To think nobody likes sprouts. And anyone who says they do is just doing it for attention

I mean they're horrible. People have tried to help them by adding other things to make them not taste like sprouts, but let's just admit that they were never designed to be eaten. The taste is probably some evolutionary defence mechanism that has inexplicably not worked coz humans are daft enough to eat through the disgusting taste.

Anyone that says they like them is lying to us and themselves and is just looking for attention.

YAB so U OP. I love sprouts but like them cooked so they are soft, I hate them when they are undercooked bullets. Mine are already on the boil for Christmas lunch Grin

HotelEuphoria · 19/11/2017 22:42

I love them, buy them as long as they are in the supermarket to buy. And that's just lightly steamed so they are al dente.

Imagine my delight when I had them tossed in butter with crispy pancetta and walnuts. Amazing.

Candlelight234 · 19/11/2017 22:43

Sprouts smell like farts, taste like farts and indeed make you fart profusely. I deliberately left them off the menu / banned them from my house last Christmas Day as they are such offensive little bastards.
My mother in law 'helpfully' brought us some to eat with our Christmas dinner 🙄. I refused to cook them.

RidingWindhorses · 19/11/2017 22:43

Love sprouts. But people like all kinds of weird shit on here - baked beans, mashed potato, Yorkshire pudding, Cadbury's chocolate.

5foot5 · 19/11/2017 22:43

Grin Actually I don't dislike sprouts but your OP and its title has made me laugh so thanks fir that!

Whilst I don't dislike them I don't love them, so we don't have them often. We have them for Christmas dinner because everyone expects them. Especially FIL who once admitted he doesn't like them much but apparently they are traditional and it is one of his jobs to prepare them so we have to have them. How weird is that?

One year I panicked and bought about twice as many as we really needed. After Christmas I used up the surplus to make Brussels sprout and Wensleydale soup. Honestly it was really nice. Even teenage DD liked it and she wouldn't pretend to be polite.

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 19/11/2017 22:44

I like sprouts. Please don’t give me any attention for this though.

honeyroar · 19/11/2017 22:44

I love them. They're the best bit of Xmas dinner for me. I love them mushy too. I've been eating them crunchy in salads all summer. They do make me fart though!

FrenchDucksSayCoinCoin · 19/11/2017 22:44

I like sprouts, but I hate Christmas pudding. My mum hates sprouts. We have a deal that if she eats a sprout then I have a spoonful of pudding. Luckily she has declined for the past four or five years and long may it continue.

Hawkmoth · 19/11/2017 22:45

YABU.

I have often made myself unwell gorging on their sweet cabbagey goodness.

magimedi · 19/11/2017 22:45

Just let your DC play this game !!

Probably the best thing ever done with sprouts.

(Vile veg)

MinkowskisButterfly · 19/11/2017 22:46

I love sprouts! As does my teen and toddler (husband is lucky I love him otherwise I would obviously have to divorce him due to his dislike of them!)

Ginkypig · 19/11/2017 22:47

Sprouts are fucking lovely

Ropsleybunny · 19/11/2017 22:48

I love them.

doctorcuntybollocks · 19/11/2017 22:48

Sprouts smell like farts, taste like farts and indeed make you fart profusely.

They are, indeed, the gift that keeps giving. I love them.

midlifecrash · 19/11/2017 22:48

I like the bitter taste of sprouts, especially if you char them slightly - butter in a heavy pan, add sprouts, let them get a little scorched, add some mustard seed if you like it, add water to come half way up the sprouts, cover with heavy lid so they part steam

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 19/11/2017 22:50

I adore sprouts - they are the only 'leafy' green vegetable i like. Actually I don't just like them I LOVE them. They are by far my favourite vegetable. I used to have cravings for them. As a 20 something year old when I was eating a load of crap and heading off to the cinema with a load of mates I can remember wishing they did buttery sprouts in cones rather than buttery popcorn. That's no lie. I must have been craving something in sprouts. I love them in bubble and squeak too - one of the joys of Boxing Day.

NotEnoughCushions · 19/11/2017 22:50

We all 💚💚💚 sprouts here so maybe it is genetic.

I cooked 30 sprouts for 2 adults, 1 child for dinner tonight. I have also been known to have cold sprouts for breakfast.

We have few friends.

steppemum · 19/11/2017 22:51

not sure about cucumber link. I hadn't hear that there was a genetic component to that.

dh and dcs all eat cucumber. Only 2/5 of us eat sprouts

ChinkChink · 19/11/2017 22:51

Hated them when young, love them now.

And hold the phone - I like them soft, mushy and boiled to death.

I KNOW

Henrythehoover · 19/11/2017 22:53

I love them especially with salad cream on. I quite often just eat a bowl on their own

KickAssAngel · 19/11/2017 22:55

I love sprouts. It's Thanksgiving here this week, and DH and I will be piling on the sprouts. I prefer them lightly boiled, but eat them with bacon, or as part of bubble & squeak.

One year for Christmas we got to DH's aunt's house. We flew over from England to Ireland at the last minute. MIL had got there first and assured everyone that we didn't eat sprouts. Between 12 adults there was one measly little bag of the green beauties. We sent MIL on a last-minute dash to M&S to buy another 2 or 3 bags. Can't have turkey without a pile of green lush sprouts.

mumisnotmyname · 19/11/2017 22:56

I was taken aback at arriving in US and discovering that cooked sprouts are a common offering in the cooked deli part of the supermarket, way before thanksgiving/Xmas. I think there are a more everyday item here?

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 19/11/2017 22:56

Love sprouts. Roasted with a little olive oil, salt and pepper, shredded raw in a salad, lightly steamed - fabulous vegetable.

moutonfou · 19/11/2017 22:57

Me and my brother both love sprouts and have even been known to fight over them.

As an aside, my family sometimes eats mashed sprouts.

kooshbin · 19/11/2017 22:57

As others have said, it's a genetic thing. Which is actually quite fascinating in itself, but it would be interesting to know where that genetic divide originated. I mean, it's a bit like lactose intolerance or cow's milk protein intolerance. Where do all those variations come from?

On the other hand, I hated cabbage - as in, cabbage cooked by my mother who boiled the life out of everything. The only memory of cooking lessons at secondary school was how to cook cabbage properly, as in for not very long at all. For many a year now, DH is in charge of Christmas cooking, and he's more wedded to his steamer than he is to me! Cross-cut the stems, bung them in the steamer, and they come out succulent, rather than a squelchy mess.

But you still need the genes to find them delightful. No amount of garnishing will work otherwise.
