Admittedly, I am an (ex Catholic) atheist but are there any Christians on here who also found it funny?

OP posts:
SatansLittleHelper2 · 16/11/2017 12:45

Full of assumptions here.......maybe the sausage roll self identifies as a beef sausage roll under all that pastry.

Jenpug · 16/11/2017 12:49

I'm catholic and i find it amusing. I see it as the sausage roll is so awesome it's like the second coming, not that Jesus is a sausage roll.

Minstrelsareyum · 16/11/2017 13:06

I’m a Christian and was not offended. Made me smile! A sausage roll cast in the role of Jesus is hopefully reminding people about the true story of Christmas, the birth of the Messiah. It would have been a great touch if the sausage role had had been wrapped in swaddling clothes or whatever but hey ho.

DeadDeadDeadRose · 16/11/2017 13:07

When somebody decides we shouldn't do something because it would offend some group, when they're not in that group.

Where did I say they shouldn't have done it? The OP asked if Christians found it offensive. I commented that I wasn't Christian, yet still found it disrespectful. I don't think they should remove the ads. I just don't like them. It won't even put me off Greggs, I like their sausage rolls.

SandyY2K · 16/11/2017 13:10

It's not funny to me, but if you arent religious.... you wouldn't be fussed about it.

It's incredibly foolish and I can't understand how they didn't think this would cause offence tbh.

SandyY2K · 16/11/2017 13:11

And I'm Christian..Catholic.

PurpleDaisies · 16/11/2017 13:18

Lots of Christians aren’t fussed about it. Confused

JonSnowsWife · 16/11/2017 13:19

Ironically, this is an old tweet from one of the people infuriated by the advert.

Atheist here, I hope it didn't offend Christians too much, and I think it's a credit to Christianity that nobody thinks that Christians are going to go batshit mental over a mild mickey-taking like this.

The way Mary is looking at that sausage roll... I've gazed on the odd Gregg's sausage roll with exactly that look of loving adoration Grin

JonSnowsWife · 16/11/2017 13:22

My DM is a devout christian. She's not fussed in the slightest. Neither are many of her christian friends.

It's Pagan anyway, well it was until the christians nicked yuletide and renamed it Christmas.

BroomstickOfLove · 16/11/2017 13:44

Christian here. I didn't think it was particularly funny, but didn't get offended either. Sausage rolls are pretty far down my list of things to get worked up about, and I think it's it's a bit scary when any group insists they mustn't be laughed at (unless it's a group where the thing the people have in common is a particular sort of suffering).

SandyY2K · 16/11/2017 13:56

Some people are religious in name only though. Religion really doesn't mean anything to them.... so no need for them to be offended.

A bit like the very religious man, who serves Eucharist on Sundays ... deciding to give up sex with his OW for lent... it's a joke. And yes..This is true

...but it's not worth dying in a ditch over. It's simply poor taste for an advert. (No pun intended)

PurpleDaisies · 16/11/2017 14:03

I go to church twice on Sundays, run a home group, teach Sunday school, am on the church pc, etc. Does that pass your bar for being a proper Christian? I’m still not offended. Smile

JonSnowsWife · 16/11/2017 14:38

You think someone that's been going to church for thirty years, works at the Sunday school, leads the fellowship group weekly and goes more than once a week to all the bible meetings and prayer meetings, twice on Sundays, is religious in name only? Hmm

MissEliza · 16/11/2017 14:41

I’m not a Christian and I did smile at first but it’s shit how disrespectful people are towards Christianity. You can’t get away with doing it to any other religion.

JonSnowsWife · 16/11/2017 14:44

Poor taste took me a minute to click then!Grin

It isn't though. Not liking something does not mean it's in poor taste. I can't stand the flash advert because I can't stand Queen. I've not yet petitioned for them them to take the advert down just because I don't like it.

If we want to get real semantic, it was however, in poor taste to steal yuletide, and rename it Christmas hoping no one would notice but you don't see the Pagans protesting every year at their festival being stamped all over.

mumeeee · 16/11/2017 14:47

MissEliza what do you mean by you cant get away with doing it to another religion? Charlie Hebdo certainly didnt. ISIS saw to that. Sad

Julie8008 · 16/11/2017 14:56

Why are gods such precious snowflakes that they would get their knickers in a twist over a sausage roll?

RebeccatheOld · 16/11/2017 15:09

Hmm I'm a Christian, I don't find it at all offensive, but its not particularly funny. Its just a sausage roll shrugs

We have a nativity set to which we have added figurines of a dinosaur, a blues brother, and the kid from star wars.

Kentnurse2015 · 16/11/2017 15:16

I'm catholic. No offence here. But I do think if it wasn't a Christian relidgion the outrage would be far greater!

The80sweregreat · 16/11/2017 15:17

They were discussing this on LBC this morning - I am not remotely religious and I only go to the C/ E church for the usual weddings/ funerals etc, but I do find it disrespectful and I just think that Greggs were well aware that people wouldnt ' find it funny' and just done this for more publicity. Its always the christian church that is thought of as the ones ' that can take a joke ' but a big corporation wouldn;t dream of disrespecting another religion. its just my opinion and I am not normally one to be po faced about things , but I just think its not in the best taste ( no pun intended) and they should just leave christians to celebrate how they want to at this time of year without making fun of them.

Julie8008 · 16/11/2017 15:19

But I do think if it wasn't a Christian relidgion the outrage would be far greater!

Your right, but that is probably the burden of having christianity as the state religion. It has to set an example.

DeleteOrDecay · 16/11/2017 16:09

Greggs is a big corporation, isn’t it? In the U.K. at least. There’s one on pretty much every high street, there’s two in my local shopping centre.

The80sweregreat · 16/11/2017 16:14

I know they are huge, but I was just thinking of other much bigger organisations and how they wouldn't have done this - why don't these companies just think a bit before doing this type of thing? Just leave people to celebrate Christmas as they wish!
