Muslim Christmas Advert

Apparently people are outraged by the Tesco Christmas advert featuring Muslim women exchanging gifts and it’s causing daily mail readers to implode.

It literally is 2 seconds of the advert and is women in hijabs handing over a Tesco’s bag - Tesco’s tag line is #everyonewelcome

I’m not a person of faith and I celebrate Christmas why is it seemingly unacceptable for others to celebrate it? AIBU to be annoyed at the outrage and think most of the people who are livid about it are probably hypocrites who won’t go to church on Christmas anyway?

@stopfuckingshoutingatme I started the thread as I was watching The Wright Stuff and that’s how thy presented it - A Muslim Christmas advert but it isn’t is it? It shows a 2 second clip of women in hijabs.

I do care about that racist bigots spouting hatred funnily enough - I wanted to see what others thought- no hidden agenda from me at all.

I don't think it's atheists who are complaining about some Muslims being in this advert.

I suspect it's the kind of people who have issues about Muslims. Somehow I don't think those kind of people are Christians or even have any view on atheism - but they do have views on Muslims and Islam.

I wonder how much of their view has been skewed by papers like the Mail, the Sun and the Express?

Christmas isn’t owned by one group.

And if it was, it would be pagan

GherkinSnatch · 13/11/2017 22:54

Presumably under a different name? Pagans have never celebrated Christmas even if Christians co-opted A LOT of pagan elements.

Can I complain about all Christmas adverts? It is 13th November. There is over a month to go.

Christmas trees started appearing in shops before Bonfire Night.

As a Muslim, I found the idea that Muslims give gifts to other Muslims...because it’s Christmas, a bit confusing. Although it was just a Tesco carrier bag, so maybe a sign of just being polite, as I know most Muslims don’t like to visit empty handed.
I recall Eid and Christmas falling very close together one year, my mum had invited a lady she had become friends with who worked at the local park. Mum’s friend and family members had driven past the house a few times, thinking they had the wrong address as there was a massive lit up Christmas tree in my parent’s window. Further surprised that we had cooked dishes like lasagne and by my dad having the broadest Lancashire accent...as he spoke of his love for mince pies.
My in laws are not Muslim and like Fuzzywuzzy I enjoy celebrating with them...they even drove 2 hours to get a Halal Turkey!
Each Christmas Eve ‘Uncle Brian’ , my dad’s , Catholic best friend brings gifts for the children...that signals the start of celebrations. Our non Muslim NDNs have been so excited to give my children their advent calendars they bought...just as excited as my husband and I have been getting bits for their presents.
These are the stories and people who manage to respect each other’s religions and create traditions, form friendships, are there for each other...maybe Tesco should film a Christmas at our house next year if they want to show everyday folk celebrating together...oh but as they don’t have Halal turkey, maybe the in laws can kindly do the 2 hour drive again Smile

I didn't watch the segment but i saw it was coming up on the wright stuff i turned it because Mathew Wright seems to enjoy stirring the pot and causing a fuss and there is none he just annoys me.

Gherkin it's Yule, and the date that we use for Christmas is the Roman festival of Saturnalia. 😆

GherkinSnatch · 14/11/2017 10:10

I know that Evil Smile I was just making the point about the difference between Christmas as Christians intended the day to be celebrated vs the original pagan midwinter festivities.

Don't get me started! 😂 I don't even enter into the discussion anymore. You can't argue with stupid. Or ignorant. Hmm
