man sat in front of me and the smell nearly took my breath away. Wibu to spray a bit of impulse round my neck. Anyone else do this.

As i pointed out upthread about 50% of my customers have the most revolting none personal hygeine. I mean hair and bodies unwashed so much grease in their hair the smell of them wafts over 3 floors and doesnt disperse. They are not homeless or disabled. Just disgusting people. We have complaints from the other 50% of our customers about the smell. We have had numerous people gag and even a couple have vommited from it. I have had to leave work once because it was so bad it was in my mouth and i couldnt breath or i would vomit. Its not pleasant at all and people have the right to want to cover that stink up. Although aerosols arent on in public transport.

MarthaArthur · 20/11/2017 16:29

I use essential oils on my skin and clothes op. But not patchouli! Thats vile lol.

Olivetappas · 20/11/2017 16:30

Couldn't u just open a window
I find it rude when ppl spray due to someone bad odour I know it's horrible to bear but imagine how embarrassing that is

kaytee of course you know if someone's homeless. A homeless person tends not to pay for an expensive bus ride, usually carries a sleeping bag and all their worldly possessions on their person [in case of theft] maybe you can't spot one, but i certainly can. Don't be ridiculous.

hiddley · 20/11/2017 16:31

A further risk to me would be me vomiting at a bad smell which would make things worse all round!

hiddley · 20/11/2017 16:34

So, was this person well dressed? Looked perfectly capable of washing? Maybe they had walked in dog-shit. The smell can really hurt.

logicalmum · 20/11/2017 16:34

And believe me, when i sprayed there would only have been me that would have smelled it, how bloody much do you think i used. Why should i have had to smell that awful stench. i was nearly physically sick ffs, or do my rights not count.

Kaytee - I think OP is going to write to the bus company so windows are open at all times. Even the door if possible. Seats to be shake n vac'd twice daily, plus the occasional purpose built Magic Tree type thing hidden in the fabric. Sorted Grin

Branleuse · 20/11/2017 16:36

oh god, I used to hate getting on certain bus routes because there would invariably be some member of the great unwashed sitting close to me. There were several occasions where I just could not handle it and had to get off the bus several stops early. Some people just smell VILE. stinky unwashed clothes, that greasy hair smell, Stale sweat.
I would spray perfume if I had it. If its rude, its still not as rude as stinking out an entire fucking bus because youre too scummy to have a wash occasionally

hiddley · 20/11/2017 16:36

Your 'rights'? Lord jaysis but there are some loons knocking about.

xLostx · 20/11/2017 16:36

I have asthma and yes perfume and other sprays set me off so IMO yabu. I also get severe migraines to certain (not many, but some!) sprays and go into a horrible sweat and get very light headed/on the verge of fainting (as in I would faint if I can't escape the spray).

I remember when a woman got on the bus who had clearly only just sprayed herself in perfume but not only just sprayed it, she must have sprayed herself about ten times - I was sat at the back of the bus and could smell it from there whilst she was paying the bus driver! I've never encountered anything like it. Unfortunately she came and sat next to me - cue reaction so sweating, going red/hot, migraine started, starting feeling really sick and faint, I even starting shaking (there were no other seats - I had to get off!). My asthma also started off. I felt absolutely rotten for the rest of the day. Not her fault. I have to get the bus, don't have a choice. Maybe she didn't either.

When you've had reactions like that, or an asthma attack which is quite frightening btw, maybe you would understand why people in enclosed spaces don't want things sprayed around them. It's not as if we choose it.

I also think it was a bit mean to be honest, BO smell is awful and I do get annoyed it at it so I do agree on that point, but it's entirely possible their problem isn't sorted by a quick wash or wearing some £1 deodrant. Maybe they are aware of it and were very aware why you were spraying - it must have been absolutely mortifying for them if they were aware.

logicalmum · 20/11/2017 16:37

hiddley no i think i'd have recognised a dog shit smell. It was a rank body smell., and i disguised it because it made me feel sick.

I hate to break it to you op but not all homeless people look the same, not all disabled people look the same, not all ill people look the same...do I need to go on?

spankhurst · 20/11/2017 16:38

Essential oils all the way - rosemary is very refreshing.

I would prefer scented body spray in my nostrils to acrid BO, tbh, but neither is ideal.

PiffleandWiffle · 20/11/2017 16:38

The man could be homeless with no access to washing facilities. He could have shit himself.

In the first case I doubt he'd be on the bus, in the second case he should get off the fucking bus......

Grasping at straws people, grasping at straws.....

logicalmum · 20/11/2017 16:40

Are they hell aware, they couldn't give a flying fuck, let's not make millions of excuses for them.

I used to work with a woman who would spray impulse in the office when anyone ate anything (including vet inoffensive things like crisps or biscuits) and it would trigger me having a migraine. She knew it and kept doing it. She was a total bitch, sounds familiar.

NooNooHead · 20/11/2017 16:47

I remember a v embarrassing incident when I was in 6th form and wore a tight fitting jacket over a top with tight short sleeves. As I have v strong BO and powerful armpits, I wear v strong antiperspirant (Mitchum), but on this particular day it hadn’t worked as well. I absolutely stank and was mortified at having to sit in an art lesson with a classmate saying someone really stank and the smell was making her feel sick. 😳Blush Even now, I still cringe at it. She didn’t realise it was me, but it was still v embarrassing nonethess. What would have made it worse would have been someone spraying deodorant to mask the smell.

Admittedly I do v occasionally use antiperspirant or body spray when out in public if i’ve had to change my top or used a wipe under my arms, but I would never do it within close proximity of others in a confined space, nor would I do it around young children, the elderly or anyone else for that matter. When I do have to use it, I always use it in a place that is ventilated or has windows.

I do agree that BO can be foul, though. My own BO makes me gag if it gets really bad sometimes... Shock

logicalmum · 20/11/2017 16:47

That's rude too i wouldn't dream of doing that, nothing like what i'm on about though. I know loads of shops that carry air fresheners near the tills and i've seen them blast the whole area after someone smelly has left. Seems a bit extreme but it shows what goes on doesn't it. They have to work there.

OP posts:
IsItThursdayYet · 20/11/2017 16:51

The smell of impulse or perfume in a confined space would make me physically sick, why should I have to smell that awful stench? What about my rights?

TacoFlavouredKisses · 20/11/2017 16:52

Impulse Envy

I normally find discreetly pulling my scarf up to my nose or holding a sleeve to my mouth and nose (either of which normally smell a bit of my perfume already because of wrist/neck spritzing) sufficient.

RoseWhiteTips · 20/11/2017 16:52

Impulse is what 13 year old girls used to use after their PE shower.
