Muslim Christmas Advert

IHATEPeppaPig · 13/11/2017 09:56

Apparently people are outraged by the Tesco Christmas advert featuring Muslim women exchanging gifts and it’s causing daily mail readers to implode.

It literally is 2 seconds of the advert and is women in hijabs handing over a Tesco’s bag - Tesco’s tag line is #everyonewelcome

I’m not a person of faith and I celebrate Christmas why is it seemingly unacceptable for others to celebrate it? AIBU to be annoyed at the outrage and think most of the people who are livid about it are probably hypocrites who won’t go to church on Christmas anyway?

Just read on twitter that the Tesco CEO has tweeted Tesco will NOT be selling halal turkey at all.

So it's a bit stinky of Tesco to state they have a turkey for everyone when plainly they don't yet use a muslim family image to promote the sale of their foodstuffs.

Very disappointing.

Willow2017 · 13/11/2017 17:51

Omg our Muslim neighbours decorate thier house, give out sweets and go guising at halloween. They might even pull this kind of stunt at xmas! How dare they have fun with out traditions too. Phone the DM right now its worse than they could imagine 😲😲😲

I kind of like the xmas adverts, all that pretend perfect xmas stuff. I know its only an advert, made to encourage you to spend in thier shop (doesnt work with me) and they are very carefully made to manipulate the public but hey ho i like them. And i agree they should try ads that are applicable to a multi cultural society's holidays not just Christian festivals.

Birdsgottafly · 13/11/2017 17:54

No idea why anyone thinks Muslims would be offended by this.

Because "I’m pretty sure Tescos is doing for the publicity - well as they say, any publicity is good publicity. "

There have been many articles written by Muslims, in the Papers, since this advert came out, objecting to them being used in a publicity stunt.

Tesco aren't selling Halal Turkeys and don't intend to.

This will only prove to certain sectors that "we are being taken over by Muslims" and increase hatred.

It's ok people laughing at the "Daily Mail fritters", but some of them carry out verbal/physical abuse and vandalism.

There should have been a level of responsibility shown, by Tesco, but that's asking too much.

Willow2017 · 13/11/2017 17:56

Well tescos need to get thier ad men and women ro check thier policies first! Bloidy cheek. "Turkeys for everyone except you, and you, oh and you two in our advert promising turkeys for everyone!!"

StrictlyPannnn · 13/11/2017 17:56

Well I am offended by the cynicism, as I say, of stating there is turkey for all.....yet not supplying this, as a policy.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 13/11/2017 17:56

Not at all offended by it, but it's all a bit try hard and and shoe horning in diversity in a really clumsy way.

It's like watching your Dad dancing. A clumsy and misjudged attempt to be cool.

StatelessPrincess · 13/11/2017 17:57

Pannnn Apparently they have actually said they aren't selling halal turkeys, there's an article on The Independent website about it. I think it's really odd. You could order one online? Try organic-halal-meat.com/

Beelzbubble · 13/11/2017 17:59

Perhaps it's because the advert features a little (prepubescent) girl in a hijab which some people would find offensive/sexualising a child?

StrictlyPannnn · 13/11/2017 18:02

As salaam alaikum Stateless!

yes I'd googled and saw the article in the independent. If Tesco had sold halal if would have made things so much easier!

I will check your link, thank you.

StatelessPrincess · 13/11/2017 18:03

Birdsgottafly I just meant about having Muslims in a Christmas advert, I was talking about us being included not being offensive, I didnt mean about being used for publicity or not even being able to buy halal turkey. I should have perhaps viewed it with a more cynical eye. I'm still not offended by it though, so many people genuinely seem to think we want to ban Christmas etc, I saw us being included as a positive thing.

StatelessPrincess · 13/11/2017 18:08

Wa alaykumu assalam Pannnn Grin I used to buy meat online and I think that's where I got it from although can't quite remember. If it is the same place then it was very good anyway!

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 13/11/2017 18:11

Apparently who ? Anyone who gives a flying fuck about a Tesco advert is a Dick to start with

And why start a thread to mention racist stupid behaviour OP ? I think there is something inherently dodge abiut these types of threads frankly - any thread with Muslim in the title gets a big fatHmm from me

StrictlyPannnn · 13/11/2017 18:12

Thank you very much! It's about 66 pounds for a mid range free range turkey. Plus delivery so I will talk to them in the morning!
We have found a butcher in Rusholme Manchester who says he will be having turkey, but he didn't seem convincing....like he just didn't want to say 'no'.

BanyanTree · 13/11/2017 18:14

I dont see the problem either. Perhaps if we all took the time to find out about other peoples festivals and were included in them we would all get along a lot better.

TweetTweetTweet · 13/11/2017 18:21

Stateless - Thank you. I thought so too.

Have a merry xmas and a delicious turkey too!

