Admittedly, I am an (ex Catholic) atheist but are there any Christians on here who also found it funny?

Yes I though it was funny, and I thought they should have gone the whole hog and had baked goods as the 3 wise men too. But with hindsight,I can understand the anger from certain quarters. Christianity seems to be fair game these days for having fun poked at it. Can you imagine the backlash from Muslims if someone depicted the prophet Mohammed as a sausage roll?

Julie8008 · 16/11/2017 17:16

To be fair Muslims didn't make much fuss about Draw Mohammed day this year and that is a lot more offensive than a sausage roll baby. I think most religions get the piss taken out of them quite a lot. Christians are still getting used to not having as much privilege as they used to.

Ceto · 16/11/2017 19:58

Interesting that the only people on here who suggest this is offensive are an atheist and people who admit they're not church attenders.

dementedma · 16/11/2017 20:03

I am normally the least offended by anything person, but I didnt like the Greggs ad. Paint a beard on the sausage roll and call it Mohammad(pbuh) and see what the response is...
Thought it a bit crass to be honest.

The80sweregreat · 16/11/2017 20:16

I get it. I know ‘it’s just a sausage roll, it’s a joke’ but the Christian church should be left alone. I feel bad on their behalf.

Why should it be left alone? Is there any evidence that it wants to be left alone? I (and all my Christian friends) love a bit of church Mickey taking. There’s a lot of material for comedy there.

HazelBite · 16/11/2017 20:21

Its all rather tasteless Wink

The80sweregreat · 16/11/2017 20:23

Purple. That’s good. I do understand. Let’s just all live and live live.

The80sweregreat · 16/11/2017 20:24

Live and let live rather.

Boulshired · 16/11/2017 21:00

I do think sometimes Christianity is viewed in the UK as an acceptable religion to poke fun at, but there are Christians who are very devout who do not get the same respect of their religion as others. My old NDN was a Christian from the Middle East and granted asylum on the grounds of religious persecution. She was far more devout than any Christians I have ever met even catholic MIL. She was very upset that her religious beliefs were never accounted for in a way they would be is she had been a different religion from the Middle East.

Julie8008 · 16/11/2017 21:38

Has anyone mentioned that the baby jesus sausage roll has a bite taken out of it. What is the symbolism of that to christianity?

speakout · 16/11/2017 21:45

A nod to circumcision perhaps?

PurpleDaisies · 16/11/2017 21:46

Circumcision isn’t a Christian thing speakout.

AlexanderHamilton · 16/11/2017 21:46

I thought it was funny & would not have apologised.

ReanimatedSGB · 16/11/2017 21:57

No religion deserves any 'respect' if you mean 'pretending to take it seriously'. I agree with PP who pointed out that, in the UK, taking the piss out of the state religion is OK because it's punching up, whereas a corporation mocking a minority religion would be a bit iffy (even though all religions are equally ridiculous) because it's not OK for corporations to mock minorities. Though we'll be a properly integrated society when all religions are fair game for pisstaking, but I'm not holding my breath...

speakout · 16/11/2017 22:00

purpledaisies- Luke 2:21 tells us that jesus was circumcised as a baby.

PurpleDaisies · 16/11/2017 22:04

Jesus himself was circumcised but there’s no requirement for Christians after him to be circumcised.

Julie8008 · 16/11/2017 22:23

Jesus himself was circumcised

Was he? we don't even know if he even existed, how do we know someone inspected his dangly bits and correctly recorded it for mumsnet to read about 2000 years later? Blush

OlennasWimple · 16/11/2017 22:29

The only shocking thing was that they had a baby Jesus / sausage roll in the nativity scene so early, when everyone knows that it shouldn't emerge until Christmas Day

eurochick · 16/11/2017 22:31

I'm not offended myself but I was a bit Shock that someone though using a pork product to replace a Jewish biblical figure and prophet in Islam was a good idea.

Julie8008 · 16/11/2017 22:33

They made the sausage in question out of quorn. Suitable for vegetarians.

PortiaCastis · 16/11/2017 22:35

Grin and the sainted macca said it shall be my missus quorn

speakout · 16/11/2017 22:37

using a pork product to replace a Jewish biblical figure

I'll have a look at my copy of Debretts to see what is protocol in such circumstances.

I think there is a section on acceptable processed meat products and biblical character substitution. Chapter 8 as I recall.

ALemonyPea · 16/11/2017 22:41

This made me laugh.

Julie8008 · 16/11/2017 22:41

Maybe the 3 wise men ate the sausage roll because they were hungry after their long walk, that then freed up a space for Jesus to lie down. I imagine they did eat back then and apparently it was quite crowded at the inn that night and pub food was all that was left.
