Admittedly, I am an (ex Catholic) atheist but are there any Christians on here who also found it funny?

OP posts:
Liiinoo · 15/11/2017 19:31

It was tasteless which is pretty appropriate for Greggs.

Ceto · 15/11/2017 19:33

But why do we have to respect religions at all, DeadDead? If someone chooses to believe in something, that's their choice, it doesn't mean the rest of us have to respect it. If we have to respect other people's choices, I hope you object strongly every time you hear a joke or something disrespectful about, say, lawyers or estate agents?

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 15/11/2017 19:34

I wouldn't go so far as to call it hilarious, but I definitely thought it was funny!

It honestly didn't occur to me that it could be seen as offensive Blush.

GrouchyKiwi · 15/11/2017 19:35

I think it's funny and I go to the Free Church. Grin

Also it made me crave sausage rolls, so it obviously worked.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/11/2017 19:35

I'm an Anglican - I thought it was hilarious!

Shiela2017 · 15/11/2017 19:37

I thinks it a bit rude and shitty tbh, I don't find laughing at other peoples beliefs very funny. However its important we have the option to laugh/question such things without any real issue (religion/ways of thinking - not individuals). I mean can you imagine the shit show if it was another certain religion this advert was taking the piss out of?!

SilverySurfer · 15/11/2017 19:41

Having seen the extruded grey goo that goes into their 'sausage' rolls, if it puts off even one person from buying one, it's a job well done quite honestly.

Rebeccaslicker · 15/11/2017 19:42

Completely agree with je reviens - not funny or offensive but no such thing as bad publicity!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/11/2017 19:44

Love the Henry Nativity, too.

Any religion that can't laugh at itself is weak and undeserving of any followers. When dictators take over a country, the first thing they do is ban humour and satire aimed at them. That's because they know that it is destructive to anything or anyone who is without foundation.

Caught away, folks - God's shoulders are broad.

Laiste · 15/11/2017 19:45

ceto if you had a jew or a muslim coming to dinner would you respect their avoidance of pork or shell fish? Or would that fall within 'why should i'?

TabbyMack · 15/11/2017 19:47

I, for one, am extremely offended when someone dictates to me what I should and should not “respect”. Respect is earned, not demanded...and I will decide what i respect.

Religious people demand respect purely to shut down embarrasing truths about their beliefs, and the “I’m an atheist but...’ave a bit of respect” bunch are virtue signalling, nothing less.

And, with regard to the comments about why people don’t poke fun at Islam in same way, I should think the answer is bloody obvious. There have been violent riots over the naming of teddy bears, if you remember...and a bunch if journalists were recently murdered over cartoons.

Islamic offence is often murderous. Fact. And this won’t change while privileged white Westerners are pretending that criticism of a religion is “racist” simply because most of the adherents have brown skin.

Our world will be a much safer place when Islam can be mocked without subsequent bloodshed.

Ceto · 15/11/2017 19:50

Laiste, if you can't see the difference between ordinary courtesy to your invited guests and an advert, you have problems.

Tell me, do you respect every religion, no matter how it manifests itself?

wrenika · 15/11/2017 19:51

I think it's hilarious - but I'm not religious.
My DP, who is (lapsed) Catholic, thinks it's clever cause instead of the 'adoration of Christ', it's the 'adoration of the sausage roll'...and if you want an image of something the Great British public adore, a greggs sausage roll comes infinitely higher the Jesus!

MadMags · 15/11/2017 19:52

As far as I can see, you're the only one who mentioned "racist" Tabby. Apologies if I missed something.

Birdsgottafly · 15/11/2017 19:54

"But why do we have to respect religions at all? If someone chooses to believe in something, that's their choice"

Respect (religious) meaning,
" having due regard for the feelings, wishes, or rights of others."

What's the issue with that? If we could all behave like twats whenever we wanted, what would Society be like?

If it became a free-for-all, how would that pan out for you?

I immediately made the connection between the Pork and the Jewish religion.

It wouldn't have got to the drawing board if it was a Pork product and concerned an Islam celebration.

It seems that this year any publicity is good publicity.

We have Advertising standards etc and they need to be pulling rank and issuing warnings.

You know Jews don’t celebrate Christmas?

Trb17 · 15/11/2017 19:56

Not gonna lie. I laughed.

Baby cheeses make me giggle too.

Grin
Birdsgottafly · 15/11/2017 19:57

", if you can't see the difference between ordinary courtesy to your invited guests and an advert, you have problems."

What enters public spaces is actually more controlled than actions in private. They are more important. Have you missed the Remembrance stuff? Lest we forget and so it doesn't happen again?

jellybeanteaparty · 15/11/2017 19:58

As a Christian of the charismatic flavour I found it funny.
More pleased that the nativity was referenced and not ignored/replaced however would liked to have seen some ice bun angels, pasty sheep and 3 wise donuts.......

Birdsgottafly · 15/11/2017 19:58

"You know Jews don’t celebrate Christmas?"

That doesn't make them blind to Christmas Adverts.

missyB1 · 15/11/2017 20:02

Doesn't offend me and I'm Catholic, I dont find it funny though, just doesn't appeal to my sense of humour I suppose.

I do agree they would never dare do something like this to Islam, imagine a fatwa on all Greggs employees! However its to the credit of Christians that they dont on the whole get their knickers in a twist about this sort of thing.

BanyanTree · 15/11/2017 20:03

The comments under the articles are priceless. It was hilarious.

That said I am annoyed by the fact that they are happy to ridicule our religion but too PC to do others.

queenofthebucket · 15/11/2017 20:03

laughed out loud whilst listening to the news in the bath!

PurpleDaisies · 15/11/2017 20:03

That doesn't make them blind to Christmas Adverts.

That makes no logical sense. Why would a Jew who doesn’t celebrate Christmas or see Jesus as anything other than a man be worried about him being replaced by a sausage roll in a nativity scene? You’re not suggesting all pork advertising be pulled (!) in case it offends those who don’t eat it?

BanyanTree · 15/11/2017 20:22

This is not the first time sausages have been used to depict the birth of Jesus or from hence known as Susej.

AIBU to find the Greggs nativity sausage really, really funny?
