AIBU to find the Greggs nativity sausage really, really funny?

Admittedly, I am an (ex Catholic) atheist but are there any Christians on here who also found it funny?

OP posts:

Both Christian here. Dh is RC and he found it rather distasteful whereas I think it’s lovely that Christianity is able to smile a little secure in the knowledge that it is ok to joke sometimes. I was just glad that Greggs used the Nativity to represent Christmas. Babies can look like cute little sausage rolls all swaddled tightly.

DeleteOrDecay · 16/11/2017 10:32

In what way is it hypocritical?

TonTonMacoute · 16/11/2017 10:50

It’s offensive because it was not even remotely cleverly or subtly done, it’s just crass and rude.

As far as I am concerned, it brands Greggs’ customers as the sort of people who would shove a half eaten sausage roll into a nativity scene, as they reeled drunkenly home from the pub, which doesn’t seem like great marketing to me.

If they had used even an ounce of creativity and imagination I might have chuckled, but as it is? They have plummeted in my estimation - but I live in Cornwall, so I prefer real pasties anyway Smile.

Well, "Lord Jesus" backards is Susej Drol!

safariboot · 16/11/2017 11:26

I'm an atheist but found it really disrespectful.

This is why we get political correctness gone mad. When somebody decides we shouldn't do something because it would offend some group, when they're not in that group.

ScipioAfricanus · 16/11/2017 11:42

I think it’s important that religion can be mocked/played about with, but ideally people would be respectful of all the beliefs of others (be that atheism, Islam or Christianity, etc). I don’t like a corporation choosing to do this; it would feel different if it were a comedian or a joke between friends. And it is a point that all religions aren’t subject to the same public mockery. Interesting that no one saw a potential problem with pork either.

IsItThursdayYet · 16/11/2017 11:47

I'm a practicing Christian and it didn't really bother me. The Henry hoover one on the other hand I LOVE!

I've also been eyeing up that happyland one for a while, I think it's so cute.

MakeMisogynyAHateCrime · 16/11/2017 11:48

I'm Christian and one of my sideline jobs is working for an organisation within a major church. I thought it was hilarious and so did everyone I work with. We even discussed having sausage rolls at our end of week meeting tomorrow but no one can be arsed to drive out of the way to pick them up, so we'll probably just have a tray of non-Christ sandwiches from Jan's house.

sweetdreamsaremadeofbees · 16/11/2017 11:49

pennysnow hit the nail on the head.

It's funny but can you imagine it was Islam being mocked?

Mooncuplanding · 16/11/2017 11:50

I am sure that Greggs don't claim to be anything other than crass. It fits perfectly with their branding.

A Greggs sausage roll will never be a thing of sophistication and beauty

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 16/11/2017 11:53

Devout church-going, praying, Hillsong-listening-to Christian here...

who found it fucking HILARIOUS!

I nearly posted about it on here, but was scared of pissing people off!

The advert I REALLY hate is that one which is silent, with revolving pictures of cars on it (can't remember wtaf it's advertizing now!) I have the TV on in the background while I'm doing other stuff, and the silence distracts me! I check to see if I've accidentally pressed the mute button!!! 😅

Rinoachicken · 16/11/2017 11:55

How much actual pork is actually in a Greggs sausage roll though??!!

Johnnycomelately1 · 16/11/2017 11:55

Yeah, I've got to say they've aligned themselves with their target market perfectly.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 16/11/2017 11:55

Do balls and feet count as "real pork"?

JonSnowsWife · 16/11/2017 11:57

my point is that people who 'mock' religion only ever do it to Christianity IYSWIM.

No they don't.

Charlie Hebdo?

TriJo · 16/11/2017 12:01

Raised Catholic, long-time atheist though - found it funny.

Clandestino · 16/11/2017 12:07

It was absolutely hilarious, I loved the ad!!!

Clandestino · 16/11/2017 12:10

I do nt think it’s offensive but it is childish and hypocritical, are they making jokes about Islam ?

I think the staff of Charlie Hebdo could tell a story or two about it.

Ceto · 16/11/2017 12:10

It's funny but can you imagine it was Islam being mocked?

This is such a crass comparison. As pointed out upthread, we don't tend to mock Islam because there are extremists out there who react by killing people. It's not because we respect Islam and Muslims more, or are less concerned about offending Christians. It would be a much healthier world if we could mock all religions without fear in the same way as we mock politicians.

FrankensteinsSister · 16/11/2017 12:27

I assure you that even Jews who keep kosher are aware of the existence of pork products and unlikely to be offended by them.

averylongtimeago · 16/11/2017 12:37

Brought up a practising member of the C of E even taught Sunday school and it made me smile, the reporting is really funny though. The Henry hovers are sweet. Last year my DD's DH replaced Baby Jesus with a baby bell to be the "baby chessus" which we all enjoyed.
Two of my favourite ever shows were Father Ted and Dave Allen.

For the professionally offended, it's fine to laugh at your own religion, or the religion of your own religion.
TBH, I don't think Jesus, who don't forget is said to have turned water into wine when the drink ran out at a wedding, is going to be worried by a joke sausage roll.

Goldfishshoals · 16/11/2017 12:39

It's funny but can you imagine it was Islam being mocked?

So you're offended that Christians are generally more easy going, and have a better sense of humour about their religion than some groups of Muslims? Surely that's a good thing?

Would you prefer to live in a world with groups of fanatical Christians issuing death threats over a joke? Because I wouldn't.

This isn't a race to the bottom. The fact that some Islamic extremists can't take a joke is no reason to insist all Christians lost their sense of humour.

JonSnowsWife · 16/11/2017 12:41

Quite bemusing to see all the posters decrying "what if it was Islam being mocked?!".

We all know what happens when it is.

Sadly so do the likes of Charlie Hebdo!

TeaAndGingerBiscuits · 16/11/2017 12:41

I came here to post my best ever nativity scene, but it seems a bit tasteless with the way thread is going...
LIGHTHEARTED santa hats on plz!

Best ever nativity scene I've seen was not the standard scene, it was just before with Mary riding on the donkey, led by Joseph, a few wise men and things dotted around. It had been carefully made by dressing up little dolls, all looked very lovely and tasteful at first glance.

But when you looked a bit closer, you could see that Mary appeared to be holding a small bag. Looking closer still, it became apparent that some of the figures were Action Men. And yes, Mary was in fact sat on the donkey, pointing a gun covered by a sack in Joseph's direction.
Shock Grin

I laughed like a drain for hours after seeing that, still gives me a yearly chuckle!
