Muslim Christmas Advert

IHATEPeppaPig · 13/11/2017 09:56

Apparently people are outraged by the Tesco Christmas advert featuring Muslim women exchanging gifts and it’s causing daily mail readers to implode.

It literally is 2 seconds of the advert and is women in hijabs handing over a Tesco’s bag - Tesco’s tag line is #everyonewelcome

I’m not a person of faith and I celebrate Christmas why is it seemingly unacceptable for others to celebrate it? AIBU to be annoyed at the outrage and think most of the people who are livid about it are probably hypocrites who won’t go to church on Christmas anyway?

Were there any.....atheists taking part Grin

StarsAndMoonsBlanket · 13/11/2017 11:11

My mums work colleague is muslim and on Christmas Day they will have a big family meal with all her children and grandchildren. They don't exchange gifts or cards but she doesn't get offended or upset when my mum and her Christian colleagues give her cards and gifts because at her similar celebration she does the same in reverse.

Cannot understand why the advert has upset people, it's just a family having a meal.

SoulStew · 13/11/2017 11:13

I am a bit shocked that people in one hand go on about ‘intergration’ but then huff when someone joins in with a celebration!?

Anyway, once we just combine all the festivities of all faiths into our mutual calendar, the better. I’m going to do Diwali next year!

sagamartha · 13/11/2017 11:13

I would love to see someone explain why they have an issue with Nadya doing a Christmas book but not with Nigella doing a Christmas book.

Knusper · 13/11/2017 11:14

Oh FFS. I'm Christian but most of my family isn't. By this logic me and the Christian family members should go off and have a private Christmas all by ourselves. 'Don't touch the turkey! You're not CHRISTIAN!!!'

There's enough violence and strife in the world. We should grab every opportunity for love and togetherness. I find it very difficult to believe that any practising Christians complained or cared about the ad.

sagamartha · 13/11/2017 11:14

What could we call this Winter Festival?

OnionShite · 13/11/2017 11:15

I think some people don't realise famous secularised Jews like Nigella are actually Jewish, and of those who do, they're probably quite used to the idea that they do celebrate Christmas.

WRT whether the family are Muslim, they appear to be Asian, and I must say I haven't seen any Asian Christian women wear that type of scarf. It's probably happened, but not common. I expect that's the reason they were shown in an identifiably Muslim scarf rather than something more cross-religious. It fits in with the message of the advert and, as I said upthread, makes sense to target the Muslim market.

endofthelinefinally · 13/11/2017 11:16

Some people are not very bright/have too much time/don't have anything else in their lives to worry about.
There are so many far worse things going on in the world.
I can't stand Tesco but that is a whole other issue.

Knusper · 13/11/2017 11:16

Well exactly, re. Nigella and Nadja. Atheist Christmas author okay but muslim author not?

TabbyMack · 13/11/2017 11:17

You just made the last bit up. Reading through the comments, the vast majority think the complaints (on Twitter) are ridiculous. And the tone of the article itself is that it’s ridiculous.

Yes, I know...it’s fashionable to pretend that all DM readers are uneducated scum on MN, but like most of the group think twaddle on here, it’s not really true.

RB68 · 13/11/2017 11:17

Mary and Joseph were Jewish anyway just to completely confuse matters so was Jesus for a long time

endofthelinefinally · 13/11/2017 11:21

Jesus was Jewish for his whole earthly life.

Knusper · 13/11/2017 11:21

Tabby that will teach me to read the article first (which I admit I haven't done).

whiskyowl · 13/11/2017 11:22

Have you read the below-the-line comments?

Because Nigella is british her father was the chancellor of the exchecker and apart from being a royal or the prime minster you just can't get more British than than. People believe Lawson is a nice British name. She must be a good white Christian. Therefore able to celebrate Christmas. I don't know her family history in terms of nationality but she's Jewish decent. But people don't see that cos it's not obvious by her dress or colour of skin. Which is why I used her and Sophie Dahl. Sophie may well be Christian but her family isn't British. Not on her grandfathers side any way. But white immigrants are fine.

Even though Naydia was born in well Luton, is raising her family in Leeds. And has the audacity to be a practicing Muslim. She should apparently go back to where she came from - well Luton then I guess.

Kathysclown · 13/11/2017 11:23

Having lived in a muslim country, I celebrated all of the important Islamic festivals with my 'local' friends and colleagues, as they were as much cultural as religious, and they were exciting to be part of. Equally, Christmas was quite a big deal there too, partly because Jesus is a prophet, but more to do with the increasing Westernisation of their culture.

In the county where I lived, towns and buildings were named after Jesus (Issa/Essa), as he is an important part of the Islamic faith.

Council · 13/11/2017 11:27

I once had a job where my clients were predominantly Muslim men. Not only did they treat me with utter respect, they were very generous at Christmas, usually gifting alcohol. My experience of the Muslim community it that people are happy to join British customs (many of them, of course, being British).

it infuriates me when people moan about "them" banning the nativity etc because that's not my experience at all,. I'm sure it's all fabricated.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/11/2017 11:28

It's funny isn't it?

I just imagine the ad agency and Tesco sitting there brainstorming and realising there's shitloads of people out there who don't naturally celebrate Christmas and trying to seize the opportunity and shift more turkeys and tinsel.

Create a market, sell more mince pies.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 13/11/2017 11:30

Can I just say the views in my last post were coming from the point of view of DM commenters views I disagree with coming from an imigrant family myself.

BarbarianMum · 13/11/2017 11:33

Because Nigella is white.

sagamartha · 13/11/2017 11:33

I bet you've managed to say exactly what those DM commentators are thinking....

They think Nigella is ok because she's 'one of us' but Nadya isn't.

Despite both being British and born and raised in the UK

StatelessPrincess · 13/11/2017 11:38

I'm Muslim and I don't celebrate Christmas , neither (I think) does anyone I know , but I'm happy about the advert because I'm so sick of people saying that we are trying to ban Christmas!

1DAD2KIDS · 13/11/2017 11:43

If we go off the rate of practicing Christians in the UK then I guess most of us are going to miss/shouldn't be doing Christmas this year by that logic. Lets not even going into murky depths of some of our Christmas traditions and dubious pagan origins.

But I'm not going to get a bee in my bonnet over it. There will always be morons. Most of the population don't give a shit about the content of the advent.

OhNoFuckADuck · 13/11/2017 11:44

I think it's very clever as it has got everyone talking about the Tesco advert - fab job from whoever thought of including this !

Hoppinggreen · 13/11/2017 11:44

I anti religion in general but I do love Mince Pies
Am I banned from Christmas?
Good job Brexit is coming, that'll stop all these Muslims coming over here stealing our celebrations!!
