For some Father Christmas has pagan origins - but then so does the tradition of hanging holly, Christmas tree, yule logs etc...

I was raised with Father Christmas (south of England) and from my quick research it seems the character of Father Christmas as the presiding spirit of Christmas first came about around the civil war period when Royalist printed pamphlets using his character to criticize the Puritans in parliament for abolishing abolishing the church celebration of Christmas. (see wikepedia).

Dammit

Note to self...dont tell christina you are out of the box until she is safely tied down with tinsel and cant warn anyone

BenLui · 17/11/2017 21:01

Podge and they shouldn’t have been rude, Father Christmas is just as valid as Santa Claus.

I suspect however it’s a reaction to years of MNers complaining about the vulgarity of Halloween and how it’s an American import.

Of people not realising that English class signifiers are often not relevant in other parts of the UK.

Of being accused of being a troll if you mention a school holiday that doesn’t match England and Wales.

Of the general frustration that MN yet again reveals quite how little people in England appear to know about life in Scotland, Ireland and (I assume Wales).

paxillin · 17/11/2017 21:02

Oh, he was the birthing partner, Rufus? That can't have been good for Mary's reputation. How many not-the dads did she have in attendance Shock?

paxillin · 17/11/2017 21:04

What's the rule about an inflatable Jesus? I do see that inflatable snowmen are not what Christmas is about.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 17/11/2017 21:05

Father Christmas is cissexist. What if they identified as a woman or non-binary? Saying ‘Santa’ is more appropriate, it doesn’t assume their gender

pax

Well i think her reputation was shot by then to be honest

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/11/2017 21:06

I was thinking of buying some metal penguins for the back garden

If i call it a patio does that make it better or worse

Christinayangstwistedsista · 17/11/2017 21:06

I think as long ad he has an inflatable donkey then that is okay. Don't place him to close to the aga mind

LaurieMarlow · 17/11/2017 21:07

Honestly, the ignorance on this thread. It's always been Santa in Ireland.

paxillin · 17/11/2017 21:07

Christmas is definitely not about penguins. Buy donkeys instead.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/11/2017 21:07

Bit like these

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/11/2017 21:08

Give me a minute

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/11/2017 21:09

paxillin · 17/11/2017 21:09

See Rufus, Christina agrees. Donkeys. Metal or inflatable as soon as we have confirmation about the inflatable Jesus.

My inflatable Jesus sings 4 electronic tunes, including Jingle Bells and Santa Claus is coming to town.

paxillin · 17/11/2017 21:11

There is a camel! What do you call a three-humped camel?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/11/2017 21:13

No donkey

I notice their is no Father Christmas in that scene. History re-written! It is a conspiracy. Those consumerist Santa supporters trying to minimise Father Christmas' leading role in the whole story!

paxillin · 17/11/2017 21:19

This thread gets earlier every year. True. It is so very uncultured to talk about Christmas before Advent Sunday. A faux pas almost surpassing Santa.

Christinayangstwistedsista · 17/11/2017 21:21

A tad disappointed with your efforts there Rufus, no donkey or Father Christmas?
