To think nobody likes sprouts. And anyone who says they do is just doing it for attention

I mean they're horrible. People have tried to help them by adding other things to make them not taste like sprouts, but let's just admit that they were never designed to be eaten. The taste is probably some evolutionary defence mechanism that has inexplicably not worked coz humans are daft enough to eat through the disgusting taste.

Anyone that says they like them is lying to us and themselves and is just looking for attention.

Apparently it’s genetic- some people have a gene that’s means they can taste bitterness, others don’t. Explains why sprouts are so polarising...

Take the thick translucent skins off broad beans and they are lovely. But, urgh, childhood memories of the bloody things in parsley sauce. Yuck.

Thesmallthings · 19/11/2017 22:25

Ybu I love them and so do my ds' s
Love them all squishy and soft.

JustHereForThePooStories · 19/11/2017 22:25

Love ‘em! Never really go on about it so don’t think it’s attention-seeking. I wish they were more readily available, all year round.

I don’t like adding other flavours like bacon or nuts etc. Prefer them steamed, with a knob of butter, and some black pepper.

They don’t make me fart either.

MadameJosephine · 19/11/2017 22:26

They are 5 yo DD’s favourite vegetable! She detests carrots and sweetcorn though, strange child

PassiveAgressiveQueen · 19/11/2017 22:29

my 6 year old daughter puts sprouts and cabbage in the shopping trolley, then EATS them both up.
but she also doesn't really like chocolate or anything too sweet, so she is odd in many ways.

MirandaWest · 19/11/2017 22:31

I Love sprouts Smile

Goshthatwentwell · 19/11/2017 22:32

I know the thing about bitter taste receptors but actually I think it's because we generally don't eat them until Christmas.
With the rest of the overly savoury, salty and sweet stuff a bitter vegetable sticks out a mile. You can definitely train yourself and kids to like them by eating them more often.

doctorcuntybollocks · 19/11/2017 22:32

Everything makes me fart, but I love farting so it's all good.

Lookingtothehighlands · 19/11/2017 22:34

I love them , but I'm grateful to people like you as that's probably the reason I was able to pick up 6 bags reduced to 8 p each in the supermarket. Yum!!

glitterlips1 · 19/11/2017 22:34

I like them but don't really eat them apart from at Christmas!

Gemini69 · 19/11/2017 22:35

we all love them in our House.... not sure here we get OUR attention though .. can we order it online Hmm

JaneEyre70 · 19/11/2017 22:36

I think a lot of people dislike them because they've been boiled to death and taste vile. We have ours thinly sliced and pan fried in some butter with white cabbage and leeks. Totally yummy and fab. They def taste better when they've had a hard frost on them too, just like my nan used to say Grin.

Urubu · 19/11/2017 22:36

YABU they are my 3.5 yo DTs favourite, really they see them as a treat - just steamed (never understood the appeal myself though)

user1471443504 · 19/11/2017 22:36

Love them.

paxillin · 19/11/2017 22:37

I fell the same about turkey.

TheWhyteRoseShallRiseAgain · 19/11/2017 22:37

I love them, although I love most veg. (Mr)RNBrie recipe please sounds good to me

Ginnotginger · 19/11/2017 22:39

I like them raw and, as a child, would get into trouble for eating them directly out of the saucepan as my dad was preparing them (same with peas and carrots). Didn't like them cooked until I ate them at a restaurant where they hadn't been boiled to mush.
My Christmas dinner will have raw sprouts and carrots on the side as my dad always saves me some now and as I help mum with the plating up there will be no soggy veg on my plate. I will have to fight my dd and dgs for the raw carrots but the sprouts will be all mine Grin

cushioncovers · 19/11/2017 22:39

I love sprouts and turkey

zoomiee · 19/11/2017 22:40

The sprouts I grew up with were mushy, over cooked, stinking farty horribleness

I love the sprouts my husband makes- fried and then roasted with bacon and a bit of chilli oil. Really really tasty.

Rollmopsrule · 19/11/2017 22:40

Nope I love them. Had some for dinner 😋

TheInterruptingSheep · 19/11/2017 22:41

I’ve never actually tried them, however my 9 year old loves them, even the frozen ones Smile - she would eat them with every meal if she could!

JollyWankers · 19/11/2017 22:41

My mum does. She likes them undercooked. Should I go NC? Grin

TheFairyCaravan · 19/11/2017 22:41

We all love them in our house. I really miss them when they aren't in season.

They are DS2's (20) favourite vegetable. He gets really excited when they appear in the shops. I spoke to him tonight when he was preparing his dinner. (He's at uni) He was having sausage, mash, carrots and sprouts.

Tinuviel · 19/11/2017 22:41

YABU. 3 DCs and I love them and eat them often when they are available. DH is weird and dislikes them. They were known as fairy cabbages when DCs were small.
