Just this really. Santa is a vulgar Americanism.

What was wrong with father Christmas ffs.

Thank you RufusFlowers
You’re the only one to notice it.

So. If people are cringing at my correcting the children (dear god, the Children) but I’m wincing when they say Santa, who’s worse off?

Roll on January Xmas Grin

HostaFireAndIce · 17/11/2017 20:38

You said, I think the ridiculous people aren’t the ones who just say FC, like my granny, but the ones who think they are being ‘dead classy’ in doing so. and I disputed that these people actually exist. Perhaps I am being touchy because this thread seems to have turned into 'pretentious toffs say Father Christmas' and it's 'cringey' and I say Father Christmas most of the time and I don't think it's because I am a middle class try-hard. Well, I might be one, but it's not why I say Father Christmas anyway. I certainly couldn't care less if I hear someone say Santa!

GherkinSnatch · 17/11/2017 20:39

It's been Santa for over 40 odd years. It's definitely not at Americanism

I'll see your "over 40 odd years" and say for over 60 odd ears, my dad has always called the Yule-tide gift-bringer Santa too.

Confuzzlediddled · 17/11/2017 20:39

@BenLui I don't need to type my answer its the same as yours, even the ages are the same!

HostaFireAndIce · 17/11/2017 20:40

Sorry, Power, cross post! I think we are slightly arguing at cross purposes because I have honestly never met someone that I suspect says 'Father Christmas' in an effort to appear posh - I suppose because I don't think it is posh! I agree with posters who say it's regional. However, I think this is a relatively minor point to have a falling out about Wink

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 17/11/2017 20:41

When I was growing up in South Yorkshire, it was Father Christmas. OMG The excitement!! I can almost taste it!!

My children have grown up down south, and at home it has always been Father Christmas, with excursions into Santa for school /friends etc. They were mainly Father Christmas but a bit interchangeable.

It's lovely the way traditions slightly evolve, and regional variations come together but to me he will always be Father Christmas! 😊

BabyLionCub · 17/11/2017 20:41

Santy Grin I've never heard that before, I love it.

My DDs two, and I've taught her about Father Christmas. But she always wants to ft the big man, and he's always called santa on the apps. So now we say FC and santa. And now Santy Grin

SumAndSubstance · 17/11/2017 20:42

Gherkin, how new do you think America is?! Wink

loonyloo · 17/11/2017 20:43

justbinthefeckinbyebyebox Wessail cups?! I've never even heard that before!

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 17/11/2017 20:43

Oh - and we were V working class - it was regional...

ByThePowerOfRa · 17/11/2017 20:43

You said, I think the ridiculous people aren’t the ones who just say FC, like my granny, but the ones who think they are being ‘dead classy’ in doing so. and I disputed that these people actually exist.

No, you didn’t just dispute that these people actually exist. You got defensive and accused me of saying that all people who say FC (other than my granny) are middle class try hates, when that was exactly the opposite of what I was saying.

Sorry this thread has clearly got to you, but you’re picking on the wrong person I’m afraid. I made no mass generalisations about people who say Father Christmas being pretentious.

Honestly if you met the uptight middle class try hard I mentioned (one individual you will note), you would immediately identify her as an uptight middle class try hard. She’s dreadful tbh, aside from what she calls Captain Christmas.

PodgeBod · 17/11/2017 20:44

BenLui I don’t get how Santa could be vulgar either but some people on this thread have been quite mean about good old Father Christmas and his fans.

HostaFireAndIce · 17/11/2017 20:49

but you’re picking on the wrong person I’m afraid.
I did acknowledge that this could be the case, I promise! I don't want to fight!
I wasn't disputing that the person you know may well be a knob, I'm just not totally convinced that that's why they say 'Father Christmas' Wink

ByThePowerOfRa · 17/11/2017 20:50

Glad you agree! She is such a knob isn’t she Wink?

HostaFireAndIce · 17/11/2017 20:50

Plus, I've totally chilled out now that I have decided to ban calling the Yuletide gift-giver anything other than Captain Christmas. Matter resolved Grin

PeiPeiPing · 17/11/2017 20:52

PMSL at the posters saying only the common folk say 'SANTA' I am looking at YOOOOU @wiggypudding Grin (And a few others obvs!)

It's got fuck-all to do with class. Don't talk such shite. It's regional!

I bet you think 'only common folk' say tea instead of dinner too, and 'mother's day' instead of 'mothering Sunday.'

People should be allowed to use whatever term they wish, without 'wannabe middle class' folk slagging them off for it and saying they must be lower class...... Wink

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/11/2017 20:52

As previously quoted by another poster , i am and always will be with The Boss

Santa claus is (definitely) coming to town

Do we not have santa hats yet??

paxillin · 17/11/2017 20:52

Santa feels inflatable snowman, plastic tat, false celebration of a Christian festival (and yes it’s in the name regardless of early English winter celebrations). It conveys nothing but self indulgence and excess - not what Christmas is actually about.

Which role did Father Christmas play during Jesus' birth?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/11/2017 20:53

And yes, i know he is an American

HostaFireAndIce · 17/11/2017 20:53

Power, I bet she really is Wink

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/11/2017 20:53

Oh man oy has a santa hat [ssad]

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/11/2017 20:53

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/11/2017 20:54

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/11/2017 20:54

Christinayangstwistedsista · 17/11/2017 20:54

See, now we have started Rufus off in November, usually we manage to restrain her until 1st December
