Admittedly, I am an (ex Catholic) atheist but are there any Christians on here who also found it funny?

I think it's absolutely hilarious. Moreso, the comments on our local papers facebook page had me tickled all night. 'You do realise that Jesus spelled backwards is 'S U S E J'. Repeating this in my thick north eastern accent had me howling!

SabineUndine · 16/11/2017 22:43

I don’t find the sausage roll more than mildly amusing but the pearl-clutching from the ‘holier than thou’ contingent nearly made me pee myself.

cornflakegirl · 16/11/2017 23:12

I'm a Christian. Not offended, but I did think it was a really half-arsed joke. Where was the effort and the imagination? Not a patch on Henry hoovers.

somethingDifferent38 · 17/11/2017 00:12

I'm struggling a bit with the whole offensive to jews because Jewish people don't eat pork thing...
Jesus started his own religion, and that didn't ban pork, so IF the idea of eating pork is what's offensive, wouldn't it mean Judaism saw Jesus as spreading something wrong (by allowing it, in his religion)? So they wouldn't revere Jesus as a prophet anyway?
As he is seen as a respected figure, and the Jewish religion seem OK with him having his own whole (pork permissive) religion - would it not be likely that Judaism would not really be so bothered about what is in a sausage roll, in comparison?
Or are we saying that Christians are upset on behalf of the Jewish religion?
I understand it isn't for me to say what people can be offended about, and I can see how a Christian could take offence if they tried, but I don't understand the logic here for offence to jews.

Julie8008 · 17/11/2017 00:36

Christians are offended on behalf of Jews because they got to the Quorn sausage roll first.

FannyWisdom · 17/11/2017 00:57

Ok.
Confession time.
In 1987 I nicked the blessed Baby Jesus and put a he-man doll in his place.
I was still a practicing RC then.
Sorry for any offence caused or assumed.

FrostyPopThePenguinLord · 17/11/2017 01:26

The actual pork content of a greggs sausage roll is questionable....also why would Jews be offended, they might not want to eat pork themselves but I don't think the existence of sausage rolls or pigs for that matter offends them overly. The M&S adverts at Christmas are what my husband describes as 'food porn' I've seen no complaints about offending religions whilst a ham is being sliced seductively with a festive background.....

Italiangreyhound · 17/11/2017 01:41

Each to their own, it is a free country so if people want to mock the nativity scene they can.

But does show how people think different religions deserve different levels of respect.

CoraPirbright "...try to follow Christian values/be a good person. Just heard this on the news and roared with laughter. Didn’t occur to me that perhaps Jewish people would be offended with the whole pork thing so I am sorry for that aspect."

Why are you sorry for offending Jewish people but not Christian ones?

I found it laughable but not in a good way. It was crass and the last thing it made me want to do was eat a sausage roll! Or buy an overpriced advent calendar (I hope it's a flop!)

I think it shows Greggs in a really poor light. They don't need any negative publicity, their food is bad enough. I had one of their festive pastries the other day and it was vile. I also had a festive sandwich, which was even worse!

Purpledaisies I looked up the Henry hoover nativity scene and love it. I don't think this is cruel minded, but I think the sausage roll was.

metro.co.uk/2014/12/08/henry-the-hoover-nativity-scene-is-winning-christmas-4979495/

Maybe it is something about substituting a person for food! I Even if people are not at all religious to mock something other people hold dear is rather low. Christian charities and organisations have set up hospitals, schools etc all over the world, I just think it is sad that people want to mock a religion with a mediocre pastry!

Italiangreyhound · 17/11/2017 01:42

But FrostyPopThePenguinLord this isn't any ordinary festive background...

Julie8008 · 17/11/2017 01:49

Why are Jewish people offended by pork?

Italiangreyhound · 17/11/2017 02:00

Because they consider it unclean.

Italiangreyhound · 17/11/2017 02:01

Bloody hell, wish I had not started reading this thread I am really hungry now!

Julie8008 · 17/11/2017 02:13

Because they consider it unclean

No I get that bit. But what does unclean mean? I am assuming it doesn't mean they feel like having a bath? Or does it? Does it involve self flagellation?

Italiangreyhound · 17/11/2017 02:20

They don't eat it. No thoughts of self flagellation in relation to pork.

But yes, you are right, the nativity scene of a Jewish man who is the messiah of the Jewish faith, but unrecognized by Jews (from the Christian viewpoint) or an imposter/heretic (from the Jewish point of view) is far more of an issue for Jews than his being replaced by a sausage roll!

So, no, I don't think Jews would be offended.

But it shows that people are desperate to not offend anyone, except Christians!

SuperBeagle · 17/11/2017 02:28

No logical reason this would be offensive to Jews. I assumed this is coming from offended Christians, who have realised that they're being twits by being offended by something so small, and are now saying, "But it's offending the Jews!"

Jews don't acknowledge Jesus at all. None of this "Jesus was Jewish" shit is actually enshrined by Jews.

Jews don't eat pork, traditionally, but don't admonish those who do.

Jews don't observe Christmas.

So, where on Earth are people getting this "Jews are offended" shit?

HelenaDove · 17/11/2017 02:32
Im a fellow Dave Allen fan. I read his biography a few years back. (the one compiled by and with forewords to each chapter written by Graham McCann. )

Christmas telly was so much better with Dave Allen on the schedule.

PurpleDaisies · 17/11/2017 06:42

No logical reason this would be offensive to Jews. I assumed this is coming from offended Christians, who have realised that they're being twits by being offended by something so small, and are now saying, "But it's offending the Jews!"

If you look at this thread, it’s the opposite situation-it appears to be non-religious people being offended on behalf of Jews without really understanding how they view Christmas/Jesus. As far as I can see, all the Christians (or the vast majority of them) aren’t offended.

samG76 · 17/11/2017 08:25

I'm quite religious, and I'm not remotely offended. Jews don't see pigs as unclean - just something we don't eat, like horses and most animals in the world other than cattle.

MaisyPops · 17/11/2017 08:27

Christian here and found it funny.

Like others though, I sometimes question whether all religions would be fair game for this kind of thing.

Madhairday · 17/11/2017 08:44

Fairly out there Christian here.

Made me giggle. Reminded me of the playmobil nativity I bought my DC when they were younger, as they were older they took great delight in adding other playmobil characters and swapping them out. We've had a zombie pirate in the crib, Robin Hood as Joseph, an angel wielding two guns and a cutlass, etc etc. I really don't get the Offended.

Could possibly take offence at Greggs' plain sight cynical marketing here, but meh. They've been pretty clever.
