Muslim Christmas Advert

IHATEPeppaPig · 13/11/2017 09:56

Apparently people are outraged by the Tesco Christmas advert featuring Muslim women exchanging gifts and it’s causing daily mail readers to implode.

It literally is 2 seconds of the advert and is women in hijabs handing over a Tesco’s bag - Tesco’s tag line is #everyonewelcome

I’m not a person of faith and I celebrate Christmas why is it seemingly unacceptable for others to celebrate it? AIBU to be annoyed at the outrage and think most of the people who are livid about it are probably hypocrites who won’t go to church on Christmas anyway?

I don’t understand the outrage either. Like you say it’s literally 2 seconds (and even if it was longer, so what?) I didn’t even notice when I first saw the advert. I feel like a very small number of people complained and the media, as usual have blown it out of proportion.

SatansLittleHelper2 · 13/11/2017 13:21

My dds best friend is.from a very strict, Muslim family (( they won't even go into Pizza hut as it sells alcohol )) and yet whilst they don't celebrate Christmas will allow their children to take part in the fun, school activities and exchange gifts with friends. They often do their own nice thing on the day too.

A lot of her other friends who are Muslim also do the traditional Christmas thing, because it's such a big thing here and great fun which is easy to do without the religious aspect.

I.don't see the issue with the Tesco advert at all, I have a much bigger problem with people being so bloody narrow minded.

TheVanguardSix · 13/11/2017 13:22

It's causing Daily Mail readers to implode.

Laughable! What doesn't make those jackasses implode?

LittleLionMansMummy · 13/11/2017 13:28

It's like every remembrance Sunday is apparently beset by 'Muslims' (or homosexuals/ women/ Remainers/ insert appropriate adjective) being offended by the sale of poppies. Cue much frothing at the mouth of course. I now make it my duty to reply to each and every Facebook update with a clear rebuttal. God only knows what people did before TV and Social media. Went about living their lives in relative harmony I suppose.

rightknockered · 13/11/2017 13:31

My children are muslim,(muslim dad) I am atheist. We do Christmas because we love it. Also do Diwali, Hannukah, Easter, Eid, and Pancake day.

Northernparent68 · 13/11/2017 13:32

What’s upsetting people is not a Muslim family in a Christmas advert, but the lack of any reference to Christianity in adverts, Christmas cards etc.

Anatidae · 13/11/2017 13:38

Not upsetting me. A bit less religion and a bit more fun, secularity and inclusiveness seems like a good idea.

And cake. Always cake.

Anatidae · 13/11/2017 13:41

schadenfreude

clare in the community personified

That is exactly what I’d think someone who would object would be like 😂 I’m pinching that one...

Not offending me in the slightest - we atheists are generally against being offended by people expressing opinions that differ from ours ;)

Peace, love and tinsel for all.

Northernparent68 · 13/11/2017 14:11

In my experience anatidae atheists are regularly upset and too ready to silence Christians, although they rarely challenge other religions

Anatidae · 13/11/2017 14:32

Really? All the ones I know think that all religion is a bit daft and baffling but accept that people do believe all sorts of stuff and that as long as it’s not impacting on basic rights people can believe what they want.

The general ‘I will kill you if you diss my religion’ level does vary among hardcore adherents of different religions mind. But I think most religious people just bimble on and exist with the rest of us, no? Plenty of ‘culturally Muslim but not terrible religious” types just as much as “well I was baptised but I only go to church for weddings and funerals’ types.

I’m not sure Christians are a persecuted minority in the UK just yet ;)

Secularity and sensibility for all - religions to be allowed to believe what they like as long as it doesn’t harm people or contravene the rule of law or affect public spaces.

MrsJayy · 13/11/2017 14:36

I don't think it is Tescos responsibility to uphold christianity it is a supermarket selling food they are advertising spending money in their shop for food and gifts so everybody can spend time with loved ones.

EvilDoctorBallerinaRoastDuck · 13/11/2017 14:47

Ah yes JonSnowsWife, my DD's class did the Hindu festival of colours, they wore old tshirts over their uniforms and threw paint over each other! Apparently they did it on the stairs outside their classroom too! 4 DC were tasked with mopping up the mess afterwards! 😂

Sashkin · 13/11/2017 14:58

Muslims coming over here stealing our celebrations

Fine by me, I’ll eat the Cadbury’s Heroes Wink

MiaEris · 13/11/2017 15:03

The only thing that infuriates daily mail readers more than Muslims not embracing British culture and custom's is Muslims embracing British culture and custom's Grin

hotbutteredcrumpetsandtea · 13/11/2017 15:05

Is anyone actually at all outraged? OR did the DM just write an article saying that people were?

Big difference. I doubt anyone gives a fuck that Muslims shop at Tesco in November and December, which is all the ad is actually showing anyway.

hackmum · 13/11/2017 15:05

Muslims not celebrating Christmas = bad.

Muslims celebrating Christmas = bad.

I think that's the gist of the Daily Mail world view.

See also Nadiya winning Bake Off - Muslims not taking part in British traditions like baking = bad. Muslims taking part in British traditions and excelling at them also = bad.

hotbutteredcrumpetsandtea · 13/11/2017 15:06

More made up faux outrage. Nobody is silencing christians, you're a massive majority Hmm

AlexaAmbidextra · 13/11/2017 15:06

How can anyone object to this? I loved the Amazon Christmas ad last year with the imam and the vicar. I thought it was lovely. Particularly as it was filmed at my childhood church where I was both baptised and married.

PavlovianLunge · 13/11/2017 15:13

I’m in Dubai at the moment, and the shops are FULL of Christmas displays, Christmas gifts ideas, decorations (also to buy) and more. I doubt the majority in Dubai will celebrate Christmas as such, but it seems clear that they’re very laid back about it, and certainly not offended. Unlike the PO Hate Mail readership, who really should take a long, cool look at themselves.

MyBeloved · 13/11/2017 15:22

Doesn't offend me! I think it's great that the advert portrays the diversity of our populatiin.

I'm Jewish and we have a 'Chanukah Bush' (Christmas tree), exchange gifts, watch the Queen's Speech and tuck into Christmas dinner. It's a great excuse to get together and have fun.

When in Rome!

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 13/11/2017 15:25

I dont know one single atheist who wants to stop Christmas

Happy to believe they exist...like santa

But ive never met one

The daily mail was fine in its article, most of the comments ive read were very unhappy

On The Wright show today they had a poll (probably of only a few people Grin) and 56% of people polled said they were going to boycott tesco

Shiela2017 · 13/11/2017 15:25

Totally silly! Of course anyone can celebrate what ever they like. Just a thought though, how do we all know it is dailymail readers that have complained???

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 13/11/2017 15:27

I dont think anyone has said that it is only daily mail readers who have complained

Just that the daily mail comments page Has lots of people complaining

Paddington68 · 13/11/2017 15:31

With all the racists boycotting Tesco, it is going to be a dream to shop there.

Shiela2017 · 13/11/2017 15:42

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 I just thought as well as some dailymail racists complaining, there could be well meaning people complaining that some muslims might be offended. Also some muslims might well be offended by it. My mates a muslim who won't celebrate xmas and she would never shop at tesco because of their connection with israel...