Birdsgottafly · 13/11/2017 18:23

"Perhaps if we all took the time to find out about other peoples festivals and were included in them we would all get along a lot better"

And that was part of the issue that the writers who are Muslim had. If Tesco was doing their bit for diversity/education/acceptance then they could have designed adverts for Ramadan, but they didn't. There are lots they could do, but they just wanted their Christmas ad talked about and to hell with the collateral damage.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 13/11/2017 18:43

'Collateral damage '

Where is this damage ? Does anyone other than the OP even care Confused

Willow2017 · 13/11/2017 19:00

Stop
Apparently lots of people do who care are screaming about Muslims taking over our country/religious festivals etc. Never mind thier ignorance empty vessels and all that.

Tescos didnt give that a thought any more than they thought it ridiculous to have Muslims promoting their xmas food when they dont have halal xmas food!

Most of us dont care about who celebrates xmas or how they do it but advertising something they claim is for everyone and using a particular group of people who cant actually get the stuff in the advert isnt right anytime. Its rubbish management and actually false advertising.

Anyone can celebrate xmas however they want to its nobody elses concern in my book i wish everyone felt the same but they don't.

Funny enough the people who are Muslims on this thread dont seem to agree with your opinion that nobody should mention muslims on any thread.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 13/11/2017 19:07

I am instinctively wary of threads with titles such as 'was this racist' ( 99% of the time is is !) and 'muslim' in the title as they inevitably open the floodgates for some unpleasant discourse . For race issues MN is poor in general .

It's a bit like the adage 'if a tree falls down in the forest' I think that giving airspace to the views of people who have an issue with said advert is risky . Ignore these small minded people and don't start a thread about their small Minded views

That's just my opinion ! My hands were too cold to type it earlier Wink

MinervaSaidThar · 13/11/2017 19:30

Sorry but I completely disagree with this. What you're advocating is tantamount to self-censorship in case it offends racists and bigots( I realise that you don't intend this at all).

I'm Muslim and I love to see Muslims in ads as it shows we're a part of British society.

And O think it's good to see portrayal of women in hijab on TV so that the Daily Mail frothers get used to it. Muslim women in hijab bear the brubt if racist attacks against Muslims because they're seen as 'other'. The wuicker we change that, the better. I applaud Tesco for this. Every little helps!

ILoveDolly · 13/11/2017 19:35

This advert like all adverts is an ode to capitalism and has nothing to do with any religion, so it's all rather a woo ha about nothing

isadoradancing123 · 13/11/2017 20:00

Who are those stupid people who are outraged. Anyway, Muslims may well celebrate food and present giving, doesn't mean they have to believe the relegious part, I am not Muslim but do not go th church on Christmas day

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 13/11/2017 20:14

Fully paid up member of CofE here and tbh didn’t even notice the Muslim family in the advert til it was pointed out, just looked like a load of people celebrating being with their family at Christmas. Muslims I know all have a family meal and secret Santa. To Christians this is a joyous time of year and no one should be excluded from the joy of sharing happiness. Personally I wish they had shown people celebrating in care homes and soup kitchens too (and maybe followed up with some good donations) but The Christmas message is for everyone, happiness and hope should be for everyone.

Cyclewidow46 · 13/11/2017 20:19

I work with quite a few Muslims and whilst they may not actually believe in the religious aspect of Christmas, it is an opportunity for them to get together with their families for a meal and catch up as it’s the one day of the year that most people will not be at work.
Some exchange presents and some don’t.

fuzzywuzzy · 13/11/2017 20:28

To be honest Christmas is the one time of year everyone in the family is off work. So yes we did tend to all either end up at my mothers or mine for a massive roast and I used to buy crackers and the kids would have a lovely time running riot all over the house and we got to catch up with eachother. The kids would all really look forward to coming to mine for a roast, I did turkey occasionally as well (the halal butcher would take orders for turkey's and lots of people would order them), altho I'm not a massive fan of turkey (possibly I don't cook it right) and my mother loves brussel sprouts.

My best friend (also Muslim), has the same experience of Christmas, they also do secret Santas and have a lot of fun.

I do now I suppose celebrate Christmas as my in-laws are Christian, and I would not dream of refusing or refraining from joining in the celebrations with them as it would really hurt their feelings and they are the kindest people I know and have swept me and my DC up into their family.

I've always maintained Christmas is my most favourite festival that I do not observe. How is it even possible not to be a part of it, every street is lit up, we get time off work and school, the TV is full of Christmas movies loads of our friends celebrate it.

Seriously sometimes I feel Muslims are set up to fail, we're damned for not integrating and then hated for integrating.

And if anyone so wishes to do you're all welcome to celebrate Eid with us, I've known some non-Muslim people who have tried to observe Ramadan and fasted with us too. I usually hold a massive barbecue at mine for Eid (when it falls on summer) and everyone who wants is invited, the more the merrier.
